My detailed plan for a Dracula adaptation that doesn’t inevitably disappoint people:

I get the movie greenlit. The budget is a billion dollars. Everyone wants to know why. That feels excessive.

The trailer comes out. It’s obscene. Explosions. Out of place sex scenes. Someone’s hanging off the side of a train at one point. Also the train is on fire. Quincey lassos Dracula at one point. Wait, there’s a cowboy in Dracula? Gun fights. Dracula with a glock. Those didn’t exist back then. Blood everywhere. Whatever other shit needs to be there to bait people into seeing the movie.

People see the movie out of morbid curiosity. This is the theatre exclusive run. They come in and sit down. The lights dim.

Then they brighten again. The doors lock. It was a trap. There was glue on all of the seats. Now they’re all trapped. The trailer was all that was filmed and the entire budget was used.

I come out with a copy of Dracula. No one is allowed to leave until they listen to me read the entire thing. I do this in every cinema in the world. When I’m done, they can leave. No one will believe them.

Bonus when it comes out on streaming: the victims of the cinema run start posting online. Everyone thinks it’s fake but they watch the movie anyway. They can’t help themselves. They press play. I emerge from the floorboards. They’re glued to the nearest surface. I hold them hostage in their own home and they listen to the entire novel. Then I release them.

Over eight billion people on earth. When I’m done, there will be no one left to claim Dracula is romantically involved with Mina. It’s foolproof.

i will never stop people from hating a minecraft white boy (especially one who drives a tesla) but i do think its funny when i see hermitcraft fans hate grian for "being clique-y" or "ignoring the smaller hermits" . like. you mean the guy who starts server wide games every season? the guy who uploaded a 7 hour world tour? frankly for being one of the most popular guys on the server i think he does try to pull his weight sharing the love. unfortunately theres only so much you can do to try and lure an average grian subscriber into watching joe hills. thats like taking a mcdonalds loving 7 year old to a niche concept restaraunt that only serves meals in the shape of 1:1 scale models. actually this metaphor sucks if i was 7 i would love to eat an edible 1:1 scale pinball machine. i would love that now. post cancelled im organising a joe hills themed pop up café. everyone come with me. see my vision.

australia was colonised according to the myth of terra nullius (or empty land). ever since the very early days of colonialism, the land has been framed as something untameable and unliveable. this has justified acts of violence against the first peoples here, in that they are seen as non-people. it has justified the destruction of sacred land in the goal of making australia look more european. (an example: our capital city contains a man-made lake that is now nothing better than a fetid carp pond. it’s disgusting and unnatural). basically, the idea of “taming australia’ has justified endless harm

I think there is space to talk about the ways Australia is relatively unique or at least different to other places: our snakes and spiders are more dangerous than anyone else's, but our native bees and 'bears' are safer. You might die of sunstroke but you won't die in a blizzard, earthquake, or tornado.

Australia is not especially dangerous, or unfriendly, it's just 'different', but then the question is different to what. Why should deadly earthquakes and forests full of murderous bears be seen as more normal? Why is a desert any more weird or scary than a bog or tundra? Why are cold damp places seen as the only form of natural beauty, why do people see warm dry places as dead when they are full of life, and see warm damp places as full of TOO MUCH life somehow? Why, even in Australia, do we use the aesthetics of red October leaves and Christmas snow, and not celebrations of the beautiful seasonal changes we actually see all around us? Why are white Australians so actively hostile to engaging and connecting with the local cultures that have been celebrating and working with the place we live for thousands of years, and even after hundreds of years still see our home as Strange?

Also I read through the replies and people point out that exactly the same sort of exotification into a Dangerous Alien Landscape Which Must Be Tamed happens with Africa, Asia, The Middle East etc. Even like... Scotland and Italy, back in the day. And for similar reasons. And this kind of imagery is everywhere, like play any video game with multiple biomes or cultures etc (real or fictional) and see which ones are treated as Normal and which ones are Weird and Scary/Exotic.
