Every time I see this quote I realize how poor even very smart people are at looking at the long game and at assessing these things in context.
One of my favourite illustrations of this was in a First Aid class. The instructor was a working paramedic. He asked, “Who here knows the stats on CPR? What percentage of people are saved by CPR outside a hospital?”
I happen to know but I’m trying not to be a TOTAL know it all in this class so I wait. And people guess 50% and he says, “Lower,” and 20% and so forth and eventually I sort of half put up my hand and I guess I had The Face because he eventually looked at me and said, “You know, don’t you.”
“My mom’s a doc,” I said. He gave me a “so say it” gesture and I said, “Four to ten percent depending on your sources.”
Everyone else looked surprised and horrified.
And the paramedic said, “We’re gonna talk a bit about some details of those figures* but first I want to talk about just this: when do you do CPR?”
The class dutifully replies: when someone is unconscious, not breathing, and has no pulse.
“What do we call someone who is unconscious, not breathing, and has no pulse?”
The class tries to figure out what the trick question is so I jump over the long pause and say, “A corpse.”
“Right,” says the paramedic. “Someone who isn’t breathing and has no heartbeat is dead. So what I’m telling you is that with this technique you have a 4-10% chance of raising the dead.”
So no, artists did not stop the Vietnam War from happening with the sheer Power of Art. The forces driving that military intervention were huge, had generations of momentum and are actually pretty damn complicated.
But if you think the mass rejection of the war was as meaningless as a soufflé - well.
Try sitting here for ten seconds and imagining where we’d be if the entire intellectual and artistic drive of the culture had been FOR the war. If everyone thought it was a GREAT IDEA.
What the whole world would look like.
Four-to-ten percent means that ninety to ninety-six percent of the time - more than nine times out of ten - CPR will do nothing, but that one time you’ll be in the company of someone worshipped as an incarnate god.
If you think the artists and performers attacking and showing up people like Donald Trump is meaningless try imagining a version of the world wherein they weren’t there.
(*if you’re curious: those stats count EVERY reported case of CPR, while the effectiveness of it is extremely time-related. With those who have had continuous CPR from the SECOND they went down, the number is actually above 80%. It drops hugely every 30 seconds from then on. When you count ALL cases you count cases where the person has already been down several minutes but a bystander still starts CPR, which affects the stats)
That Vonnegut quote brings this particular moment to mind:
Yes, it’s just a pie. Yes, the pie itself doesn’t do much direct damage in the grand scheme of things. But the pie is resistance, and resistance inspires resistance. Resistance inspires survival. Throwing pies sometimes starts a movement. Throwing pies sometimes saves lives.
And of course, we haven’t spoken about the inherent morality of throwing pies at oppressors in a world where oppressors have outlawed pie throwing. At the very least, pie throwing is a reminder to the oppressors that no matter how much money they have, no matter how much power they have, there are still some people, some moments they can’t control.
I’d rather go out throwing pies than just rolling over and accepting that pie throwing isn’t going to solve anything. Yeah, the pie throwing doesn’t immediately solve the problem, but it doesn’t have to because it’s just a starting point. So throw the damn pie.
So throw the damn pie
Your work is so gorgeous!!! I love how painterly your style is, I would love to watch a speed paint if you're comfortable because I feel like it would just be so satisfying
Ahhh your interest in my artstyle and works makes me so happy thank you so much!! I’ve been painting traditionally for over a decade so I guess that painterly vibe just naturally transferred into my digital work too, heh
I'd love to!! Still need to to figure out how to record speedpaints on Photoshop without making it crash though :'> I’m also thinking about doing some streams if I can carve out some free time!
Until then, I hope you enjoy the little thing I managed to save my Viktor art layer by layer! 🖤
Contrary to popular belief the biggest beginner's roadblock to art isn't even technical skill it's frustration tolerance, especially in the age of social media. It hurts and the frustration is endless but you must build the frustration tolerance equivalent to a roach's capacity to survive a nuclear explosion. That's how you build on the technical skill. Throw that "won't even start because I'm afraid it won't be perfect" shit out the window. Just do it. Just start. Good luck.
My adaptation of the God of Arepo short story, which was originally up at ShortBox Comics Fair for charity. You can get a copy of the DRM-free ebook here for free - and I'd encourage you to donate to Mighty Writers or The Ministry of Stories in exchange.
Again it's an honour to be drawing one of my favourite short stories ever. Thank you so much for the original authors for creating this story; and for everyone who bought a copy and donated to the above non-profits.
It never gets old and it always makes me cry.

a couple years ago the eric carle museum of picture book art had an exhibit on diane & leo dillon who are responsible for so many iconic illustrations. i went back twice just to see the collection again. this is a sliver of their work— it’s hard to find high res images.

