Sooner or later leftists will have to deal with the issue that capitalism has made many people used to wanton excess and sooner or later we'll have to legit tell everyone we can't have plastic treats and luxury produce or cruises instantly available year round and it's gonna make so many people mad and call you a big meanie worse than stalin over it. It will not be popular at all but someone's gotta hold a firm no or the planet will never stop collapsing. We can't save the planet by living exactly how we do now just with a communist banner over it we have to take a loss sorry, shein product cycles shouldn't have been normalized to begin with.
The banana discourse really separated the wheat from the chaff of which "lefties" actually want a global workers revolution and which ones just want more stuff to be free
Saddest thing ever is reading an academic paper about a threatened or declining species where you can tell the author is really trying to come up with ways the animal could hypothetically be useful to humans in a desperate attempt to get someone to care. Nobody gives a shit about the animals that âdonât affectâ us and it seriously breaks my heart
âNo I canât come out tonight Iâm sobbing about this entomologistâs heartfelt plea for someone to care about an endangered mothâ
This is how I learn there's a moth whose tiny caterpillars live exclusively off the old shells of dead tortoises.
[Image description: text from a section titled On Being Endangered: An Afterthought that says:
Realizing that a species is imperiled has broad connotations, given that it tells us something about the plight of nature itself. It reminds us of the need to implement conservation measures and to protect the region of which the species is a part. But aside form the broader picture, species have intrinsic worth and are deserving of preservation. Surely an oddity such as C. vicinella cannot simply be allowed to vanish.
We should speak up on behalf of this little moth, not only because by so doing we would bolster conservation efforts now underway in Florida, [highlighting begins] but because we would be calling attention to the existence of a species that is so infinitely worth knowing. [end highlighting]
But is quaintness all that can be said on behalf of this moth? Does this insect not have hidden value beyond its overt appeal? Does not its silk and glue add, potentially, to its worth? Could these products not be unique in ways that could ultimately prove applicable?
End image description]
because we would be calling attention to the existence of a species that is so infinitely worth knowing
I was so inspired by this I made it into a piece of art for a final in one of my courses for storytelling in conservation
I used to work for two of the authors, Mark and Nancy Deyrup. They are true naturalists, interested in everything that lives, and wonderful human beings. They still live in central Florida where the tortoise shell moth lives, and have dedicated their whole lives to documenting the Florida scrub ecosystem and educating the public. I don't know if their names reach outside of entomology, but they are beloved figures here.
Thinking about a new bit where i start using âworkers of the worldâ as my go-to second person plural pronoun. Like âchatâ.
Workers of the world what do we think of this. Is it funny.
Workers of the world please like and reblog my post
stop spreading despair and nihilism
stop buying into the idea that nonviolent activism is useless, rather than (by far) the most effective form of protest
stop falsely claiming that BLM accomplished nothing and that most citizens âdonât careâ when people are murdered by the state
start understanding that most of your neighbors care about your rights, and their own
start noticing that most people are moved by injustice, including against people who look nothing like them
The pushback against ICE exposed a series of mistaken assumptions.

What happens when you do minimal screening before hiring agents, arming them, and sending them into the streets? We're all finding out.

The plan was never to become an ICE agent.
The plan, when I went to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Career Expo in Texas last August, was to learn what it was like to apply to be an ICE agent. Who wouldnât be curious? The event promised on-the-spot hiring for would-be deportation officers: Walk in unemployed, walk out with a sweet $50k signing bonus, a retirement account, and a license to brutalize the countryâs most vulnerable residents without consequenceâall while wrapped in the warm glow of patriotism.
At first glance, my rĂŠsumĂŠ has enough to tantalize a recruiter for Americaâs Gestapo-in-waiting: I enlisted in the Army straight out of high school and deployed to Afghanistan twice with the 82nd Airborne Division. After I got out, I spent a few years doing civilian analyst work. With a carefully arranged, skills-based rĂŠsumĂŠâone which omitted my current occupationâI figured I could maybe get through an initial interview.
The catch, however, is that thereâs only one âLaura Jedeedâ with an internet presence, and it takes about five seconds of Googling to figure out how I feel about ICE, the Trump administration, and the countryâs general right-wing project. My social media pops up immediately, usually with a preview of my latest posts condemning Trumpâs unconstitutional, authoritarian power grab. Scroll down and youâll find articles with titles like âWhat I Saw in LA Wasnât an Insurrection; It Was a Police Riotâ and âInside Mike Johnsonâs Ties to a Far-Right Movement to Gut the Constitution.â Keep going for long enough and you might even find my dossier on AntifaWatch, a right-wing website that lists alleged members of the supposed domestic terror organization. I am, to put it mildly, a less-than-ideal recruit.

The Trump administration is claiming the viral Story of my ICE Job offer is a lie. Good thing I kept the receipts.

When Everything Everywhere All at Once said âThe only thing I do know is that we have to be kind. Please, be kind, especially when we donât know whatâs going on"Â
When the Good Place said âWhy choose to be good every day when there is no guaranteed reward now or in the afterlife⌠I argue that we choose to be good because of our bonds with other people and our innate desire to treat them with dignity. Simply put, we are not in this alone.âÂ
When Jean-Paul Sartre said ââHell is other peopleâ is only one side of the coin. The other side, which no one seems to mention, is also âHeaven is each otherâ. Hell is separateness, uncommunicability, self-centeredness, lust for power, for riches, for fame. Heaven on the other hand is very simple, and very hard: caring about your fellow beings.â
Love that weâve elevated the conversation to such a degree that, if youâre going to be grimdark nihilistic in fiction, you need to argue philosophically against 4 seasons of The Good Place.
From the comments and other reblogs:
When Kurt Vonnegut said, âHello babies. Welcome to Earth. Itâs hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Itâs round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, youâve got a hundred years here. Thereâs only one rule that I know of, babiesâGod damn it, youâve got to be kind.â

Take five (look at what is left) 2025
as someone who remembers the patriot act and all the conversation surrounding it, it's a bit... of an experience being able to remember how many people pointed out that Terrorist was a politically convenient term which could be used to dehumanise and legally strip the rights from someone and that eventually all this would be used internally. and the response was 'nuh uh only browns with funny headgear are terrorists'. and then two decades of 'fighting age males' being blown to pieces at weddings because they might have, maybe, looked at a terrorist once. A week ago a head of state is black bagged in the middle of the night by the US for being a 'narcoterrorist'. And now an unarmed, random woman - white, citizen - is gunned down by jackboot thugs and before her body is cold she is, of course, a domestic terrorist.
If you are reading this, you need to know that the moment the US state needs to kidnap you, the moment a drone pilot decides you're in the wrong place, the moment you are bleeding to death on the sidewalk, you will be a Terrorist. Because anything can be done to a Terrorist.
