You know whatâs more fun than worldbuilding that makes some fantasy races EEEEVIIIIIIILLLLL!!!!? Worldbuilding that gives the different races cultural differences that help explain why thereâs a lot of conflict between them:
Goblin culture doesnât have a concept of âPropertyâ. A stick on the ground and a tool in a locked shed are equally up for grabs if a thing needs doing. They casually take and leave things all over their communities, eat from communal pots, and genuinely Do Not Understand why the Core Races are so Angry and prone to Violence all the time.
Consequently Goblins who live near Core communities develop a reputation as âThievesâ despite not even having a *word* for that. (The closest word they have is more like âGreedyâ and it means a person that hides things so nobody else can use them, and itâs a surefire fight-starter to call a Goblin that)
Common Orc Spiritual beliefs hold that a Soul can only grow stronger by overcoming Challenges in life, and see intruding on another personâs Challenge unasked for as not just Rude, but Deeply Harmful. Youâre Stealing their chance to Grow. Asking for help is deeply personal and doing so can be both a way to grow closer with them or a too-personal intrusion, depending on your existing relationship with them. An exception is Children, as far as most Orcs are concerned, all Children are fundamentally the responsibility of the Whole Community, regardless of whose child they are, or even if said child is an Orc at *all*.
This means that Orcs who live near Core neighbors often seem Rude and Standoffish if not outright hostile, because they neither ask for nor offer aid even in times of trouble, and respond to unasked for aid themselves with Anger. There are even rumors that they Steal Children, because if an Orc finds a child lost in the woods theyâre pretty much immediately going to start feeding it, and if they canât find where to bring it back to, or it doesnât seem to be well cared for, theyâre just gonna keep it.Â
This. I like this.
Anyone have recommendations for a bread recipe that is not sourdough?
Laura Calder's Miracle Boule - starts with Âź of yeast and rises very slowly, light on kneading; it really does prefer a kitchen around 75Âş, but other than that is not finicky. Â
Oh man that looks really good. Sadly I donât think I have a 14 hour block in which to make it.
Maybe Iâll just make cookies instead.
@thebibliosphere has a bread recipe!!
Hereâs the Tumblr link for anyone looking for it:Â https://thebibliosphere.tumblr.com/post/150472721391/i-was-at-our-local-bakery-recently-and-came-across

How The Discworld Characters Would Cope With Lockdown
from TheTruthShallMakeYeFret/@MakeYeFretPod on Twitter:
But the undisputed king of lockdown is Leonard of Quirm, who hasnât even noticed.
đ
This is most important to remember nowdays!
Doing this may sound fake but honest to fuck, rearranging how I thought to appreciate the small or mundane really did help alleviate the hopeless rut my depression had me in.
I obviously didn't get rid of that motherfucker but! I now want to die a lot less and I smile a lot more.
Iâve realised that what I miss about fantasy is it being truly escapist. I miss it depicting places where I would actually want to go.
Every dang kid I knew waited for their Hogwarts acceptance letter. Reading the books and seeing it on screen gave you this warm, fuzzy feeling and a feeling of longing, even when they were in danger and fighting monsters and evil wizards, you want to be there.
You want to go to Middle Earth, see hobbits and elves and dwarves and run through this land of incredible beauty, mysticism and magic.
You want to be in the TARDIS, seeing the universe.
The more recent trend of fantasy is this gritty, dark realism and places where you would just never want to go. I donât want to go to Westeros. I donât want to be in The Hunger Games, I donât particularly want to be in The Witcher universe. Iâm living in the world of Black Mirror and I hate it.
Fantasy used to say âhey our world kinda sucks but hereâs a cooler oneâ, but now it says âhey our world kinda sucks, but hereâs an even worse one.â
That isnât to say that the above are bad. Theyâre not.Â
But I miss beautiful, escapist fantasy that gives me a break. That takes me somewhere magical, somewhere otherworldly and gives me messages of hope and optimism in the face of darkness. I really, really miss that.
As a great man once said, âFantasy is escapist, and that is its gloryâ. If I want to live in a world full of injustice and suffering, I can just watch the news.
Same fam tbh.
âI have claimed that Escape is one of the main functions of fairy-stories, and since I do not disapprove of them, it is plain that I do not accept the tone of scorn or pity with which âEscapeâ is now so often used. Why should a man be scorned if, finding himself in prison, he tries to get out and go home? Or if he cannot do so, he thinks and talks about other topics than jailers and prison-walls? The world outside has not become less real because the prisoner cannot see itâ
J.R.R. Tolkien
â[M]y friend Professor Tolkien asked me the very simple question, âWhat class of men would you expect to be most preoccupied with, and most hostile to, the idea of escape?â and gave the obvious answer: jailers.â
Quoted by C. S. Lewis. "On Science Fiction"
Just because itâs âescapismâ doesnât mean youâre not running to something.

