Ok yeah imma need everyone to go watch the documentary Howard right now
I do mean everyone, but for particulars if youāre interested in:
- Queer history (specifically the U.S. AIDS epidemic of the 1980s)
- Disney history (specifically Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin)
- Musical theatre history (Little Shop of Horrors, Smile)
You should be very interested in this. And it made me cry.
Itās about Howard Ashman, writer/lyricist behind many of the aforementioned films, and how he created all of that while battling AIDS.
I saw a lot of people talking about how Part of Your World was written by a gay man in the 80s, which is how I found the documentary. And I think thatās very important context that makes me love the story even more.
But I have not seen people talking about everything else like:
⢠How parts of both Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast were written from hospital beds and over the phone
⢠How some people of his inner circle speculated that āThe Mob Songā (Beauty and the Beast) and āPrince Ali Repriseā were inspired by his declining health (note that this was just their speculations after he died, he never confirmed this)
⢠How he tried and somehow managed to hide his disease for years through productions
⢠How scared he was that someone would find out and judge him for it
⢠How he often was described as āhard to work withā but those who knew, knew that it was because of his disease and the anxiety over not having a lot of time left
⢠How he and his partner never got married since they couldnāt, but his partner was there until the end
⢠How he had an ex boyfriend and many friends who died of AIDS before him
⢠How he didnāt even want to get tested when they suspected it was AIDS because apparently he could loose his damn insurance if it was on his record
Sorry this is a longer post than I usually do and Iām not even a documentary kind of guy, but oh my god this gave me so much to think about and I think yāall should too
