Fyodor Dostoevsky, A Writer’s Diary, Volume 1 (1873-1876)
Ninth Saint
Hey,
Question for the larger PHM fandom. In the book we see Stratt make some hard and morally gray choices that end up having legal consequences. Like, she says she will likely spend the rest of her life in jail.
... since its also implied that Grace was her second in command, helped her make decisions, and frequently signed off on stuff for her... do we think that if he hadn't gone to Space that he ALSO would have ended up with jail time???
Hmmm.... yeah, I think if governments came after her they'd come after all the senior people within Project Hail Mary.
I don't think any of that was really on Grace's radar, he was so focused on the science and the administration of the project. I think it would come as a bit of a surprise to him. Stratt probably feels like this all-powerful leader in a way that makes it hard to imagine her not in charge. I think she's clearly thought of it and does what she can to protect her staff, but when he world leaders want blood she can't stop them.
I think, too, he still imagines he can just go back to his old life once the Hail Mary launches. I don't think he'd be prepared for this at all.
I was thinking about this because, reading the book, it became clear to me that Grace was not only her back up plan for the mission, but her back up plan if anything happened to her. Like, he was on board for every major event and decision she made.
If she, say, got assassinated by some kind of extremist group, I fully believe she was training up Grace to step in. Even tho that would have been a complete shock to him, im positive that all the other scientists and politcal and government people would have been like: "ok grace now what?" And hed have been like... "who me???" .
So there is potentially a universe in which instead of sacrificing his life to space, she sacrifices his freedom to take her place in making the hard choices and facing the consequences
(only if she is literally dead. I firmly believe that if the governments came knocking trying to put grace on trial and she is alive she firmly tries to take all the blame... wether that works or not... is the premise of this post).
So in an AU where Stratt DID have the coma gene and sent herself and Grace stayed behind, do we think he’d be left holding the bag? Or, given that he said no to being sent on the PHM in canon, would it be paralleled by him refusing to step up in this AU and the world would be worse off?
This is the start
of how it all ever ends

Listen this post has an audience of like five people but oh my fuck the extent to which if Obernewtyn took off as a fandom there would be Ariel Shipping Discourse kind of makes me laugh.
(Listen ‘beautiful blonde guy who canonically tortures like almost all the other attractive men in the series + is definitely Obsessed with the heroine’ I just I KNOW IT).
“She’s not who they think she is. She’s not a leader. She just wants to save her skin. It’s as simple as that.”
This is your reminder today that Irene Adler in the original Conan Doyle story is literally not a criminal. She never commits a crime.
Nor is she a seductress in any kind of negative or manipulative sense - she has a mutual relationship with a powerful man who then breaks up with her, and afterwards she keeps protection against him in the form of evidence that the relationship existed. She HAS blackmail material, she even waves it at him threateningly because he treated her like shit, but she never even uses it.
Irene Adler is not a thief, femme fatale, or blackmailer. She's just a cool lady that wants to be left alone.
@delphi-star You do recall correctly!! She does not give a shit about that man! She's happily married! She tipped him for being a witness at her wedding!
If your Sherlock Holmes adaptation has a character whose identifying qualities are that she is a seductive criminal in love with Holmes, you have created a character that is basically the literal opposite of Irene Adler and you should name her something else.
She's also -- and I cannot stress this enough -- from New Jersey. IMO this is the single most important detail missing from all the adaptations -- IRENE ADLER IS FROM NEW JERSEY.
Please just once in my life I would like to see this adapted faithfully it would be the funniest fucking thing ever.
My ideal adaptation would be one where the king builds her up with the usual adaptation nonsense. She's a thief, a femme fatale, she'll seduce anyone!!!!
Smashcut to a New Jersey opera singer happily engaged to the most boring person you've also met (also from New Jersey).

Another thing I love in books is far future stories that don't quite get the names and purposes of stuff in our time right. I smile every time someone in the Obernewtyn Chronicles talks about the mysterious Beforetime organisation Govamen, which controlled many societies and made them go to war with one another for profit.
Fun almost completely unrelated fact: The author of the Obernewtyn Chronicles was my aunt's high school friend, and an ex-girlfriend of my Dad, I've met Isobelle Carmody twice though I was quite young and only vaguely remember it. The character Rushton is named for my aunt's boyfriend.
I've only tried to read one of her books, "The Gathering", and I hated it
Power move to write your multiple-thousand-world post apocalyptic epic and give your protagonist's series-long love interest your friend's boyfriend's name.