The greatest act of faith some days is to simply get up and face another day.
Biggest fucking mood.
Theyâre also meant for hiltops, not small rooms. Cant get the right reverb with all that echo.
theyâre also meant to make you fight the english. donât forget that part.
My fav bagpipe player was a dude who would go out to the middle of a soccer field near my college apartment on Sunday. No one was using the field and heâd just be out there playing his heart out and the sound were just spread out over the plains. Iâd be working on art for class so Iâd open the window and listen. I still have fond memories of the day a kid biked up to the edge of the field, ran over to the bagpiper and the music stopped for a moment and as they talked. I couldnât hear it but I had assumed the worst, that someone had decided to tell him to stop playing. Instead after the pause the musician seemed to nod, readjusted his bagpipes and started belting out the Star Wars theme.Â
Holyshit that is the most interesting thing Iâve heard in awhile
Holy shit yes
that absolutely made me want to Fight the English
Do you like poetry? If so what are some of your favorite poems? (P. S. You're a lovely person I hope you're doing okay)
Yeah! I write poetry and I have a #poetry tag where I share my original stuff, but most of itâs old :^) !
Among my favorites are:
for women who are âdifficultâ to love - Warsan Shire
wild geese -Mary Oliver
the lake isle of Innisfree - W.B. Yeats
on turning ten - Billy Collins
I think the âwomen are mysteriousâ thing can also come from:
1) Women actually being quite clear, but not telling men what they want to hear. Â âShe said she doesnât want to talk to me? Â So many mixed messages and confusing signals!â
2) Women not having cheat codes. Â âI tried being nice, and she didnât have sex with me. Â I tried being an asshole, and she didnât have sex with me. Â Come on, thereâs got to be some kind of solution to this puzzle!â
3) Women not being a hive mind. Â âFirst a woman told me that she likes guys with big muscles. Â Then the very next day a woman told me she thinks muscles arenât attractive at all. Â Make up your mind, women!â
4) An individual woman doing something confusing, and instead of asking âwhy is she doing this now?â men ask âwhy do women always do this?â
Always reblog

âvillain attempts to go back in time to kill superman as a small child, gets shot in the face by ma kent, who buries him behind the barn with the othersâ would probably have niche appeal as a comic but i donât care, i want it
The first time a man from the future showed up at Martha Kentâs house, Clark Kent was two years old.
According to his birth certificate, anyway. She just kind of accepted that the details were a little fudged. Relativity, and all.
Maybe the stranger would have succeeded in whatever it was he wanted to do, except that he really did just show up. Appeared, like a ghost made flesh, right in the backyard. Clark, thank goodness, was out in the fields with Jonathan. He couldnât bear to be alone, that boy, and they could never bear to leave him.
Which left Martha free to shoot the ghostly intruder in the face.
Martha had not always considered herself a shoot first, ask questions later sort of a person. But that was before she found a baby in a spaceship where her corn was supposed to be.
Theyâd switch off, Jonathan and her, who got Clark and who got the shotgun. Martha got the shotgun more often than not. Guns made her husband uncomfortable. She was hardly a fan, but sheâd always been a terrible pacifist. Too determined to defend herself.
The sight of all that blood and brain and bone was still nauseating. She compartmentalized, told herself it was no different from slaughtering a cow; didnât think about riot gear or tear gas or the friends sheâd lost or all the things sheâd moved away from when her heart couldnât take it any longer. This was different. This was her son.
She prodded the corpse with her foot. It remained a corpse. A real nasty looking corpse, all big and burly and holding a gun much too large. She didnât like making assumptions based on appearances, but she didnât imagine heâd been coming for anything nice. She bent down to search his pockets, found a metal wallet and flipped it open.
Born 2018.
Well, hell. Wasnât that just a kick in the pants?
Probably she ought to have been a bit more unsettled than she was. But sheâd been waiting two years for someone to show up on her doorstep, men in black or UFOs or something. Hell, sheâd half expected her sweet little boy to hatch into something worse.
Just because she brought home space babies didnât mean she was a damn fool.
Jonathan had rejoined her in long strides, was holding Clark in such a way that he couldnât see the corpse on the ground. âWell, shit,â he said.
âEyup,â Martha agreed.
âDonât look government.â
âNope.â
âWe burying him?â
âIâll bury him,â Martha said, standing up. âYou get Clark inside and read him a book or something. I donât want him seeing any of this, getting him messed up in the head.â
âYou sure? Looks heavy.â
âThatâs why we have a wheelbarrow. Iâll stick him out behind the barn, might as well keep all our secrets in one place.â
Martha had a long time to think as she dug a time travelerâs grave. There were a lot of reasons someone might travel back in time trying to kill her kid. The first was her instinct as a mother, which was: he was a fucking asshole. Who killed a kid? Fucking assholes, that was who.
Now, it was also possible that her sweet little boy grew up to be some kind of space Hitler. She didnât think sheâd raise that kind of a kid, but she didnât suppose there was any parent who set out to raise a Hitler.
Still didnât sit right with her. She didnât much like the idea of killing baby Hitler, either.

The BookCon panel For Fans, By Fans: Fanfiction Addiction can best be summed up by the moment when Riot Baby author Tochi Onyebuchi mentioned a Superman fanfic about Martha Kent shooting every time traveler who tries to kill baby Clarkâand then an audience member piped up with the name of the fic, and suddenly all the attendees were distracted bookmarking Empty Graves by Unpretty to read after they were finished gushing about fanfiction.

Legitimately this is one of the best short stories Iâve ever read.
âYou are loved just for being who you are, just for existing. You donât have to do anything to earn it. Your shortcomings, your lack of self-esteem, physical perfection, or social and economic success - none of that matters. No one can take this love away from you, and it will always be here.â
