HAPPY "THIS MAN BELONGS TO ME" DAY TO EVERYONE WHO CELEBRATES
"Coppola's Dracula is PEAK psychosexual vampirism" and is the psychosexual part in the room with us right now
It's hetero-sexual and hetero-gazey, but it's by no means anything different in eroticism than Fifty Shades of Gray and just as toothless; if you want something actually bloody and psychosexual read the first four chapters and chapters 18-22 of Dracula, watch Nosferatu (2024), Interview With The Vampire, or Hannibal, despite it having cannibalism instead.
In the movie, Dracula just randomly targets Lucy who he has no personal connection with just to get back at Mina, and the second it's revealed what he did to Lucy, Mina and he just go back to making out anyway because we need to have our cake (Lucy dead) and eat it too (Mina being too much into being the 4th bride of an aristo from 500 years ago to care about her best friend because women are disposable and shallow). There is no transgression beyond an affair. Hallmark movies have more than that.
There is drawn out psychologcal terror and vampiric infatuation and mind games of cat and mouse that make something "psychosexual" in the source material to play with, but it's actually between Dracula and Jonathan and Renfield and we can't have that.
One thing about modern shipnames is that applying them to older fandoms feels sacrilegious.
Like you just know if SPN was made today people would be calling Destiel Angelhunter instead. You just know if BBC Merlin came out today the ships would be Magicprince and Witchmaiden. You just know that if Dracula was a book written nowadays people would be calling it Vampestate instead of Harkula. Spirk? No, if it came out today people would be calling it Captainvulcan or something.
It feels blasphemous to even write these down, and I think that's really fucking funny. Like it just feels inherently wrong.
“How dare you touch him, any of you? How dare you cast eyes on him when I had forbidden it? Back, I tell you all! This man belong to me! Beware how you meddle with him, or you’ll have to deal with me.”
I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DRACULA. I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE.
