I've been thinking about "you cannot solve systemic problems with individual action" a lot lately and it's like. It's not that it's wrong exactly but I feel like it's become a thought-terminating cliche, a rallying cry for apathy and inaction.
You can't change anything with your actions so don't bother. You going vegetarian won't shut down a factory farm so don't bother. You buying something in sustainable packaging won't make a dent in the landfill so don't bother. You donating five bucks to a charity won't solve poverty so don't bother. You buying ethically-made clothing won't stop sweatshops from operating so don't bother.
I agree that the only way these problems are going to get solved is if the government enacts regulations to do so, but the key point here is that the government is not going to spontaneously do that. Everybody says they want to protect the environment and for people to make a living wage in the abstract but as soon as regulations start being passed people start throwing fits about how it's impacting their lives.
If the government banned factory farms, meat would suddenly be priced like a luxury item and people would throw fits about how poor people can't afford protein anymore, if they banned plastic packaging people would throw fits about how we're expected to bear the increased production costs, if they banned imports of items made in sweatshops or by slave labor people would throw fits about how they can't get their coffee and chocolate and electronics anymore.
There's a post on here about how community river clean-ups don't actually make much of an impact on water pollution, because the major cause of water pollution isn't random trash but industrial and agricultural run-off. But the clean-ups are still extremely valuable because they get the community invested in the cause of water pollution, the community starts taking pride in their local environment and start actually caring about environmental regulations on a personal level, and that grants activists the buy-in to push for changes that actually can reduce water pollution.
We absolutely must get individual buy-in before we can expect systemic change. You can't solve systemic problems with individual action, but you can't solve them without it either. Making small changes to your consumption habits isn't going to fix the world, but it gets people invested in and connected to the cause, it makes them feel like they're part of a larger movement, and it primes them to think of these regulations as wins for that movement rather than a sacrifice being forced upon them by the government.
"No individual solution for systemic problems" seems like it's just become a way to justify not having to actually do any work to address issues you claim to care about. It's just "surely someone will do something eventually" writ large.
This really resonates, as someone who has been on the âI have to take cold three minute showersâ side and the âwhatâs the point if a pair of jeans takes 1000 gallons of water to makeâ side, my advice for people struggling with this conundrum is very simple: volunteer for one thing. Just one. Start with a single cause in your community that you can reasonably dedicate a few hours a week to supporting. Some examples are food pantries, public park gardening and maintenance, wildlife rehab, tutoring, queer community centers, and of course waterfront cleanups. The expectation isnât that this will change the world, but that you will start to see yourself as part of the solution instead of part of the problem. Youâll spend time with people who are trying to make the world a better place and youâll believe in your shared mission, and that will rub off on other people and bring them into the fold. This is how communities change, which is how cultures change, which is how systems change.
The reason Kirk is so accommodating of Spock pretending he doesnât have emotions is because he is also pretending he doesnât have emotions like fear or anger or lust and probably has wished taht he was a Vulcan so he could be a more perfect captain send post
the kids are calling them "stone fruits." they start off smallâthink cherries. then they're hooked and they need a quick fix, they get peaches, maybe some nectarines. it's all they can think about. before you know it, they're trying the really hard stuffâapricots, plums. once they taste a mango there's no going back.

spock is the greatest character of all time because he lives in a society without homophobia but managed to reinvent internalized homophobia from first principles
the sisko kirk hero worship homoeroticism would be entirely reversed if kirk ever showed up on ds9 thru his own time travel circumstances because the first thing that would happen is he would meet quark and the thing about kirk is there is nobody in the entire space and time of the universe that would annoy him more than quark it would immediately be like the worst day he ever experienced it would be like nonstop torment trying to understand why these things keep happening to him and then he would see sisko tactfully handling quark or god forbid see him getting quark to kiss the nagus scepter and like it would be over for him like sisko handling quark related paperwork would be the single most heroic thing hes ever seen like he would become immediately obsessed and bewitched

Have you experienced the Tetris Effect in any way?
Yes
No
The Tetris effect occurs when someone dedicates substantial time, effort, and concentration to an activity and thereby alters their thoughts, dreams, and other experiences not directly linked to said activity.

There's an open pit in the middle of our office plan that drops down into a bunch of very sharp spikes that kill you instantly. This is bad. People keep falling in there and dying. Someone put a sign up, the other day, all bright yellow so you can't miss it, that says "Beware!!! Spikes!!!"
The office immediately split into two factions over it. One says that if anyone falls in the spike pit it's their own fault for being so stupid and not watching where they're walking, so we should remove the sign. The other says that the sign is an insult, there shouldn't be a spike pit in our office at all, and having the sign up like that is just normalising the existence of the spike pit, so we should remove the sign.
We ended up removing the sign. Probably for the better. Still... for a while there it looked like it might have worked...
Nobody has ever been capable of writing a scathingly harsh and well formulated satire about the perils of modern capitalism, that doesn't just get immediately one-upped by some random food service worker talking about their actual week.
I feel like starfish are one of those animals that are treated as very ânormalâ by people but absolutely shouldnât be. Like theyâre a wheel of repeating heads connected by a central stomach. They walk around using thousands of tiny sticky hydraulically powered tentacles. They have an eye on the end of each arm. Instead of having a mouth they just have an opening where their entire stomach can be pushed out to engulf prey. And theyâre just allowed to exist like this. Itâs not illegal or anything.
there are few experiences more disappointing and embarrassing to be had than when you manage to convince yourself that something was loaded with erotic subtext and feel like the most intelligent sensitive pervert on earth, only to realise that was only the case because you misread or misunderstood an essential element of context which completely transforms if not outright removes any hint of eroticism
ohhhh okay so i just straight up hallucinated it like a desert mirage. i AM too horny and it IS making me stupid. the 1890s called; there's someone named sigmund freud on the phone who'd like to talk to you about these dreams you've been having.

The new Odyssey adaptation has inevitably gotten people talking about a Muppet version of it, and theyâre frequently suggesting Kermit as Odysseus, Miss Piggy as Penelope.
Iâm sorry but thatâs thinking way too small, hear me out:
We need to have Miss Piggy as Odysseus, and Kermit as Penelope.
Think about it⌠whoâs the more fickle, prideful, warlike one in that relationship? Who is absolutely ready to go ham, at a momentâs notice?
It ainât Kermit
