The Art of Hiroshi Yoshida
Hiroshi YoshidaΒ was a 20th-century Japanese painter and woodblock printmaker. He is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the shin-hanga style, and is noted especially for his excellent landscape prints. Yoshida travelled widely, and was particularly known for his images of non-Japanese subjects done in traditional Japanese woodblock style.

I think this is the best scientist photograph I have ever seen.
But people didnβt believe him on reddit. So Watterson made the photo sequence into a gif.
Hereβs the gif for anyone curious.
I had to go through the notes to find the gif. Not because I didnβt believe him but because I wanted to see it.
honestly even the highest concept sci-fi seems tame once you learn BioSteelβ’ Goats exist irl
What the fuck are you talking about
you know. the spider goats. the goats spliced with spider genes.
they shoot bulletproof webbing out of their udders!
ok ok that last partβs not technically true, but the truth is still pretty nifty:
yes these goats really exist! in most ways they are normal goats, except for how they secrete spider silk in their milk
(or rather, they secrete a special protein in their milk, which is then extracted and woven into silk fibers)
their DNA contains transplanted genes taken from the Golden Orb Weaver Spider, whose silk is incredibly strongβbut canβt be naturally produced in large quantities. becauseβ¦spiders are tiny yaβll.
these superpowered web-slinging spidergoats genetically modified but otherwise normal and healthy goats can produce much larger amounts of this material (marketed as BioSteel), which is stronger than steel and more bulletproof than kevlar. plus itβs lightweight, elastic, and bio-compatible (compatible with living tissue), meaning it has a ton of potential industrial and medical applications.
(imagine 40 years from now you need knee surgery, and your doctor sits you down and explains that your shiny new anterior cruciate ligamentΒ was actually artificially woven out of SPIDER GOAT MILK SILK. also in this magical hypothetical future we have universal healthcare. and the wealth of all billionaires has been globally redistributed. this is my hypothetical scenario, i do what i want.)
like i said. pretty nifty!
and here is a photo of one such genetically modified BioSteelβ’ Goat, her name is Freckles
ko-fi

why do so many viruses look like abstract crochet art projects
Because theyβre not really showing the virus, theyβre showing an infected cell
Uh, no these are definitely viruses.
Viruses come in lots of shapes, but they all have a lipid membrane with proteins sticking out of it and some kind of genetic material inside.
The reason they look like yarn is twofold:
Living things are mostly made up of long chains of chemicals (proteins, RNA, DNA, carbohydrates etc). Theyβre basically strings that fold up into the right shape to do their jobs! Modelling software does tend to make this look like yarn and itβs very cool-looking.
These are computer models (and one made with a foam ball and pipe cleaners) where the person who made them highlighted each different component with a different colour. Viruses are too small to reflect any light in wavelengths we can see, so they donβt actually have any colour at all.
We can see them with an electron microscope, though! Here is a picture of lots of virions (individual viruses) of the 2009 H1N1 flu from Wikipedia:
The ones that look like hollow circles have been βsliced throughβ by the focal plane and their contents havenβt taken the stain so they look empty. The outline of the circle is the lipid membrane!
For the other ones, the dark blobs βinsideβ them are proteins in the membrane of the virus. The virions are slightly out of the plane of focus so we see the stuff on the outside of them.
You can see a halo of these proteins around all of the virions!
How cool that we can actually see real viruses!
youβre telling me germs are βinvisibleβ not just bc theyβre too tiny to see, but bc theyβre TOO TINY TO REFLECT VISIBLE LIGHT WAVES holy frick
maybe you should go and reread name of the wind then you'll feel better
mummies? genus of the zombie family. the two are not taxonomically exclusive groups, educate yourself
Also skeletons by that logic.
A lot of people make this mistake actually! βSkeletonβ can refer to any individual member of the family Zombie that has shed its fleshy exoskeleton. Itβs just an unlife cycle stage, but because of its distinct appearance we refer to it by a separate common name (similar to how a βblack pantherβ is just a colour variant of leopards and jaguars, not a separate species).
Okay, so I think this is a point of confusion.
The term βzombieβ is both a technical term, referring to a family, and a common name, referring to a genus.
The family Zombie is a broad, overarching group that includes the genus that many people call zombie (Ghoulus, not to be confused with Ghouli, the unrelated genus of the Ghala family which also includes bogeymen and some ghosts*) as well as the Mummy genus (Pyrima), the spore-zombie genus (Fungan) and a few others.
The colloquial term βZombieβ is the common term for the genus Ghoulus, which is in the family Zombie and includes Ghoulus romero (the walking zombie), Ghoulus snydera (the running zombie), and Ghoulus smithi (the vampiric zombie, also called the legendary zombie).
Interestingly, there are several things called βzombiesβ that are neither Ghoulus nor Zombie, including the dancing zombie (Jacksoni thrillera), which is more closely related to (although not currently actually in the same family as) clowns.
*Note: the ghosts in the Ghala family are not true ghosts. True ghosts are in the order Spectere, which is entirely unrelated to Ghouli, Ghoulus, Pyrima, and Fungan. Ghala βghostsβ are given the common name ghost because of their superficial similarity to true ghosts.
Important note: sometimes youβll see people claiming that zombies are domesticated! They are not! Some zombies can be tamed (like Ghoulus romero), but zombies are wild animals and might hurt you if you approach them! Leave them alone and donβt feed them!
are there any domestic ghosts?
this is a great question! hereβs the answer:
the closest to a domesticated ghost we have is the house ghost, Phantome domus (sometimes classified as a distinct subspecies Phantome domus domesticus).
P. domus is interesting because itβs like housecats β they are technically domesticated (scans have shown that the fight-or-flight response, like in domesticated animals, is weaker in P. domus than in related species like P. majestica, the manor ghost, or P. more, the cemetary ghost), but evidence suggests that itβs a naturalistic co-evolution rather than an intentional domestication process like with sheep or dogs.
If a house ghost takes up residence in your home, they are completely safe unless treated in an inhumane way. There is a stereotype of house ghosts that they are dangerous or volatile, but this is usually due to confusion with other species, especially the common poltergeist (Sellaruptor vulgaris) or vengeance spirit (Phantome odium).

the WHAT??
okay, found her

This is everything!!!!!
Ayeeeee, Zoro!!! A fairly quick (maybe 2h) painting of everybodyβs favourite marimo. I didnβt bother to look up references (and have not since) so if you find any mistakes - congratulations!!! You may keep them!!!
I attempted a more semi-realistic style compared to the anime/manga and quite like it. Definitely not super rendered (and if someone could tell me how to stop my brush from wobbling so damn much that would be lovely) but I enjoyed the mix of being lazy and putting in some details.
