Jonathan sat on the floor. He’d usually be in the library but that was getting plain and Dracula was getting..a bit lazy with his efforts to keep Jonathan in only certain parts of Castle Dracula.

How would a child know how to do such things? What a fool! Jonathan was quite the smart little boy. Bat. Whatever.

He wasn’t actually playing in that random hallway anyways; it was all just a ploy. A facade. A distraction. Make the Count think he was innocently playing, no interest in exploring the castle, just wanting a change of scenery to play pretend. Jonathan stopped moving his toy boat, looking around–nobody around–then got up and snuck off. He wandered down seemingly endless halls, walls made of an old wallpaper but at least made pretty with a nice red wallpaper in the part of the castle he was in. Torches sat in their holders, evenly spaced, perfectly across each other, lighting the hallway up. Flickering created flashes of shadows, keeping Jonathan on his toes in case the Count wanted to use these flickers to sneak up on the boy.

He stopped in front of doors, leaning his head close to them, ear first, to try and listen in. Nothing. Of course not, there was nobody but him and the Count here. Maybe some of those delivery men–whatever they were–but probably not since the Count's coffin was just fine. He continued, not finding much luck behind any door. Even so, what laid behind these doors? What could the Count possibly have? Did he like music? Science? He knew he liked cooking–the thought of the Count's meals made his tummy rumble. God, who taught that creature how to cook? Some god of culinary perfection?

He needed those recipes. Back to the super sneaky cool mysterious spy mission!

He approached a door and finally heard a voice. Not the Counts, either! How lucky! He grabbed the handle, taking a deep breath–in through the nose, out through the mouth, taking it's time–before pulling on the door, shockingly opening it. He opened it a bit and peeked inside. His eyes met Count Dracula's as the Count looked back. His eyes then met that of multiple wolves. He froze and started crying, pointing at the wolves.

Listen, bad memories, okay? They were scary. Red jaws, champing teeth, blunt-clawed feet, long and sinewy limbs, shaggy hair...nightmare fuel, even for a brave boy like him.

Footsteps quickly approached as Dracula scooped him up. “Oh, liliac mic!” He cooed, bouncing the boy in his arms. “What's gotten you so upset, hm?” He gently pushed the boy's head onto his shoulder. Jonathan pointed at the wolves, through tears. “Those dogs!” He cried out.

Dracula walked over to the wolves, kneeling. “These are not dogs, my boy; these are wolves. Do not fret, they do not bite! Allow them to sniff you as I do to you, I assure you, you will only find kindness and curiosity!”

He took Jonathan's shaky and resistant hand, making him outstretch his arms, allowing the wolves to approach and curiously sniff all over Jonathan, even leaving a few slobbery kisses. Dracula continued to rock the boy, “See? Nothing to be frightened of. They merely want to be your friend.” He looked to Jonathan's now small face, still tear–streaked and bottom lip trembling. He looked at the wolves who looked up at him with big, dark, wet eyes.

Were these the same wolves who growled at the carriage? The same wolves that growled when Dracula used them to keep Jonathan from leaving that night? They were so adorable! They looked positively fake–as if they were life–sized stuffed animals, made to be cuddled with and to bring comfort!

Dracula settled Jonathan on the floor, seated, sticking to the boy to keep him stable and feeling safe. The wolves continued sniffing and licking the boy as Dracula settled a large, pale, clawed hand on Jonathan's bag, gently rubbing it. “See? Nothing to be scared of.” The Count hummed. Jonathan wiped his eyes, sniffling and mumbling something unintelligible under his breath.

Jonathan suddenly reached out and settled a small hand on a wolfs head, patting it. The wolf's tail wagged. The other wolves practically swarmed Jonathan even more, desperate for pats like that wolf. Jonathan giggled, doing his best to settle multiple pats on multiple fluffy heads as Dracula watched with a smile on his face.
