My favorite interpretation of the Life series memory fuckery is that the players memories aren't necessarily lost, but really hazy. Little things stick out to them (like putting names to faces, but not knowing how they know the person), but if they try to grab onto an actual memory, it gets harder to envision. Think of it like trying to remember a dream after the fact; it'll be present in your mind if you don't actively think about it (or try to forget it), but if you try to remember the dream in its entirety, it disappears entirely.

I remember one of the cc's stating at some point that everyone remembers everything from past series, but the emotions connected to those memories disappear. Like seeing their memories in black and white.
