Just some good, old fashioned, crumbling southern building pictures. This one is on the intersection of highway 17 and 252 in White Oak, GA. 

This place is seriously neat. Too bad it was closed when we got there and we couldn't actually see inside any of the buildings. The Pin Point Heritage Museum is housed in an old oyster and crab canning factory and celebrates the Gullah/Geechee community of Pin Point. Learn more about the restoration and history here. Highlights: Johnny Mercer's "Moon River" is about the tidal river that flows in front of the museum. Also, Pin Point is the home town of U.S Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. They have a lot of activities worth checking out according to their Facebook page.

The Old Sheldon Church ruins in Yemmasee, SC. Yes, this site is all over the internet being a popular spot for weddings and engagement photos (see the best one here), but that doesn't mean it isn't really cool to visit! Especially on a lonely spring Friday with very few other visitors. The usual history: old, burned (by the British), rebuilt but still old, burned (by Sherman. Maybe.), almost forgotten, preserved, used as a wedding picture backdrop and nostalgic southern road trip stop.

Ah, yes. The humble bathtub in the woods. Who put it here? Who took the last bath before it was discarded? Why is the water so, so black? Was someone ever really excited to get this tub when it was brand new? If this was a clawfoot tub these questions would all have charming answers.

The Altamahaha. Darien, GA's most famous sea monster. The next time you cross the Altamaha river headed down I-95, keep a lookout.

Another great view of historic Altama Plantation! The "Playhouse" was built in the '30s by Cator Woolford. The entire property is home to his playhouse, pool and formal garden as well as significant pre-American Civil War historic sites such as former rice fields and a tabby sugar mill. The site is eligible for but not listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now planned for development.

Yes. This is really happening. On a Georgia barrier island near you. Lemur babies.

These palm trees were planted as a way to show the site of one of the earliest Spanish missions in America: Santa Catalina de Guale. It was searched for, found and excavated by THIS GUY who still does significant work on St. Catherines Island. Interesting fact: Five friars who were murdered just outside the mission walls are now candidates for sainthood. 

The red cedar! A known lover of calcium rich soil, they can be a marker for shell middens, tabby ruins or . . . cemeteries. This lovely specimen is growing from the tabby ruins of a slave cabin on St. Catherines Island, GA.
