Not sure if I can express this in the way I really mean, but I wondered today if it’s so easy to get sucked into hating on things online (meaning, like, making fun of celebs on social media, not capital-H bigotry-style Hate) is because people really INITIALLY would like to consume content about things they like, but literally EVERYWHERE on the Internet you would go to do so you will find people being negative about those things. Like, other fans! Whether Reddit, Tumblr, Facebook, forums...you’ll go there to gush about the thing you like and half the people are like “I’m a fan of this, but X sucks and they should change Y and also add Z” and it’s incredibly draining. So why not just participate in scenes where hating and negativity at least somewhat make you feel good?

I noticed this in myself in the forums that I’ve participated in since I was in college. It used to be that I read threads about things I liked, like clothing, gaming, tv shows. But eventually those threads just became places for people to bitch about the topic, and complain anytime something new happened in the space. So I check up on those threads less and less, and now more so read threads about people being stupid on social media or companies’ terrible marketing campaigns. These things are posted specifically for the purpose of ridicule, so joining in on the negativity is at least the intended purpose of these threads, and makes you feel good.
