oh okay that clears it up. thanks
The thing about anti-libby posts, because ebooks have to be paid for yearly while physical books only have to be paid for once, is that yes, physical books are cheaper for the library to acquire- but the library has a budget they chose to allocate, whether it's on software, subscriptions to digital encyclopedias, or ebook rentals. If they chose to rent ebooks, it was because they want you to read them, and using any of their services looks good for them. Check out physical books by all means, but don't feel guilty about checking out ebooks.
Think of it as an accessibility measure.
"But wait," you say. "They're books. Physical objects. In a building. You don't have to pay to get into the building, or get the books. What do you need accessibility for? They're already accessible?"
Not if you've been hospitalized.
Not if you have poor vision. (Ebooks: Adjustible font sizes for EVERYTHING. Not just the large print editions the library can get.)
Not if the roads are covered in ice, or the library itself is for whatever reason closed/hard to get to.
And the audiobooks! Do you have any idea how many people have cars that don't have CD players, or don't know if they have MP3-CD-compatible CD players, or really don't want to try wrangling an 8-CD-book while driving? THERE ARE A LOT, LEMME TELL YOU. But with Libby, all you need is a bluetooth connection between your phone and your car!
And you can even listen to a whole audiobook on your phone while unable to see because eye surgery! (don't even try to ask if that's common. It's way common. I've had multiple calls re: walking people through setting this up for this reason just this year. Actually, even just this summer. Bad year for eyeballs, good year for Libby.)
Extra bonus points: You don't have to worry about returning materials on time, because Libby handles that for you. Which is great if you're traveling. It's also great because you can even check out more stuff while you're physically in completely different states from your library!
Oh and one other thing. Do you have any idea how much shelf space, say, "every single James Patterson book" or "every single Danielle Steel book" would actually take up? How many entire physical book cases those authors would take up, if a library chose to have every. single. book. they've ever written? Yeah. It's not happening. (Okay. The Library of Congress probably has it. Good luck finding any other library doing it.) But we can get them all in ebook format. Yep. Every last one. And the audiobook version. These two and every other insanely prolific writer out there. Virtual space is infinitely expandable. Aren't you glad?
Your library pays some hefty fees to make these ebooks available to you. These are just some of the reasons. So please. Use the feature. We want you to use the feature.
I bet raising your arm and summoning a weapon for you to grasp feels good as fuck
Well those are allllmost done
question. why do you have 7 featureless grey monoliths in your driveway
There's eight actually but the last one is still in the garage
question. why do you have eight featureless grey monoliths
They're actually a really dark purple
question. why do you have seven featureless really dark purple monoliths in your driveway and an eighth in the garage
Some of them do have features though. There's holes and hinges and stuff, so I can put secrets in em
question. why do you have 8 really dark purple occasionally featureful monoliths
The heart wants what the heart wants
this reads like a muppet sketch
see? See!??!
You're not wrong

let's bring back the stop taking videos of strangers without their knowledge discourse because you really must stop doing that
Example art from Tumblr users @poltergrease @teenageclown @randomationality
â¨Star Trek TNG Mikuâ¨
[Video Description by idowhatiwantspock: A tiktok from Paal Bjørndal of a white haired lighthouse worker with a glorious white beard speaking into the camera, as wind blows his hair around. No dialogue is audible over the sound of wind. The video caption reads "Here I tell you some really inspiring quotes. I hope this will help you get up in the morning" End Description]
nothing feels more like giggling and whispering to your friends than being on the jays lb at **** and seeing my mutals presumably also at **** being on the jays lb
I got the chance to road trip out to the path of totality! My phone camera didnât do it justice, so I painted what I saw instead đđ
WOW, thank you for all the love on this!! Iâve gotten a few asks about prints, so let me answer them all at once by saying that prints are now available right here! đâ¨
This is a gallery-quality giclĂŠe art print on 100% cotton rag archival paper, printed with archival inks.
Today is the one year anniversary of this incredible experience!!

Thank you Ken! Very cool.
This also the mood I get into when I hear the name Jeff Bezos.
I like Ken. Him in response to right wing media framing him as being transphobic:
people are confused âunsolicited criticism in fanfics is rudeâ with âfanfics are above criticism.â no one says fanfics are above criticism. what weâre saying is that, unless an author specifically asks for feedback and criticism, unsolicited criticism is rude, because unlike anything else that you pay to consume and therefore can rightfully be criticized, fanfics are free and they are someoneâs hobby. authors are kind enough to share what they write as their hobbies with you for free. you donât have to like these fics. you can click away from a fic you donât like at any point you want. butâagain, unless specifically and directly asked by an authorâitâs rude to tell someone, who is kind enough to allow you free access to their house, their art, that their fics should have been xyz.
so no, fanfics are not above criticism. just like how a gift someone gives you is not above criticism.
but giving fanfics unsolicited criticism is rude. just like how itâs rude to tell someone that you donât like the gift they gives you for free, out of kindness.
