(defense) attorney culture is like the opposite of cop culture. lawyers hate all other lawyers with a barely concealed passion, yes, even their partners at the law firm. no solidarity, 85% drama and 15% social niceties. they’ll hang out together socially on occasion but they hate each other to their core. they’re like betta fish.
cop: Officer Misconduct would do that, he’s a good lawman, he was the best man at my wedding and I’m lucky to have known him.
doctor: I’ve worked with my colleague, Dr. Malpractice, for 15 years now and I have never witnessed the behavior you are describing.
defense attorney: Yeah, that sounds like something that stupid bastard would try. He doesn’t have the good sense to navigate his way out of a wet cardboard box, much less construct a sound legal defense. He has the integrity of a fucking gnat too. When we were in law school 35 years ago, he barfed in the back seat of my Mercedes after a night out and he never paid to get it cleaned. Even his wife can’t stand him. Fucker. I hate that guy.
Aaron Burr & Alexander Hamilton were defense co-counsel on a murder trial 4 years before the duel.
Indeed, it is a job for haters and lovers who, above all else, like to argue.

What if we banned all advertising? Not regulate it—abolish it. This proposal would transform manipulation machines, and maybe save democracy
Even as an advertiser (especially as an advertiser), I am convinced that outlawing advertising is the best thing we can do for our world now. More than gun control. More than tackling climate change. More than lowering the price of eggs. Removing these advanced manipulation tools would force everyone—politicians included—to snap back into reality. By outlawing advertising, the machinery of mass delusion would lose its most addictive and toxic fuel.
I started out reading this smugly saying to myself yeah, right.
But by the end I'm sold. Let's ban advertising.
We can start small, maybe with city ordinances. Then roll it out county wide, then at the state level. Once other states see how quiet and sane things can be, they'll adopt the ban too. The ones that don't will remain snarling islands of rage & delusion until the people move away.
Let's ban advertising.
the entire state of vermont already banned roadside billboards years and years ago. change is possible!!
With the knowledge that Vulcan has regularly high winds & subsequent sandstorms I propose a type of guy: midwestern dads watching tornadoes but for Vulcans. Somebody's uncle Sovar standing outside with his hands on his hips watching a massive cloud roll closer. Unconcerned because this happens, like, every couple of weeks. He's like "this one is large, is it not" yes it is go back inside Sovar
The one Vulcan aspect Kirk can excel at.
Kirk: “Oh yeah I’m from Iowa. It’s part of something called tornado alley.”
Spock: “Where’s the captain? The storm is getting worse.”
Crewman: “He’s out there with the other Vulcans. He told us to wait in the shuttle.”

My favorite scenes in the LotR books are the ones where Legolas has vital information and just decides it's not important to share.
Like when Gandalf spent literal PAGES trying to figure out why the vibes were off in Moria and Legolas chimes in with just "it's a balrog :) that shit's evil :) we're so fucked :)" like what do you MEAN you knew already and just didn't tell him??
Or at the beginning of Two Towers when Aragorn thinks there's something nearby so he puts his ear to the ground to listen, and then like 10 minutes later is like "hmmm i hear horses" and Legolas is just like "mm yep. there are 105 blond bitches with spears" like you just let your friend put his face in the dirt and you can SEE them??
Legolas please gain a sense of urgency
It's because legolas hasn't spent enough time with non-elves to remember that they don't know what he knows.
gandalf is scratching his head in moria, and legolas is thinking "oh man, the wizard noticed something off *besides* the obvious balrog that we all are aware of??"
"I wonder what aragorn is listening for? must be hard to hear, what with all of the horses. How many horses are there, actually? 1... 2... 3..."
"What do your elvish eyes see?" is Aragorn saying, as politely as possible, "Because the REST OF US are at a significant disadvantage, Prince Dipshit."

the fact 50% of jewelry on etsy now is AI generated designs or AI generated images of stuff that doesn't exist... i don't know how much longer i can do the internet.
it's honestly harder and harder not to se everything as garbage unless you can touch it with your hands or see it in real life with your real eyes. i think my online spending is down 90%. i probably order something once every two months now and only if it's something i've already seen once before or can be sure actually exists. almost every search i do turns up AI generated SEO garbage so i rarely click through to any website unless it's a 6 year old reddit post. i'll take anecdotal evidence over AI generated vagueness. i don't really look for new music anymore, because most of what i listened to (instrumentals) is now AI generated stuff. i rarely if ever see a sign or logo anymore that isn't AI generated and full of false info--a ren faire i went to on saturday got in huge trouble for AI generating their map and all their signage which ended up not being even slightly accurate. the AI is getting more and more inaccurate because it has nothing to feast on but itself, so we have AIs posting reddit posts to try to generate more training data and major companies in a race to see how many rare books they can cannibalize the fastest to feed more into a machine that by definition will never be accurate or satisfied. it will always require an exponentially greater amount of food for an exponentially shittier product at exponentially higher energy costs... for what? what are we doing here? and now we're heading into an election season and we have no guard rails, no wheels, and no driver. and you can't even escape it because everyone over the age of 35 has no defenses against AI and will with full faith send you the most obvious AI garbage slop you have ever seen being like "IS THIS REAL?" no. no, it isn't. nothing is on the internet anymore.

