The script for Canglanjue was originally offered to Yang Zi, who was the director's first choice to play Xiaolanhua. But Yang Zi wanted to break free from being typecast in xianxia roles and directly rejected the script. Esther Yu was one of the backup options, and the director took a gamble when they cast her as the main lead because back then, she was only famous for her high-pitched voice and was debuting as an idol with minimal acting training. But in the end, Esther smashed it out of the park quite unexpectedly with her Xiaolanhua.

Last but not least, we also had Dylan, who was at that time suffering from the massively bad PR from his last show, 'Miss the Dragon' (this trivia is probably more well-known). No one believed that he could act after that (plus the character design in MTD was widely regarded as unappealing and generally bad), so once again, the director and screenwriters took another gamble to cast him to play Dongfang Qingcang, and in the end, he also did not let them down.

tl;dr: I'm amused by how the three main leads of LBFAD were all 'leftovers' in the way that they were not the 'ideal' cast and haphazardly patched in, but it was also largely because of these three that LBFAD became so viral and popular XD
