Me when I catch myself thinking "I wonder what it's like to be chosen by somebody" but then I remember my best friend chooses to be my best friend and my mutuals choose to follow me and the minimum wage employee chooses to give me sincere kindness that I remember years later because I was going through a hard time and it meant a lot

And a BREAKING UPDATE: The trial of Yorgen Fenech, the man accused of masterminding the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia (put respect on her name) began on July 1, 2026 and is ongoing - you can go watch coverage of it.
The Degiorgio brothers pleaded guilty to carrying out the bombing and are serving 40-year prison sentences. The two suppliers of the bomb also received life sentences.
Others involved (middlemen, etc) have received a variety of reduced aentences and pardons based on their participation and testimony to take down Yorgen Fenech.
The former prime minister of Malta, Vincent Muscat, resigned and trials are ongoing.
Not to minimize how bad the world currently is, because shits not great, but don't ignore the wins when they actually exist. There ARE steps towards justice, there is still good in the world and people working to correct course. Don't let the gloom of it all jade you from seeing the action and effort that IS happening.
random question:
what was your first exposure to prev and what made you decide to follow them?
not every piece of art centered on a straight woman is "hetslop" and at some point it becomes misogyny to dismiss art abt women with that term

i think there's something to be said about the decrease in comments being left on fics in tandem with the "contentization". i remember when fics used to be seen as something you wrote and posted because you wanted to explore the characters/world/universe, and wanted to share it with others who might find it as interesting as you do. posting fics meant comments, which meant connection with your audience, with the people in the community. yes, even back then, you'd get the "more pls" comments, but that was still a sign of community, even if it did feel demand-y. "i like what you wrote so much that i'd like more, i want more of you in my community" is, essentially, how that felt. hate comments hurt because not only did someone hate something you wrote, but it also felt like "you do not belong in my community, i dont want you here." comments allowed conversation, connection, to others within a fandom/community, and they still do, but they have been left less and less over the years, because it's slowly become something you consume, not something you interact with. i used one the analogy that people are now treating ao3 and fics like goodreads--read it, bookmarked it, liked it, moved on. looking at the stats for my fics, occasionally, makes me mournful. a fic will have 100 bookmarks, most private, and have maybe... 10 comments. and then you're just left wondering: did they like the fic? did they think it was okay? is this something they really enjoyed, or did they find it mediocre? do they reread this, or was this a fun one and done? and you'll never know, because to them, its just like another book on the shelf at the bookstore. there's no engagement with the creator, no thanks for taking the time to write something at all (for free!) because its expected at this point. you will write and you will post and you will get kudos and private bookmarks and you will like it.
I agree with all of this, except to say that you can say nice things to authors of tradpub books as well (bad things should be restricted to Goodreads). I loved Jodi McAlister's reality TV romances so much that I tracked down her email address (which I swear was publicly available on her website, I didn't make it weird or anything) to make sure she knew how much I loved them and how excited I was to see Lily Fireball's side of things.
I always say that the thing which sets Sargent apart as a portrait artist is that he draws/paints literally every subject - no matter their gender, social position, life vs representational drawing etc - like he is right that minute realising he's desperately in love with them. And it rules every single time.
Examples pulled just from his Wikipedia page most popular works. Absolutely devastating scenes for bisexuals for over a century
Don't forget the ALLIGATORS. He loves them too.
Took me years to understand that boredom is not the enemy of writing. It is the raw material. Every good idea i have ever had arrived during a walk with no podcast, a train with no phone, a shower where i just stood there. The moment i fill every silence with content i stop generating anything of my own. I am just processing other people's thoughts instead of having mine. The empty space is where the work comes from. Protecting the empty space is the actual job.
that being said I'm not actually always opposed to conflict free fluff I am just opposed to the characters having their claws filed down for it. you can stick them in a coffee shop au it should just still feel like you sat the two worst most insane people on earth in a starbucks

imo if you want to have your noble character be cool with their servants or a 'good boss' my advice would just be that you can't. it's just inherently an uncomfortable situation & class dynamic & you have to reckon with that
It’s not necessarily uncomfortable. The boss knows their place, the servants know theirs and provided there’s no egregious violation of the relationship like beating them, a chill professional distance is fine.
The most uncomfortable employer/employee relationship is when middle class people get “servants” (ie a cleaner or gardener). That can be popcorn-worthy.