Why do kiwis have such massive fucking eggs “it’s because they are related to ostriches and-“ yeah ok but like why didn’t they evolve smaller eggs if I was in charge I would do that shit pronto. Thoughts?
their big eggs are actually that size for a similar reason to human babies having massive heads!! being bigger at birth can be important.
kiwi are trying SO HARD to become mammals. fur-like feathers, whisker-like feathers, little beady eyes, nocturnal, great sense of smell.... that's basically a mammal!! they're well suited for life on the forest floor.
their big eggs work alongside these adaptations to give them a leg up in the bird world. their young hatch already feathered! they're precocial, which means they're born with the ability to open their eyes and move around. like foals.
big egg = more powerful offspring from the get-go. babies don't need to spend precious time vulnerable while they develop on the ground when they've already done all that in the egg!
(unfortunately, with the introduction of mammals to aotearoa, these adaptations are a little less useful...)
Important addition: baby kiwi come out of the egg looking like they've come out of a shower with a hangover
They look like one of the downsides of emerging from an egg fully formed is how aware you are off just having come out on egg. First minute alive, already dealing with some fucking experience.
In June, I had the first real hurdle in my relationship. I won't go into the details, but I was on a narcolepsy medication that makes people more prone to addictive behaviors. It did so with me.
During this time, my closest friend was extremely busy with work, I couldn't afford therapy because I was struggling to even make rent, and I didn't have someone I could talk to.
I have OCD. One of my compulsions is "checking" and it often takes the form of googling. Googling a word I know just to check that the definition hasn't changed. Googling whether xyz is normal. Googling how to choose some relatively unimportant things.
I googled all kinds of things. I googled to find out if there's a word for intentionally letting someone hear you cry in hopes that they'll comfort you. (Not because I was doing that, but because I had an overwhelming urge to.) I googled odds of relationship survival after addiction. I googled how to tell if your partner has stopped loving you.
And Google ai overview answered every single question. And on mobile, when I was curled up in the dark at 4am, there's a convenient text box to ask the AI a follow-up question. And the AI says things like "that's a hard situation to be in" and "that must be painful to hear"
And I'm not a fucking idiot. I know perfectly well that AI is trained to be sycophantic and that talking to a fucking LLM about my relationship fears was a massive mistake.
I was also terrified, alone, heartbroken, and desperate.
I spent literally hours of time googling questions on AI mode. Holding conversations with the AI. I have stickers on my laptop and water bottle that say "AI Hater Club" and "generative AI? Nein danke" and I wish Sam altman would fall off the face off the earth.
And none of that mattered. I was desperate. I recognized that, and once things began to calm down (my doctor took me off of the narcolepsy med and put me on a medication for addiction called Naltrexone, I was able to start therapy again, my partner and I worked together and took steps to repair what was damaged) I stopped turning to it for an open shoulder.
But I realized a few days ago that I hadn't stopped using the ai entirely. I would Google "best [item] on a budget" and instead of reading a cnet link that reviewed multiple brands, instead of checking consumer reports, I expanded the AI overview and asked follow-up questions.
I'm currently finishing up an astrophysics internship for the summer. Usually when I don't know how to code something, I look at the documentation or find a post on Reddit or stack overflow to explain. Instead, I was asking Google overview for instructions on how to use sys.argv. At no point was I vibe coding, but I was basically asking Google ai to walk me through it like a tutor.
And then, last week, I realized that I no longer Google things the same way. I used to search like "pokemon sun and moon original release date" but lately I've been searching "what year did pokemon sun and moon come out?" Even my checking OCD has changed. I used to Google "n30i mask cleaning +seal +oily" and now I Google "I use a resmed n30i CPAP mask and it keeps losing its seal when I'm trying to sleep. My face gets kind of greasy when I have it on. I already clean it with CPAP wipes every day and run it under water to rinse, do I need a different kind of mask?"
A few days ago, the news about Hank Green using LLMs to find research papers dropped, and I saw his response on Reddit. I saw the way he talked about the dopamine hit he got from it. And something clicked.
I had to install a different OS launcher on my phone so I could change the search bar widget to Firefox search instead of Google, because that's the only way to ensure I don't get the ai overview when I Google something. It's actually really frustrating because I instinctively search in long rambling questions, which does not work well. But I'm having a hard time going back to how I was.
People who suffer from AI addiction are not idiots, we aren't moral failures, we aren't traitors. We are victims of a predatory system and we need support, not smug superiority aimed in our direction.
Reblogging myself to add that when I first started this post, I was so afraid of the backlash that I was writing the post about my "friend" who came to this realization. Because y'all are fucking disgusting with how you treat people who aren't pure and untainted by the sin of using LLMs.
Dang it Beans you get back here and say that out loud!!!
but there actually are some social cues that can be taught. like the obvious one is when someone says “how are you” they usually mean “friendly noise” and are not actually asking how you are, although some people ARE genuinely asking how you are and it’s usually up to the context of your relationship to determine the difference
also that apparently “when you get a chance” usually means “when you take a break from the thing you’re immediately doing” and not “on a list among various other things you are doing today or tomorrow”
and when someone says “i’ll let you get going” they mean “please leave”
oh and you have to learn to weaponize “thank you for your understanding”. which means “there is nothing you can do about this so accept it”
might I add "thanks for your patience" = "things are going as fast as they can reasonably go and if you keep asking when it's going to be done you will actively slow the process down through your constant pestering"
Ok so your post about the emergency alert reminded me of something VERY FUNNY about it which is that a) my parents also live where there's currently lots of fire, we could see it from the party they threw at the weekend and b) they live in Wales, and so had a slightly different experience of the alert.
Now, the thing about Wales is that *by law* all official government communication must be bilingual. Which means that in Wales, everyone got 2 alerts: one in welsh, and one in english.
Unfortunately, by law the welsh must happen *first*, and so the whole of wales got the fire alert in Welsh: A language that approximately 5% of the population speak well enough to actually understand what was going on.
So imagine, the emergency alert noise goes off. You open your phone. And the most *incomprehensible* collection of letters appear to you. You live in wales, so you know what Welsh looks like, but this is not the vocabulary that you usually see at the train station or on the letter from the council. And it's the emergency alert system. It's probably both Important and Urgent
So people all over Wales are using google lense or whatever to try and get a translations of this alert because this is clearly something Life Threatening. A frantic five minutes for the whole country.
And then the alert arrives in English.
Of course, now the joke is that this is how they force the Welsh Language on people: by making it clear that only Welsh Speakers will be saved from the atom bomb.
this is one of the funniest things i have Ever heard. as someone who grew up in cornwall, which desperately wants to be wales in terms of language and independence but simply doesnt have the push, imagining a universe in which i receive a kernow-only emergency text that is functionally meaningless to me but still sends the terrifying sirens off on your phone to make you think there's a bomb threat is kind of the premise of a horror movie . and that really is how they motivate u to revive a dead language

