Like getting told "don't look behind you", and of course you look behind you, even though you desperately don't want there to be anything at all bad behind you. Except John made that his whole life. Also, doesn't being the archivist specifically enable him to pick out the real statements to make the tapes with? I'm pretty sure I remember that being a thing. And presumably, he wouldn't have had that ability to pick the real ones before getting tangled up with the Eye, so even though the ones we hear in the show are all real, maybe most of the supernatural reports in-universe are nonetheless fake. He was a researcher at the Magnus Institute for years before he became the head archivist, right? So he would have probably gotten used to seeing fakes, and naturally would have expected more fakes on his first day as Head Archivist. But when he got that job, I think that's when the Eye got him/started leading him to the real ones. Or even if that took a while, Gertrude's office would have been pre-filtered for the real ones, anyways. The sheer audacity of the skepticism in Season 1 is still funny tho :P

one of the things that they told us in the worm episode(s) was that even from the start, only the 'real' reports got recorded on the tape. like, Jon went to his computer, tried to read out a report, and if it glitched he went "OH so it's a real one" and went to record it on tape. AND EVEN AFTER ALL OF THAT, HE STILL ACTED LIKE A SUPER SKEPTIC
