Kinda weird seeing people defend tyzula but it only ones from an azula point of view never tylee’s like how would being with azula even benefit Ty Lee so i really rather they focus on Ty Lee as a kyoshi warrior not just an accessory or some caregiver for azula like 90% of people seem to think she is
From a Ty Lee perspective, she gets the benefits of being with the girl she likes (legit called azula the most perfect girl in the world canonically) and a member of royalty which gives her the opportunity to get away with more stuff. She grew up as a part of a matching set but with Azula she was able to stand out and shine without being confused for her sisters. Did she willingly go with Azula in Book 2? No and Azula was awful for forcing her to come along but Ty Lee clearly doesn't entirely hate Azula, even as kids she had fun with Azula. Ty Lee also has fun with Azula even in Book 2 when she's forced to come along, she clearly enjoyed combat and such and enjoyed taunting her enemies (literally said "we're prettier than you" to the kyoshi warriors 😭😭😭), something she has in common with Azula. So benefits for being with Azula:
1. Being with the girl she likes
2. Dating a member of royalty which elevates her status and allows her to get away with more
3. Being able to stand out more and not be part of a "matched set"
4. Being with someone with a similar sense of humor and idea of fun as her
Ofc, I understand why they didn't make TyZula canon, the show came out in 2008 and Ty Lee obviously would have to see a lot of change from Azula before wanting to pursue a relationship with her, in fact they'd have a lot to work out together before it'd be a healthy relationship. However the choice to put Ty Lee in the Kyoshi Warriors always confused me, because Ty Lee's number 1 thing was wanting to stand out and not be part of a matching set since she was treated interchangeably with her sisters growing up...Then she goes on to join a girl group that all dresses the same and fights the same, literally a matched set where only Suki was an important enough character to get a name until recently when they gave some of the warriors names. I didn't find it consistent with her backstory at all. It would've made more sense for her to go back to the circus or maybe became a bounty hunter like June, since that way she could atone for her crimes by finding and capturing war criminals but also have a chance to kick ass (which she loves doing) while still standing out on her own as an individual.
