a thing with ty lee is that she knows how to get her way but doesn’t trust people to give it to her if she asks directly. she is accustomed to violence when she denies people’s wishes. so to avoid this, she’s learned how to make up flattering lies and as long as she bullshits people with her usual charm, they seem to just want to believe her because she’s charismatic and cute. and so when a boy hits on her, she’ll say something like how she would LOVE to go out but she can’t this week because she’s leaving for poetry camp and she needs to get to the doctor so she can renew her prescription for “opposite-adderall.” and the guy will just believe her and beg her to call him in six weeks. yet with mai, ty lee has no desire to lie, and no power to grapple for through manipulation and deceit. so if mai asks her if she wants to go somewhere or do something and ty lee’s not feeling it, she’ll just smile and say no, totally neutrally, no bullshit, not even a “thanks” on the end. and then she’ll suggest whatever she wants, and there’s no drama. the freedom that comes with being authentic without fear is astonishing.
