Disney is devouring IPs. That’s a fact. They acquire smaller studios, including all original IP from those studios as well as any rights that were sold to them (even when the original creators did so specifically so Disney wouldn’t get their hands on the IP). Doing anything with that IP isn’t a priority, they just want it, because if they don’t own it, someone else does. And that won’t fly when you want to be the only purveyor of entertainment media in the world.

Any bigoted actions are an interplay of that and Disney’s funding priorities. The company doesn’t give a single solitary crap one way or the other. Hell, if LGBTQ+ content was universally accepted, they’d just flood the market with nothing but that. BUT! That’s not the case today. They’re peddling to the common market, which is bigoted because society is bigoted. Not even in the “Gays is bad” way, but simply “I don’t have anything agaist The Queers, I just don’t know why the have to shove it in my face.”

And you can say “Oh but if the film was so close to finished they could have just funded it the rest of the way!” But that’s not the point. The point is, they want that IP to sit on, like a dragon on its treasure hoard. They want to have it available should they decide 10 years from now that it’ll make all of the money. They want to prevent anyone else from making that money in the meantime. They want the positive press if 3 years from now they do decide to finish it, in a cynical bid to overshadow some new leak of abuse within the company.

Mainly because I realized several years ago that Dark and Gritty, along with their cousin Grimdark, are used by nerds and critics to describe any story that tries to add psychological depth to traditionally one-dimensional characters* and realistically depict how they would function in the world.

And I’m sorry, but three-dimensional characters with actual emotions, and fears, and passions, and flaws are just more interesting and relatable because they feel like actual people.

IDK what I’d call it instead, but it really shouldn’t have made it out to be a grudge match. The title does show the chasm between what WB wanted and what Snyder was trying to do though.

This is the same movie where:

Joss Whedon oversexualised Wonder Woman by adding in gratuitous butt shots (which Snyder removed) and had The Flash fall on Wonder Woman’s cleavage, a joke stolen from his previous movie; Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Gadot reportedly refused to shoot that scene and so her stunt double was used.

Whedon also reportedly threatened Gadot’s career and locked her in a room.

The majority of POC characters were erased from the movie such as: Elinor Stone (Karen Bryson) Ryan Choi (Kai Zheng), Iris West (Kiersey Clemons) etc.

Executives Toby Emmerich, Geoff Johns and Jon Beg held racist conversations that led to the cutting of said POC characters.

Cyborg’s emotional back story and character arc, was thrown completely out of the window.

Ray Fisher was told that “we can’t an angry Black man at the center of the movie” by a literal room full of studio executives.

 The head of DC Films called Ray Fisher and told him not to throw Geoff Johns under the bus, thus attempting to derail the investigation.

Cyborg’s origins were reshot (despite being shown in Batman v Superman) to highlight the existence of his penis.

In the fallout of the movie and Ray Fisher’s accusations, he has subsequently been fired by WB from the upcoming Flash movie. (A movie where there was never a script without Cyborg.)

The movie was reshot, re-edited and re-hauled massively from Zack Snyder’s original vision whilst the man was in mourning for his daughter who had died that year.

Deborah Snyder and Christopher Nolan, upon seeing this version made a vow that Zack could never see it as “it would break his heart.”

Before the movie was released, Deborah had to report an incident involving Whedon to studio executives.

WB’s continual gaslighting of both Ray Fisher (which still continues at the time of writing) and of the fans by painting them solely as toxic, whilst ignoring the $500,000 raised for AFSP and the toxic environment they helped to create on the set of Justice League (2017); cannot be understated. The attitude taken by the studio, to protect and enable abusers is completely and utterly abhorrent and should not be tolerated.

Even after Zack was granted the rights to release his version of Justice League, WB simply wanted to release the movie in it’s unfinished format and told Zack that he could not use the original ending scene of Bruce Wayne meeting John Stewart (a scene Snyder filmed part of in 2016 and the rest in October 2020). Because of this, Snyder almost walked from the movie as he didn’t “want to take a person of colour out of this movie.”

At the end of the day, Zack Snyder’s Justice League isn’t just a victory for the fans who campaigned long and hard over the last three years but, in the words of Ray Fisher, it’s “ a righting of so many wrongs,”.

Like they really cut out Martian Manhunter, Iris West, Ryan Choi, John Stewart, and destroyed Victor Stone's character along with his parents Dr. Sharon and Silas Stone all in ONE goddamn movie.

Because why? Like what's the reason? Are they really so racist? Like it's not just ZSJL either, from what I heard they cut out and reduced several characters of color in the Godzilla vs. Kong movie too. (And I'm sorry, but if you're going to make a Godzilla movie your stars should be at least be Asian if not Japanese like I'm done pretending its okay for America to take Godzilla and whitewash it). Like who are they doing this for? Haven't recent times proven that POC can lead movies and make tons of money? I just don't understand why they keep doing this stuff

It's also not lost on me that Zack Snyder used his position as the architect of the DCEU to include and cast as many POC as the studio would let him get away with. I mean how many years did it take for the MCU to do anything besides make movies starring mediocre white men? But Zack tried to put three black superheroes in one movie probably with the hopes that all of them would eventually get their own solo films as well as what would have been the first East Asian superhero and, as we know now, he was actively pitching a solo movie for, and who could forget Jason Momoa as Aquaman the first Pacific Islander superhero? Think of what the DCEU could have been if they let Zack do Justice League his way the first time around. We could have had a John Stewart Green Lantern movie, a Ryan Choi Atom movie, a Harry Lennox Martian Manhunter movie, and in fact tomorrow April 2, 2021 would have been the release of the Cyborg solo film. WB could have been breaking superhero barriers by having the most diverse lineup imaginable, but they decided they'd rather be the MCU.
