i will be honest i am so torn about the m/m shipping thing. i see m/m shipping as a refuge from the misogyny perpetuated on women both in real life and in fiction, so i write a LOT of fanfiction for m/m ships. i sometimes write f/f or f/m side ships, or even main ships (i've written a lot of female dragon age characters, for example). i just write for m/m a lot more. writing f/f or f/m means reckoning with whatever misogyny they experience in their canons, like imagine being a fan of the women in The Pitt and wanting to make fanworks set in the canonverse but not having to deal with its misogyny. R-I-fucking-P, my condolences. and canon or not, writing f/m is even worse than f/f because tropes that aren't inherently unequal in a same-gender ship suddenly look a little different with the lens of real world gender based discrimination and violence put over them. fandom is my escape and my refuge, so i just plain don't want to reckon with the forces making my real life worse daily in every fic if i can avoid it. it would suck all the joy out of it.
having explained my reasoning, i still feel like a hypocrite. i have a lot of opinions about female characters and ships and the way they are so poorly treated, and i want better for female characters and female ships - but i rarely am the one to put my money where my mouth is and make stuff for them.
i don't know how to reconcile this. i'm sending this ask because i bet i'm not the only person struggling with this issue, and i wanted to support anyone else who feels the same way. loving female characters can be tough no matter how genuine.
look. no one is telling you not to write m/m fics if that's what you enjoy. this is fandom, it's for fun, and this blog is not about making people feel bad for things they like. with that said, i personally really don't agree with the argument that m/m is the only possible refuge from having to deal with misogyny.
writing about women doesn't have to be about misogyny if you don't want it to be. i mean you could make a similar argument that because m/m is about queer men, you necessarily have to deal with homophobia if you write yaoi. but a lot of people don't do that because it's fanfiction. you can write about whatever scenario you want and deal with whatever issues you're comfortable dealing with. you gave the pitt, as an example, right? write about mel and santos having crazy omegaverse sex after singing karaoke together; write an au where aliens exist and mohan and mckay go on a date in a spaceship (look we all have our crack ships, this one's mine, leave me be); write about dana missing collins so much that she moves to portland to be with her. get creative, go crazy. i just really dislike the idea that it's impossible to write women in a fun escapist way.
another issue i have with this idea is that often the male characters being shipped in popular m/m ships are themselves misogynistic. so, for example, the two most popular ships for the pitt, at least according to ao3 numbers, are robby/whitaker and robby/abbot. now robby is a character that i personally really like and enjoy, but i don't think there's any denying that he's sometimes casually misogynistic (and a little racist) in a condescending old liberal white guy way. so when you say writing m/m frees you from writing about misogyny, what do you do about robby or dean winchester or any other beloved male character who is pretty obviously misogynistic. do you only have to deal with misogyny if a character experiences it, but not if a character perpetuates it? i don't really get that logic.
also, i understand if you turn to fanfiction for escapism from real world issues, but speaking for myself, i sometimes like seeing characters deal with misogyny in fic. i think it can be pretty cathartic to see people actively confront the systemic ways they're mistreated. i totally understand that not everyone enjoys that sort of thing, but i must assume that at least some m/m shippers do actually enjoy it, because i know a lot of m/m fic does actually address how homophobia affects its characters. so if we can do that for homophobia, why can't we also do it for misogyny and racism and ableism and other kinds of bigotry?
again, i'm really not trying to call you out or anything, anon. like i said, if m/m is what you enjoy writing for, then the last thing i want is to make you feel bad about that. but i do think that there are plenty of ways to engage with f/f and f/m without having to deal with misogyny if you don't want to, in the same way that people write about m/m without really engaging with homophobia (or misogyny for that matter). and i kind of resent the idea that the presence of women in a story necessarily sucks the fun out of it.
I'm very interested in the narrative and general concepts in Andromeda but holy fuck it's like everything that makes DAI so fucking unbearable to play while also cruelly teasing everything that makes DAV so fucking fun to play WHILE ALSO making me do a damn sudoku while I'm on the verge of exploding from rage (see points 1 and 2) so it's a uniquely frustrating gameplay experience to say the least
obviously thereβs nothing morally wrong with the projectionist lens through which a large portion of fandom operates but it does get kind of tiring to constantly feel like. hey guys what if we stopped talking about ourselves and instead talked about the character
and of course a degree of projectionism can be a very useful lens in certain circumstances, such as having unique insight into a character who shares certain aspects of your own experiences. but at the end of the day you still gotta recognize that there are going to be aspects of them that diverge from yourself
tagged by @sisterdomina for a NSFW character tag game - she suggested ME Ladies since I don't have OCs, but I also dipped back into DA and BG3 Ladies since I haven't had a lot of creative output recently
Whatβs an idea, dynamic, or trope in your current work that feels naughty or self-indulgent?
everything I make is wildly self-indulgent on account of my niche interests, chiefly finding gaps in canon to fill with WLW rarepairs/crackships/rare characters being weird about each other. Samantha/Ashley/Gianna (trayliamsini) started just because they're the characters I find the sexiest, so I went sniffing out canon-plausible reasons to insert a season of The L Word into the ME trilogy. Then accidentally started unraveling a story about queer loneliness (in space) and how you can make it so much worse by exploring emotional infidelity, especially if there is also an apocalypse going on, but then you can also make it a lot better by exploring polyamory instead. this is the flavor or "naughtiness" I find most appealing, since I love sexually charged interpersonal drama more than anything else π
Is your OC womanfave a virgin, blushing maiden, or sexual fiend? or aro/ace? or something in between?
as part of my vendetta against fanonization that tends to shoehorn characters into either extreme in slapstick ways I find annoying, I place pretty much all characters I like into the zone of "average to slightly below average when you factor in how hot they are but maybe they were just too busy being employed or whatever". I had originally pegged Gianna as Port Hanshan's resident Shane but I'm workshopping what exactly her problem is, so maybe not. She still gets around more than the other two
Whatβs your OC womanfave's βI shouldnβt be turned on by thisβ trigger?
this is basically the Main Idea actually. temptation and guilt and unresolved feelings spilling over at inopportune times are the sauce π€π€π€
Whatβs your OC womanfave's hard NO?
specifically related to the part of this concept that has Ashley and Gianna in a monogamous relationship, but Ashley and Samantha are squished on the Normandy together, while Gianna and Samantha have been in constant contact since Ashley was injured, so all three of them are fighting maximum demons: crossing the line to sexual cheating. A key ingredient to the sauce (above) is that Ashley is in the position of the greatest temptation but is the one the least likely to crack, while Gianna and Samantha are fortunate to be physically apart because they are absolutely the weakest side in this pre-throuple love triangle
What is the most debauched VP/Art you have ever created?
(I'm uncool and don't know what VP means) Not for this ship because I haven't had the time/brain cells to get much creating done yet, so dipping back into older works: if we're going by The Implications then it would probably be my latest Mizora/Florrick art, most sensual is probably this Neve/Rana which is still a favorite of mine. Back in my Arcane days, I took a crack at full NSFW art and honestly just found it so boring, so this is the level I like to be at.
What is the wildest NSFW smut you have ever thought up? Did you write it?
Thought up is between me and god but posted about? I posted some Kinktober concepts for Dragon Age the past couple years. Prob the wildest one I haven't written but definitely would, if the inspiration comes, is the one about Celene and Briala reenacting that scene from Portrait of a Lady on Fire where they rub hallucinogenics into each other's armpits. The wildest one I actually wrote and posted, although I was lazy and only wrote the trope and skipped actually writing the smut because was bored with it, would probably be the Neve/Rana sex pollen one. I forget how weird people find that trope tbh, it's so fantastical it doesn't register that high on my freak meter
Do you have any crazy projects for the future?
It's been a dry year for me creatively; anything I actually get drawn or written is a win in my book. I hope I manage to finish the trayliamsini manifesto, but if I don't, I'll have enjoyed working on it.

