Then the confrontation happens in 5x09, and if I remember right, Stiles uses similar language, again emphasizing that he did what he had to do. But Scott now has Theo’s version of events in mind, which might further emphasize the parallels to him with what Kira nearly did, and that Stiles was equally out of control.

so if I tell someone their house is haunted they might believe it because it explains what they consider weird and thus puts their mind at ease - or because it makes their house and therefore them special in some way

by that scene scott is primed to see the worst in stiles, after Void stabs him Scott sees a capacity for violence in Stiles [now Void isn't stiles, they just look the same], he is waiting for the other shoe to drop to show Stiles [who talks a big game because threats are all he has] has become something awful just by proximity to the supernatural

Scott sees the supernatural as a corrupting force - something that takes good people and makes them monsters

this doesn't hold up in canon btw, monster is a thing you DO in teen wolf, not a thing you ARE - that is not true of what scott BELIEVES

Scott's bite and transformation was traumatic, and compounding that was the responsibility that he partly took on himself [the boyd and erica thing] and then was dumped on him [the alpha thing] messes him up for all his bravado

so he sees the supernatural as something that turns all it touches into ravening monsters - that it makes them violent and uncontrollable and he saw that with Void-in-Stiles and he never stops looking at Stiles like he might at any moment become Void again

so Void would have smashed Donovan's head in with a wrench and that is what Scott has prepared himself to hear, that when Stiles killed Donovan it would be as violent as what Void did to him

that doesn't make it right though, Scott's fear is understandable but means he trusts Void more than Stiles, he believes Theo because he was waiting for someone [he admits it was malia he was waiting on] killing someone and when he heard it was stiles instead of expecting an accident or something - he heard void is back, or it was never void, it was always stiles

and stiles waited for that revelation - he waited for scott to push him away for it so he never corrected him

but your claim that scott views all supernaturals as “monsters” is not something i agree with.

i feel like the show did an amazing job at showing scott’s arc as he comes to terms with being a werewolf, and starts to see his powers not as a curse but as a means to help others.

in fact, scott literally says that werewolves are not monsters, not just once but on two separate occasions.

both of these scenes, but especially the one in 4x04, are very significant points in his development. because they show how his mindset has changed since the first season, when he did in fact view the supernatural as a very negative thing (understandably, given his experiences).

scott: liam, it’s okay...

liam: [sobbing] they can’t see me like this. like... like...

scott: [softly] like a monster?

scott: [firmly] you’re not a monster. you’re a werewolf, like me.

there are multiple factors affecting scott’s mindset in 5x09, including the stress he’s already under and, yes, his trauma related to void stiles.

but i don’t think it was a case of scott waiting for stiles to do something violent, and expecting the worst of him.

i think scott had so much love for stiles that following the events of s3b, he pushed all the trauma he’d endured to the back of his mind, because he had his best friend back and that’s all he could see.

he went along with his life as though nothing had happened and he trusted stiles completely.

so then when theo comes along and tells him something shocking, something to which his initial reaction is “that’s not possible”, he opens up all these memories of void stiles and it brings it all back.

and then he’s stood in the rain, outside the animal clinic, and it’s almost an exact replica of the scene in 3x19.

but you seem to be saying that scott’s view of stiles was tainted ever since his possession, and i don’t see that as being the case.

his love for stiles is no weaker than it previously was, he still views stiles as his best friend, as his brother.

there’s a lot going on it that scene, and above all it was stiles’ accidental confirmation of events that convinced scott of what he’d been told, and not any prejudice against his best friend. his trauma from the violence inflicted against him by the nogitsune was there, but it wasn’t what turned him against stiles (not that he really turned against stiles anyway, they had a fight but ultimately scott didn’t actually do anything to cut off their friendship or even call for a break between them).

what i will say is that i definitely agree with you that that’s what stiles was thinking.

after the things he did while possessed, he’s scared that it’s proof he’s a bad person because he enjoyed it and it made him feel powerful. and then he kills donovan and admits to feeling good about it in the moment.

there’s actually a really good meta about how stiles (and other members of the pack) have a flawed vision of scott here

so stiles sees scott has a perfect person, and himself as a terrible, flawed person, and he’s scared that scott will see that and won’t want to be his friend.

which is why he doesn’t really question it when scott is seemingly condemning him for killing in self-defense, because he’s convinced that what he did was terrible and it’s only a matter of time before scott turns away from him.

sheriff: did you think that i wouldn’t believe it was self-defense?

stiles: what if it wasn’t? what if i told you i wanted him dead?

