And on yesterday’s topic of personal grooming, at the risk of sounding like a looksmaxxer, you really do feel better when you feel like you look better. Putting the slightest bit of effort into your appearance can do wonders for your mental health. There is a reason every single culture on earth has grooming and styling standards and cultural forms of personal adornment and (often) bodily modification. I’m autistic and chronically ill and depressed and it is something I’ve experienced first hand. Not having the strength or desire to put effort into my appearance is demoralizing and then I’ll get dressed and style my hair and put on jewelry and a little glam rock makeup and realize it does make me feel better. These are things in my control, my appearance, things that I can change and tweak to make me feel better about myself even when the changes run counter to societal expectations and trends. There are a lot of men who feel like they are ugly (or have a sense of toxic masculinity that makes them feel like they shouldn’t groom themselves because it is somehow only for women) who would feel better if they just got a haircut and a new shirt. Not only is practicing basic hygiene when going out in public and dressing appropriately for events common courtesy but it does make you feel better about yourself. Get that haircut, get that tattoo, get that piercing, wear something weird.

Here is my entire table completely full of my rare freshwater shrimp specimens. UF kicked me out of the invertebrate zoology lab for telling too many people that their new iDigBio chatbot doesn't work I guess, so to make sure I can still do my research (and they don't either scoop me or throw everything out), I chose to take it all home with me and also to manually take all of my photos back out of their database.

I'm willing to do this in order to keep doing science while maintaining a scrap of integrity, and to keep my hard work safe from whatever fresh AI nonsense they're planning to inflict upon the rest of the museum. I'm here to make the world better, not worse.

I think it's really important to point out one of the major flaws in that highway analogy:

Eminent domain requires payment.

The government cannot come in and merely seize your land under eminent domain and pay you nothing. There is a process & they have to pay you market value for your land and the buildings on it. A couple of my former clients went through this about 15 years ago when the 202 Bypass went through in Montgomery & Bucks County in Pennsylvania. Their houses and land were taken via eminent domain so that the highway could be built, but, I need to say this again: they were paid.

They were paid and there was a process in which they were informed ahead of time. They didn't just drive home one day and find out their home had been snatched, too bad, so sad, no money for you, you should have put your house in a bank vault.

Just taking someone's shit like that without compensation has a name, and it's not eminent domain or anything like it:

It's fucking theft.

(I'm not interested in hearing the same tired shit about how copyright is inherently bad and only protects corporations, because as someone who deals with protecting my livelihood from scammers and scrapers via copyright every goddamned day, this isn't a fun mental exercise/philosophical debate for me, and you're absolutely wrong. Fucking save it for someone ignorant enough and with time to waste on that.)

The highway argument is also disingenuous in that ignores the very real harms caused by the systems that decide which neighborhoods to target and who precisely is going to be displaced. From numerous historically black neighborhoods being demolished to farmers being displaced and left with no livelihood. Anytime someone brings up an argument that states something is for the greater good, always ask yourself "for whose greater good?" Who benefits most, who gets harmed the most, what are the actual harms when you think through the logistics and future implications of the harms and not just the immediate harm, is there remuneration for the harm being caused, is it sufficient?

These are all things that must be asked before proceeding with any so called public works plan. Anyone who tells you otherwise is scamming you.

Oh, completely agreed. I only didn't go that far bc, like, you don't even need to before the argument entirely falls apart. But yeah, if people don't know about how eminent domain has been used to destroy Black neighborhoods in particular, they should read up and ask the questions.
