That one Starfall where we accidentally showed up in matching colors.
Elain spent days trying to decide on a color for this year’s Starfall. Green was out of the question, since it was the color he preferred to wear. Her sisters were coming in matching colors with their mates. Elain, usually taking the safe route with a shade of pink, wanted to try something different this time. After contemplating between crimson and amethyst, she chose the latter. Purple was a darker shade of pink, after all. Kind of. Surely he wouldn’t show up in that color, and even if he did, it would probably be a much darker tone. Or simply green.
Yet there he stood, in the exact same shade of amethyst as her dress, looking as shocked as she felt.
“I can go home and change,” he offered politely.
“No need to do that,” Elain forced out, trying to calm the rapid pounding of her heart. Everyone was watching them. Amused. Worried. She hated the audience.
“I should — it’s making you uncomfortable.”
“Having you change would make me even more so. We’re already here, and everyone has seen us. I don’t mind. We’ll just…” Politely ignore each other.
He understood, inclining his head. She could see the hurt in his eyes. The longing.
Wanting to say at least one nice thing to him, she added — politely, of course — “The color suits you.”
He looked genuinely startled. A blush crept over his handsome face, deepening the hue of his mysterious scar. Elain’s fingers twitched.
“I am so glad to hear that,” he replied, the corner of his lips turning upward in the barest hint of a smile. “I was worried people would mistake me for Rhys.”
Elain couldn’t hide her amusement, or the slight bubble of laughter that wanted to escape her chest.
The curve of his lips turned into a real smile, his eyes shining at her reaction. They stared at each other, and for a moment, it didn’t feel uncomfortable. It didn't feel awkward.
Gesturing toward the table, Lucien asked, “Can I get you a drink, lady?”