One of my favourite things about Scott and Allison’s relationship is that their attraction for each other doesn’t have to do with Scott’s new werewolf abilities at all. While they’d already interacted in passing with the pen exchange, and then Allison sees him on the lacrosse field, neither of those actually lead to anything—no phone numbers, no invitations, not even a ‘see you later.’ Instead, it’s this moment at the vet’s office—a chance, human encounter—that leads to the two of them clicking.

Posey’s acting does a phenomenal job of communicating Scott’s despair in 5A, but I really love the almost childlike uncertainty he brings to the table in this scene from Status Asthmaticus.

Hayden’s dying, he’s fallen out with Stiles, Malia’s in the wind and Kira’s been gone for days, and he’s just seen the first glimpse of havoc the Beast is about to unleash, thanks to the busted school sign taking up half a halfway. And then Lydia texts him—a spot of hope!—so he goes to the library and can’t find her but when he calls her, he hears the phone.

But there’s no Lydia.

He’s already uncertain—there’s been a lot of steeling breaths and half-glazed eyes, and the almost dissociative way he spoke with Theo at the beginning of the episode—but there’s just something about the acting choice of holding the phone with both hands here that feels so small. Like a child clutching to a favourite animal in the dark, or a drowning man to a single piece of driftwood. He knows it isn’t going to help, not in any way that matters, but it’s literally all he has left to hold on to. 

I mean, many things were happening to his body without his consent, the biggest being turning into a werewolf, obviously.

The External Enemy

Ostensibly, the thing that Scott is fighting in the final act of the series is the Anuk-ite. It’s a creature whose main weapon is fear—it both creates fear in its enemies, and weaponizes people’s pre-existing fears against them.

As a result, his final confrontation with the Anuk-ite in The Wolves of War (6x20) provides an excellent opportunity to both conclude the plot of the season, and provide a resolution Scott’s character arc, and the suicidal ideation he has struggled with since the start of the series.

For @teenwolf-meta week day seven : parallels

Though at first glance, Scott and Hayden may seem like they nothing have in common except for maybe Hayden being Scott’s beta and their relationship with Liam but there’s more to them than what meets the eye.

Their backstories have a lot in common (even if the show was not interested in exploring much about it). They both had a chronic condition that they had for a major part of their life; Scott with his asthma and Hayden had a kidney transplant somewhere between sixth and tenth grade (if one were to follow the show’s timeline.) It is interesting to note that their conditions imposed on them physical and mental strain as well as economical strain since Scott’s mother is only a nurse and Hayden’s only guardian is her sister who is a deputy; both of these professions aren’t highly paid and both of  them express guilt for “burdening” their respective guardians and are highly conscious of their financial conditions and have taken up side-jobs to help with their family’s finances.  

SCOTT : Sorry I’m back so late. I was closing up the Animal Clinic. I got more hours to earn a little extra… money.   MELISSA : How much more did you need?   SCOTT :This is payment from the dead pool. I found it in Garrett’s locker. This belongs to Derek?   MELISSA : So you’re just keeping it safe for him in a gym bag underneath your bed? How long have you had it?    SCOTT :Too long.   MELISSA :You know you have to give it back?    SCOTT :I was going to.    MELISSA : Do I want to know why you haven’t?   SCOTT : Because of you.   MELISSA : Me? (SIGHS) You mean because we’ve been struggling a little?    SCOTT : Mom, we’re struggling a lot

HAYDEN : It’s for a kidney transplant I had a few years ago. I work here so my sister doesn’t have to pay for all of it.

