This has been my main argument against "AI" from the very beginning.
OpenAI scraped the entire web. All of which had been a labor of love from humans. Wikipedia is the backbone of a lot of LLMs, and that was volunteer human labor. They stole it and now they're selling it back to us.
And worse, they're trying to destroy the free sources that they stole from. It's destruction of human knowledge on an unprecedented scale. The burning of the library of Alexandria has nothing on this.

i must say, i am a huge fan of when a book is in the middle of a very exciting plot containing many interesting problems when out of nowhere for a few pages it's like, "hey by the way, real quick, here's a detailed explanation of the city's water filtration system! i'm telling you this for a reason and you should worry about it. anyway! haha okay back to the plot" and you just get to be Scared for a while
i am kissing you on the mouth right now
you are the only person who understands me. you and the person who tagged a series of unfortunate events

Unfriendly reminder that if you're displeased with a piece of fanfiction your courses of action are:
Read something else
Bitch PRIVATELY to friends
Write your own take on the premise (strongly recommend!)
All of the above
Under no circumstances should you try to "politely" critique the author who put the story up as a hobby. For free. Especially if the story in question is multiple years old. Ao3 is not Goodreads
"this is an inaccurate adaptation" okay but is it good "this didn't happen in the book" does it make sense in the context of the new work though "they totally changed the plot" and is the new one good or bad "it's completely different" not what I asked "they changed all the stuff I like" then I get why you wouldn't be into it but I'm asking about its own artistic merits "this character is meant to be blonde" I couldn't give less of a fuck
In most circumstances I agree with not giving less of a fuck if an adaptation is different, especially at a small changers like whether character is meant to be blonde, but sometimes it's a sign the director didn't understand the work they were adapting/is externalising their racism/think themes are for 8th grade English class (*side-eyes the people who made Game of Thrones*).
Examples:
Emerald Fennell taking the brunette Kathy (brunette specifically because dark hair = wilder and less civilised according to ye olde English racism, to symbolise her being a wild creature of the moors) and making her blonde and blue eyed while taking the blonde and blue-eyed family she married into (who were extremely white because blonde+blue-eyes+fair skin = more civilised in ye olde English racism, thus hammering in that these were city folk and Kathy was choosing between wild love and civilsed respectability). And that's without getting into the whitewashing of Heathcliff.
90% of film adaptations of The Picture of Dorian Gray making the man who is supposed to be a blue-eyed blond who looks like an angel (*gestures angrily at centuries of Christian murals and texts specifically depicting those more holy as blonder because the racism is long running and deep) brown eyed and dark haired. Like. This wasn't an author who just picked an appearance. This was deliberate reversal of the "blonde = good/safe/trustworthy, dark = bad/dangerous/probably a bit Scottish or Welsh in there" that was so common and remains so common in media and culture. Like. It's nowhere as bad as skin-tone based descrimination, but the fact that most bad boys have dark hair and most boys next door are blond says something. And it was part of the point of Dorian Gray that he looked - specifically looked! it's a book about people's looks!- like the most purest uwu lily white angel and was a monster underneath. And when directors cast dark-haired, dark-eyed, tanned men as Dorian? Not only does it show the director didn't get the book's themes, but it also reinforces rather than rejects the racism of European imperalism.
Most modern writers are so divorced from traditional European Christian imagery and the anti-Celtic sentiment that is baked into Britain's colonial influence that changing the hair colour (and many other types of less obvious bigotry regarding ethnic groups), etc, of a character in an adpatation is pointless and petty to be bothered by.
But in some cases - especially with older books - the ethnicities matter.
So, while I totally get the value of judging whether an adaptation has artistc merit as its own work, and I could talk all day about death of the author/director, more often than not, when ethnicity issues and themes are stripped from a book's adaptation to make the heroic characters whiter/more English ...the adaptation is bad and does lack artistic merit, because it keeps the plot and removes the themes and meanings and tensions the plot is built on, which leads to characters making decisions and saying things that make no sense, because the reasons for doing and saying those things are gone.
And that's how you get Emerald Fennell's "Wuthering Heights".
love the trope where an authoritative side character pointedly pretends not to help the hero they’re not supposed to be helping by saying shit like “well I can’t just let you wander around up to the THIRD FLOOR where you could just FIND THE THING YOU NEED in the FIRST ROOM ON THE LEFT. And under no circumstances should you USE THE KEY FROM UNDER THE MAT. I wish I could help you, but I CAN’T. Now excuse me, I need to take this phone call for the next 37 minutes EXACTLY.”
My doctor did that for me once. I had to get an expensive brain scan and she was like ‘do you smoke?’ and I was like ‘no’ and she was like “well that’s a pity because the government will pay for this expensive brain scan if you had been a smoker so - do you smoke?” 🤣🤣🤣 I was like ‘yes’ and she’s like ‘oh wow then this scan will be free’
do any of you even enjoy reading or watching fiction at all? if i wanted the plot with virtually nothing else i would read the wikipedia page
"I don't like infodumping!" makes sense "or unnecesary details like what the characters are eating!" not much of one for worldbuilding, then "and I only want books with rich worldbuilding" that's. you literally ruled out all the options for worldbuilding.

the second eel at the end in its little cuck shelter 💜
eel deets from @whitefangthefightingwolf
India's carbondioxide emissions per person is half the global average, while USA's is 7× to 8× times higher than India, 3.5× to 4× times the global average, yet USAmericans are the ones comfortably sitting with air conditioners in their office jobs while Indians die in heatwaves in outside manual labor jobs
And even then its the Indians who contribute the least who are the most vulnerable, it's not the Indians who own shares in oil companies being inconvenienced, it is the workers who work in farms under the sun, those who work in physical construction, outside in manual labor, the regular families who can't afford to move somewhere where there aren't regular blackouts. It's simply not fair, you understand
