- a 60 gal, a 100 gal, and two ponds later, you’re on your knees crying when you realize your goldfish are friends with each other, you’ve spent your life savings on seachem prime, there’s trout pellets, trout pellets everywhere 

-someone tells you they bought twenty feeder fish for a ten gallon. you hear yourself suddenly yelling about carp. you’ve written thirty pages on how to care for carp. you find yourself leaving your body as you watch it yell at this poor fool, carp need hundreds of gallons, one feeder goldfish will grow up to be cramped in 50 gallons, they live for 20 plus years, no nono, you HAVE to build a pond you CRIMINAL

Ever notice how they keep moving the goalposts when it comes to animal intelligence vs. human intelligence?

“Humans are completely unique. No other animal uses tools.”

“Actually, wild sea otters have been observed using rocks to open shellfish.”

“Okay, but that’s not true intelligence. They just pick the rocks up; they don’t alter them in any way.”

“Chimps peel the leaves from sticks to make more effective termite probes.”

“Well, that’s just technology. Only humans have art.”

“What about painting elephants? Art critics often can’t tell the difference between their work and a human’s.”

“Okay fine. But only humans have language. That’s the mark of true intelligence.”

“These African Grey Parrots use hundreds of words correctly and even ask original questions.”

“Oh yeah? Well, does any non-human species demonstrate self-awareness?”

“Dolphins pass the mirror test without training.”

“Pfft. How about problem-solving?”

“I can’t keep squirrels out of my bird feeder no matter what I do.”

“Aha! Bet you can’t think of a species that possesses all these traits! Only humans! We’re No. 1! We’re No. 1!”

“Crows.”

I refuse to blame the costume department for this, because Emma had went in there and ultimately, was given creative control. She has spoken about working with the head designer, Jacqueline Durran, on the gown. From they way she spoke about it, it seemed like Emma was given more creative control than what she lets on. It’s unfair that an actress with no costume designing background was given control of her gown. Complaints and adjustments are okay and are actually apart of the costuming process, not giving the lead role complete control over their outfit. 

Instead of a corset, Emma gave herself a bodice that has some sort of tinseled plastic mesh underneath it. 

Over a 300 million dollar budget and they used glitter glue (in a striped pattern) on a delicate fabric. 

It’s obvious that while the dress could be pretty for literally anything but a movie, it doesn’t work in a live action remake. It’s unfair to Durran that her job was taken over by someone who doesn’t know anything about costume design and they decided to blow their money redesigning the dress until it fit Emma, not Belle.

Artist Statement: This piece is about privilege, and how it enables those who have it to ignore the history has created that privilege. Specifically this piece is about white Americans today who claim that they are responsible for their own success, while in reality that success is built on the oppression of people of color. In order to illustrate this idea I drew a house on a hill that is literally covering and obscuring the history of America that came before it. The people in the house are able to say, “Yes, we built this house ourselves”, because they are unable or unwilling to look outside of the privilege they have constructed.

This topic is important to me because it is both timeless and particularly relevant today. I am a white man in America who benefits from that privilege, and I think it’s important that all people take time to learn how historical inequalities were not fixed, but built upon and institutionalized.
