Immediately after the attack, he felt as though part of his self had been killed in it. He doesn't get why he feels that way. He's alive. He's survived it. Whatever that animal was—if it even was an animal—had bit down on his side hard. Spared him the mercy of being maimed to death. He should be feeling relieved. He had been granted the chance to tell the tale.

His head spins, his body hurts, and all he's feeling is that a part of him is bleeding out along with the blood coming out from the bite wound.

the bite brought upon an type of pain he had never felt before. an intensity that felt like it was coursing through his arteries with such conviction that they could rupture from within. his vision can't seem to focus on anything and neither could his brain.

Scott's first trail ride with Deaton ft. Captain and Sandy

Since Querida was a foal when Scott first got her, he wouldn't be able to ride her until she was four years old. So in the meantime, he learns how to ride by taking lessons from Deaton.

Deaton owned a herd of horses as he ran a riding lesson ranch. His main steed was a grullo Missouri fox trotter gelding named Captain. Sandy is a buckskin quarter horse mare which Scott had mostly learned how to ride on.