after my last concussion I had this weird thing for a few weeks where I like, didn't want to get hurt? like if I thought I might get hurt doing something that made me not want to do it. has anyone else ever experienced this?
Concept: cursed blade rehabilitation center. Destroying a sentient weapon is expensive and highly unethical, so adventurers bring them to the center where highly trained staff can care for them and eventually find them forever homes. It turns out most cursed weapons are products of trauma and are not strictly evil themselves. Some blades turn out to be fiercely protective companions. Others don't even want to be weapons at all, finding joy in simple work like blacksmithing or farming. Most blades just need to be loved.
A pack of bandits descend upon a seemingly undefended town. But the blacksmith's hammer, the farmer's scythe, the woodsman's axe, they have not forgotten what they once were, and they *will* defend the town that they have come to love.
This sweet girl has been with us for seven seasons. She was forged in the heart of a volcano and would be ideal for anyone with a preexisting fire affinity (she's a cuddler and is guaranteed to keep you warm in winter). She still loves burning, but it turns out you can only reduce the world to ash once. She would be perfectly suited for forest management that regularly requires controlled burns.
This weary old soul has grown tired of bloodshed and would much rather spend his days as an ominous decoration in a tavern or common room, a perfect fit for an adventurer looking to leave their dungeon crawling days behind. He likes peoplewatching with his single glowing eye, preferably from high, prominent locations with views of entrances and exits.
While it's fair to say that most rehabilitated weapons are not recommended for first-time wielders, this +2 Defiling Dancing Greatsword might be an exception that proves the rule! Once tempered in the blood of orphans, Greta has had a past that she's sought to grow beyond, and is eager to take a more proactive role in protecting her future lifetime companions. We're looking to find her a forever home with a group of young, earnest adventurers or a single child destined to thwart the legions of evil darkness, where Greta's protective and motherly instincts can really do good and fulfilling work.
For experienced swordbearers only! Lady is a 6-foot zweihander with severe abandonment issues after a previous wielder died in the lowest level of the Lich King's least-favorite summer crypt, where Lady went undiscovered for nearly 300 years. She is looking for a forever home where she can always be close at hand to her person. While she doesn't mind mowing down the odd bandit gang, she has taken surprisingly well to ornamental hedge trimming, and enjoys observing tai chi.
Sword that glows in the presence of its enemies now working as a child's nightlight now that it has accepted Darkness That Makes Children Scared as an enemy.
Darkness That Makes You Trip On The Way To The Bathroom is also an enemy.
The highly trained staff is a sentient wizard's staff and he's the only one there
