This new edition of the iconic 18th-century work Exhibition of Female Flagellants reads like a secret dossier of illicit declarations, wild tales, recorded lectures and alleged rumors of how women and men derive uncontrollable excitement from the act of physical disciplining one’s bare buttocks or having one’s bare buttocks disciplined. Its descriptions are so jolting because such a book would be considered so taboo in today’s politically correct world that a modern equivalent would never see the light of day. It is as if the reader is given a voyeuristic view into the true history of personal corporal punishment as it actually happens behind closed doors. The book draws from a series of anonymously written eighteenth-century pornographic works on flagellation, as in the specific act in the English tradition of whipping disobedient posteriors with a birch rod. Also included in this edition is the final chapter of the series, Fashionable Lectures: Composed and Delivered with Birch Discipline, which was originally published around 1750.  The theme of both books is the pleasure that is derived from the whipping of males and females by dominant women in positions of authority. The series of books is unparalleled in its explicit descriptions of corporal punishment in 18th century England. Flagellation was so common in the country during this period, and for many decades after, that caning, along with spanking and whipping came to be known as “the English vice.” Yet, while it is a traditional peculiarity of Great Britain it is also the finest illustration of what many men and women secretly crave in many parts of the world and in countless households. The singular defect of earlier versions of these works is that they were a victim of their time in regards to proper editing, translation and organization. In short, they were a total mess. This wholly new version has not only cleared all those issues up but has created a body of writing that allows readers to profoundly enjoy the explicit accounts and the taboo tales as the original storytellers intended.
