That was delicious. I genuinely don't think I've seen anyone line up those scene parallels so well before. This was a perfect snapshot of every branch, rock, and mattress they hit on their way down

something about the way shakespeare's plays are positioned to just barely cover the untold tragedies lurking underneath. lady macbeth knows how tender the babe is that milks her yet the macbeths have no child to pass the crown to. iago mentions that othello saw his own brother shot to pieces by cannons. olivia was planning to grieve her brother for 7 years until she met viola. beatrice knew benedick of old. lady capulet was only fourteen when she gave birth to juliet. it drives me crazy to see all the untold stories peeking out between the lines of the main plot.
I've seen lots of people saying that some of the knights are more loyal to Merlin than they are Arthur (gwaine, Lancelot) and while I won't say you're wrong what I will say is:
If a situation ever arose where the knights felt they had to choose between the two. I have zero doubt in my mind that Merlin would be BEYOND PISSED at any knight that chose him over Arthur, especially if they had already sworn fealty and loyalty to Arthur.

...wrong server buddy!!!
Don't worry the audience extrapolated it back out. You zip the file and communicate it, they unzip it.
This is the best explanation of the reader's contribution to art I've ever heard.
possibly the best ever piece of american sports journalism
Standard sword and sorcery fantasy film periodically interrupted by cutaways to an in-universe historian from a notional period hundreds of years after the depicted events explaining the film's various historical inaccuracies. There's a recurring tangent about how the film's protagonist is a conflation of three different guys, all of them much weirder than the end product of that conflation.
The Odyssey but retold as a low-stakes modern adventure of one guy out with his girlfriend leaving the bar with his buddies to do just one (1) simple thing real quick, it'll take like 15 minutes tops, he'll be right back, but then some bullshit happens and the trip keeps getting more complicated as more bullshit keeps happening while he just tries to get back to the bar because he promised his girlfriend that he'd get back and he knows that she's still there because she told him she'd wait there.
And by the time he finally gets back it's almost 3 am and the bar is about to close while she's sitting there stone cold sober, surrounded by 5 drunk guys unsuccessfully trying to convince her to give up on waiting for him and go home with one of them instead. And the guy shows up to proceed to beat the shit out of them before explaining himself to her like hey sorry bullshit kept happening, my phone fell into a storm drain and my wallet got stolen when I was trying to find someone who'd borrow me a phone so I could call and

The ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything, is "what the fuck is 6 7"
The computer, sadly, misinterpreted the space as multiplication.
"average person experiences 8.1 microagressions in a month" factoid actualy just statistical error. I, a high school and middle school teacher who has three lessons with 13 year olds every Monday morning, experience 20 microagressions a minute adn should not have been counted

Random linguistic worldbuilding: A language with six sets of pronouns, which are set by one's current state of existence. There's a separate pronoun for people who are alive, people who are dead, and potential future people who are yet to be born, and the ambiguous ones of "may or may not be alive or aleady dead", "may or may not have even been born yet", and the ultimate general/ambiguous all-covering one that covers all ambiguous states.
The culture has a specific defined term for that tragic span of time when a widow keeps accidentally referring to their spouse with living pronouns. New parents-to-be dropping the happy surprise news of a pregnancy by referring to their future child with the "is yet to be born" pronoun instead of a more ambiguous one and waiting for the "wait what did you just say?" reactions.
Someone jokingly referring to themselves with the dead person pronouns just to highlight how horrible their current hangover is. A notorious aspiring ladies' man who keeps trying to pursue women in their 20s despite of approaching middle age fails to notice the insult when someone asks him when he's planning to get married, and uses the pronoun that implies that his ideal future bride may not even be born yet.
A mother whose young adult child just moved away from home for the first time, who continues to dramatically refer to their child with "may or may not be already dead" until the aforementioned child replies to her on facebook like "ma stop telling people I'm dead" and having her respond with "well how could I possibly know that when you don't even write to us? >:,C"
@witchofanguish it is also used in poetry and plays, ghosts talk like that. Imagine being in a folk story, staying overnight in an abandoned cabin and in the middle of the night there's a knock on the door and a bellowing voice going
LET ME IN.
and from the "me" alone you know that whoever is out there is not one among the living.
ok but also: imagine the mysterious stranger implying that they don't know whether they themselves are alive or dead.
Ghost stories where the characters don't know they're ghosts and keep referring to themselves by living pronouns, where the audience doesn't know they're dead for most of the story. Ghosts that signal that they're ready to move on by using I'm-dead pronouns.
Referring to someone as "you" (dead) as a threat, to say they're living on borrowed time.
So my problem with most āget to know your characterā questioneers is that theyāre full of questions that just arenāt that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)Ā Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If Iām doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought Iād share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:Ā
What is the characterās go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)Ā
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)Ā
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things wereĀ ānormalā for them growing up is important.)
Describe the shoes theyāre wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is leastĀ favorite holiday.)Ā
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What doesĀ ānormalā even look like for them.)Ā

40,000 years ago, early humans painted hands on the wall of a cave. This morning, my baby cousin began finger painting. All of recorded history happened between these two paintings of human hands. The Nazca Lines and the Mona Lisa. The first TransAtlantic flight and the first voyage to the Moon. Humanity invented the wheel, the telescope, and the nuclear bomb. We eradicated wild poliovirus types 2 and 3. We discovered radio waves, dinosaurs, and the laws of thermodynamics. Freedom Riders crossed the South. Hippies burned their draft cards. Countless genocides, scientific advancements, migrations, and rebellions. More than a hundred billion humans lived and died between these two paintingsāone on a sheet of paper, and one on the inside of a cave. At the dawn of time, ancient humans stretched out their hands. And this morning, a child reached back.Ā
A Timeline of Humanity:
