Chanpuruu Chat: a mixture of things

Haitai! Wannee shikee nu Uchinaanchu. I am an Okinawamerican - a global Uchinaanchu with deep respect/love/roots of indigenous resilience and high hopes for our collective liberation! I was born in Uchinaa (the Ryukyu islands which you may know today as Okinawa), raised mostly in the southern US, and am currently living/loving/learning in O'ahu. Introverted but always eager to talk story & build community with fellow Uchinaanchu / Shimanchu, activARTists, QTIPoCs, abolitionists, indigenous struggles, protectors & children of the islands. WHAT DOES "KATAIBUSAIBIIN" MEAN? This is Uchinaaguchi - an indigenous language of Ryukyu/ Okinawa. "Katain" is a verb which can mean to literally talk or narrate but has the connotation "to communicate" and the suffix "-busaibiin" is a verb conjugation which means "want to." So, to say "kataibusaibiin" means I want to not only speak but to make a connection. It is of great significance to say this in one of our indigenous Ryukyuan languages. To make a long story short, the Ryukyu Kingdom and indigenous peoples of the Ryukyuan islands were invaded and forced to become an internal colony of Japan, what is now known as Okinawa Prefecture. Subsequently, the Japanese government shamed and coerced Ryukyuans to stop speaking our indigenous languages, give up our rich culture, and instead adopt Japanese language and culture. This struggle to resist erasure - to reclaim our languages, culture, and right to self-determination - is one that continues to this day... Chanpuuru yaibiin! Like one of my favorite foods, gooya-chanpuuru, I am a mixture of things. So too is this blog. I often share from my vantage point at the intersection (collision?) of identities and how that has shaped me and my current path as perpetual student. I love hearing other people's stories too. I hope by our sharing and relating through our stories, we can build relationships and a stronger foundation to build a brighter future together. Yutasarugutu unigeesabira! I look forward to/wish good things in this time together!
