Jester, in response to this of course said “i don’t know what you’re talking about”, which while it gained some laughs from the group i think deserves some serious introspection. As other folks have pointed out, Artagan acts extremely differently from Trent or Thoreau, genuinely being proud of Jester and never claiming her accomplishments as his own - in fact he is more likely to point out the ways that Jester has influenced him for the better, rather than the reverse. Despite this difference, Beau still has a visceral negative reaction to him, perhaps moreso than any other member of the nein. Caleb, notably, is perhaps the most accepting of artagan. This is perhaps because artagan is so radically different from trent and because in his praise of Jester, he represents someone so radically different from a trent who was immovable and unimpressed. so why does Beau have this reaction to Artagan, when I’ve already proposed that trent and thoreau are so similar?

I’d argue that its because unlike Caleb, Beau saw a different type of relationship exist around her father. While Caleb was surrounded by peers who were treated in the same way by trent, Beau was alone with only her mother, who’s relationship with thoreau i would presume is still manipulative, just in quite a different way to Beau’s. While Beau could never live up to an impossible standard (be a boy, inherit the business, etc), Clara Lionett was the impossible standard for thoreau to attain. Beau and thoreau both tell us that her father came from nothing, but Beau adds in the detail that he wanted to gain wealth to marry her mother. Thus fundamentally, he had to change to become ‘worthy’ of her. We also know from the hag that the lionett household is a miserable one, and i can only imagine the amount of times that thoreau’s efforts to change were used against clara, in arguments and in unspoken conflict (I changed for you, i worked to attain this for you, etc).