always thinking about how Mass Effect is virtually alone in getting it right by not capitalising species names. asari and krogan not Asari and Krogan. we don't say Koalas and Mantis Shrimp and Common Octopus why would we say Klingon and Goa'uld and Mandalorian? is it because there is a tendency among scifi writers and readers to conceptualise sapient extraterrestrials more as other cultures than other species? so when we write them out we treat them like Romans and Germans and Aztecs rather than monkeys and badgers and ferrets? what do we learn about humanity (Humanity?) from that? anyway thank you Mass Effect for giving me another minor thing to obsess over
It's also one of the only sci-fi properties I know of that doesn't just name species after their home planets. Asari come from Thessia, but they are not called thessians or something.

blogging is too dignified a term for what iβm doing on here
too many people seem to think certain ships would officially start going out and put a label on their relationship and sometimes even go so far as to get married. but most of the time said ships would really just be freaks and fuck weirdstyle without addressing the elephant in the room that is the mutual romantic attraction

I always switch between Ash and Kaidan but my last playthrough with Kaidan lasted months, so it feels like the last time I did ME3 with Ash was a long time ago.
BUT it only gives me more Ash/Liara feelings at the beginning and that's what this post is about (and if anything between them happens with Kaidan as well, I'm in denial and that's all ββΏββΏ)
Love the reunion where Ash says it was difficult to leave Earth and Liara replies "Ashley. I'm sorry." I especially like that she calls her Ashley immediately and that Liara was talking to Shepard initially, but it's Ash who answered.
"The lieutenant-commander has become very capable."
Always found this scene very strange regardless of who she's talking about here. But when it comes to Ash, I feel like it's more personal and less about Shepard's own feelings. Liara is noticing. Shipping goggles on? Yeah but it's okay haha
After James crashes into the Cerberus's shuttle, Liara's look is so striking as Ash is moving toward her.
And this sequence of events is interesting:
As soon as Ash hears the noise, she holds Liara by the waist even more firmly:
Truly blink and you'll miss it! But the second Ash realizes the danger, she takes her gun and pushes Liara away:
It's not a gentle push because Liara ends up far away on the ground as we can see here:
And Ash gets to face Eva CorΓ© alone, which is the point. To protect Liara:
When Liara gets back up, it's after the fight:
Exactly what Ash wanted again!
And the fact that Ash is the one who ends up injured? Ah.
The good angst.