                  -5x06 Required Reading

 These are particularly insightful interactions between Scott and Melissa in 4x11 and Hayden and Liam in 5x06 because in the first interaction we see Scott wanting to keep Derek’s money from the vault because he’s more than aware just how much they’re struggling and feels guilty for it. He works extra hours at the clinic to make extra money and he wants to relieve some of the financial strain from his mother’s shoulders. Similarly, in 5x06, Hayden reveals that she had to undergo a kidney transplant which forced her to take expensive medication. Though, she doesn’t say it exactly, she does feel guilty for burdening her sister and works in Sinema so that she can shoulder her own expenses without being a bother to anyone else. A sentiment of guilt, fear of being burden to someone runs undercurrent in these conversations.

The second parallel is of Scott’s season one arc and Hayden’s season five arc. I’ll use two illustrate four different interactions to elaborate my stance.

STILES: Well, we survived, dude. You know? We outlasted the alpha. It’s still good, right? Being alive? SCOTT: When we were in the chemistry room, he walked right by us. You don’t think that it heard us? You don’t think it knew exactly where we were?   STILES: Well, then how come we’re still alive?   SCOTT: It wants me in its pack. But I think, first - I have to get rid of my old pack.   STILES: What do you mean? What old pack?   SCOTT: Allison. Jackson, Lydia. You.   STILES: The alpha doesn’t wanna kill us.   SCOTT: It wants me to do it.

-1x07 Night School

LIAM : Don’t worry. You learn to control it. 

HAYDEN : I’m not like you. I wasn’t bitten by a wolf. I was…someone’s science experiment.  

-5x07 Strange Frequencies

 Both of these interactions; the first one that takes place during 1x07 and the second one during 5x07 indicate that both Scott and Hayden are aware that they’re pawn in someone else’s games. Scott knows that he’s a just a tool for the alpha to murder people and the alpha wants him to get rid of his pack. In 5x07, Hayden is still getting used to being a chimera and even though she doesn’t know exactly what the Dread Doctors want from her, she’s more than aware that they want something from her and she’s just “a science experiment"  to them.  

STILES: That’s fine. Look, back in the classroom when she was holding your hand, that was different, okay? I don’t think she makes you weak. I - I think she actually gives you control. She’s kind of like an anchor.   SCOTT: You mean because I love her.

-1x06 Heart Monitor    

HAYDEN : Something’s different now. I don’t know why, but ever since coming back, nothing feels the same. Nothing feels right.   LIAM :Nothing?   HAYDEN : Except for you. You’re the only thing that feels the same. The only thing that feels right. 

-5x12 Damnatio Memoriae

 These both interactions show how Allison and Liam helped Scott and Hayden to overcome difficult situations and how important their first loves are to their arc. In 1x06, Stiles points out that Allison is not a weakness for Scott but she rather she is his anchor. His tether to humanity. His love for Allison allows Scott to  cling onto his human side, something integral to the  "semi-freaking normal life"  he desperately seeks. In 5x12, Hayden has just been resurrected, she knows Theo has been planning something sketchy but she can’t leave him since he resurrected her. She can’t confide in her sister, the only  guardian she has, and is irritated at her overprotective behavior. The  only semblance of normality she has is her feelings for Liam. He’s the only thing that allows her to feel like a normal teenage girl who is being with her first love.

Scott is stabbed through the chest by a Chimera seeking his power. A little ways away, the pack mate who’d tried to help him lies incapacitated on the ground. Theo snarls in anticipation.

And then, because this is Creatures of the Night (5x01) and not Status Asthmaticus (5x10), Stiles, Malia, and Liam all rush onto the scene to help.

The second they arrive, Scott rises to his feet and defeats Belasko seemingly single-handed. Just as he once broke the Berserker mask, Scott does the impossible again by throwing the claws off, and then shows pity by setting Belasko free. For all the others know, they weren’t really needed. All that’s left to do is for Stiles to add, “If I were you, I’d run” (5x01).

This scene draws on the previous season, and sets up the rest of 5a. Stiles, Liam, Malia, and Scott all follow a similar trajectory: a false belief in s4 has led to feelings of self-reproach in in s5, which are ultimately connected to the characters’ pedestaling of Scott.
