Wei Wuxian familiarizes himself with the rules the moment he gets to Cloud Recesses and follows them as best as he can. All three thousand of them. He has to, for only by letting everyone see the Yiling Laozu as a docile spouse can he buy the safety of the Wens.
Wei Wuxian is as quiet as he can manage.
He doesn’t fight.
He makes sure to be in bed at hai-shi and rises at mao-shi.
He sits straight. Speaks only when spoken to. Doesn’t complain about the bland food.
Wei Wuxian… manages. However, if he had been under any illusions before, the first days in the Cloud Recesses make him painfully aware of the fact that it is only a matter of time. Sooner or later, he will break one of the rules, whether by forgetting the rules or forgetting himself. And he is certain that people are watching and waiting for him to slip up. There are critical eyes on him constantly. It feels stifling, but there is nothing he can do apart from try fit in even harder. Every day that he manages, is a day he buys for the Wens. A day that they each can work on building a stable life here, so that when Wei Wuxian inevitably falls, he won’t drag them with him.
The one positive discovery is that the stranger he is now married to seems to be content with ignoring him whenever possible. Apparently, Lan Wangi has about as much interest in a husband as Wei Wuxian himself. That alone is a big relief. Wei Wuxian was prepared for the worst, for having to bend not just in daylight, but in the dark as well. And he told himself before: it would have been worth it, to keep his people safe. Still, he is grateful that this—at least—he is spared.
Since the day of their wedding, Wei Wuxian has seen very little of Lan Wangji. He has glimpsed him during meals and they have passed each other in the halls a few times.
