I guess the reason I've never been a fan of video game streaming – at least outside of certain specialised contexts, like speedrunning exhibitions – is that watching people play video games is a form of parallel play for me, and that simply doesn't work when one's relationship with the player is impersonal. I don't want to kibbitz in a moderated stream chat. I want to sit on a couch behind them eating potato chips just loudly enough to be slightly annoying while maintaining plausible deniability that I'm doing it on purpose, and when they curse the developer's mother after missing the same fucking platform cycle for the 37th time in a row, I want to shout "yeah!" like a henchman backing up the boss in a classic mob flick and know that I'm being heard.