The final blursed being in my Axolotl series! This has been so much fun and quite different from my usual subjects. Maybe some other cursed inspirations will strike me again the future~

President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of somehow serving a third term in office.
The GOP are already trying to make Trump king for life. They probably don't have enough votes to pass it this time but this is why every election counts. Assuming future elections are not rigged, local elections will make the difference between freedom and tyranny. And state and country governments have a huge impact too now. VOTE IN EVERY ELECTION. And get out and protest. Don't let them take our freedoms.
LOCAL ELECTIONS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE.
VOTE IN EVERY ELECTION NO MATTER HOW SMALL.
RUN FOR OFFICE IF YOU CAN.
CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES AND SAY YOU OPPOSE AMENDING OR REVOKING THE 22ND AMENDMENT. ORGANIZE. PROTEST. STAND UP.
They absolutely do not have anywhere near the numbers in Congress or the states to pass this
I know this is the Andy Ogles gargling Trump, but it's really just setting up for a major embarrassing face-plant. So when they face-plant, be prepared to laugh.
Oh absolutely. They definitely do NOT have the numbers...for now. And we need to keep it that way. That's why voting in every election - federal, state and local is so critical. And also why making our voices heard and showing there is a strong backlash to this is important.
This isn't aimed at actually succeeding right now. It's aimed at testing the waters and normalizing discussion of this idea. And we cannot allow that. We need to make sure we are heard loud and clear. Especially if you have GOP representatives, now's the time to call them.
And to think about how you can get involved in local activism to make sure that the numbers stay on our side. The GOP started small and consolidated thier power at the local level first and look where it took them. We need to do the same.
CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES AND SAY YOU OPPOSE THIS.
This doesn’t just need to fail. It needs to fail as resoundingly as possible.
Let’s make the bastards fail hard for the next twenty years
For those that are overwhelmed or frozen about the first step or what steps to take in what order, here is the website where you can locate your congresscritters and senators:
Find their number, write it down in a document.
Here is a small script you can use (that I will also be using), for when they pick up the phone. Just edit to match your current info.
Hello, my name is [Name] and I am one of [Poltician's Name]'s constituents. A proposition to amend or revoke the 22nd amendment (the one which limits presidential terms) has been introduced to the house. I am VERY STRONGLY opposed to this. I will never vote for anyone, including [congressperson/senator], if they vote in support of revoking or changing this amendment in order to allow longer or unlimited presidential terms.
If you have other things you need to contact them about, here's your reminder that you CAN lump them in together into one phone call. Now is the perfect opportunity to go through whatever "save for later/read later" tag you've made, find the things you need to contact your political offices for, and do it all at once. Multiple phone calls are great for blowing up phone lines with volume, but one phone call for multiple issues is better than no phone calls for any issues.
To use with other issues in the same call, you can copy/paste the script starting with the red line, add an "and also-" and just change the issue and for/against section to say what you want. You don't have to explain your reasoning, you don't have to make any arguments. Just "This is who I am (name), this is who I am contacting (congressperson/senator) and why (you're their constituent), this is the matter at hand (current political issue), and I am for/against this (your stance) and will not vote for anyone who doesn't agree with my stance (consequence for the politician)." Simple, quick, straight to the point. They don't really care why you have an opinion.... and they may or may not actually care what opinion you have. But they DO care about getting re-elected, all of them, so "I will not vote for you if you vote in support of shitty things and/or do not vote in support of good things" is important.
Additionally, you can find local election info here. Check it to see if your state/county is doing anything this year that you can be a part of voting in.
Go forth and have opinions. Vote. Resist.

really helpful technique ^ once you know how to divide by halves and thirds it makes drawing evenly spaced things in perspective waaay easier:
I met this nice girl through my college friend. She's my friend's childhood best friend and I had heard so much about her so I was really excited to finally meet her. The three of us hung out at a stupid school-sponsored event into the late hours of the night, drinking soda and eating pizza and getting to know each other. At the end of it, she entered into a raffle and ended up winning free tickets to Disneyland. We celebrated and parted ways. It was the highlight of that semester.
A few months later, Israel began dropping bombs on her family home. I watched from afar as her entire life fell apart and her family was displaced and killed. Every time I asked how she was doing, she was doing bad.
In Palestine, as in a lot of places in the world, it is shameful to ask for money. A little bit after the war began, I passed a message along to her family offering to help raise funds for their evacuation, but they declined saying that they didn't want pity from anyone. Now it seems like they're running out of options.
My friend has already lost so much so please spare her the additional indignity of asking for help and not receiving it. I can't imagine how soul crushing it would be to do something you believe to be shameful and for your effort to go to waste.
Their goal is only $5000 and they've already raised ~$760, I don't see why we can't raise the full amount within the next week.
For nearly a year, my family in Gaza has been forced to move from one place… Noura Elkhatib needs your support for Help 12 People in my Fami
Verified by the fact that this is literally my IRL. DM me if u wanna see her Instagram or other contact info proving she's real. Tumblr is a rather unsafe place for Palestinians so I'd rather not publicize all her personal info but I've been pretty careful with the fundraisers I boost on this blog so I hope you can trust me here.
