The Tree Who Set Healthy Boundaries : an alternate ending for Shel Silversteinâs The Giving Tree by Topher Payne đŻđłâ¤ď¸

Iâd always hated The Giving Tree as a kid, but I never realized how much I needed this alternate ending until just now.

You know, just in case you wanted to set your queue for the next 6 years
I am a weird nerd who likes esoteric cosplay so hereâs my costume for this year. Iâm the goth accountant from the Windows 98 Excel ad campaign. Happy Halloween and may your levels always be endless.
Wait wait wait
Was that a real ad
That was 1000% a real ad because anything vaguely computer-related in the 90s was fuckinâ bonkers.
Also if youâre new here and doubted that I was a weird computer geek for any reason please see my extremely specific halloween costume that I actually printed out the ad for to carry around with me because I knew no one would get it.
#why does the apple logo have the rainbow flag in it
OH NO
Help, that makes me feel too old.
That Wired Magazine cover was from July 1997, Appleâs logo was a rainbow apple until 1998.
I. I guess it hasnât been a rainbow for about 22 years now so itâs totally fair that people wouldnât know about that.
Itâs just that I had a rainbow apple logo sticker that came with one of my high schoolâs yearbook computers on my car until like 2015.
I deadass thought apple was being associated with gay rights
Nah, computer culture just used to be really, really weird.
It still is, it just used to be too.

Small things that exude Big-Dick Energy:
when a guy drives calmly and safely
when they cook so competently and unself-conscious and focused on making the food
when a man rolls up button-ups to his elbows
when their eyes become softer when looking at you
Being kind
Speaking passionately about pretty much anything
stretching all casual-like
the act of loosening the necktie
It occurs to me that there are people who werenât on this website in 2012 and therefore never saw the magical gif that you can actually hear:
Itâs been over five years and that still impresses the hell out of me.

when i watched good omens, i didnât expect to love tv crowley, and it fuckin blindsided me. all at once, i thought, oh gosh, damn, and fuck, roughly in that order, and hereâs why.
where tv crowley and book crowley most significantly diverge is the bookshop fire. in the book, âCrowley cursed Aziraphale, and the ineffable plan, and Above, and Below.â in the tv show, instead of cursing him, he calls out for him desperately before falling to the floor with a quiet âyouâve gone.â for book crowley, az is âAziraphale. The Enemy, of course. But an enemy for six thousand years now, which made him a sort of friend.â for tv crowley, aziraphale is his âbest friend.â naturally, in the bookshop fire, tv crowley is in fucking agony. this is not how book crowley reacts.
see, one of book crowleyâs most basic traits is his optimism. âBecause, underneath it all,â the book says, âCrowley was an optimist. If there was one rock-hard certainty that had sustained him through the bad timesâhe thought briefly of the fourteenth centuryâthen it was utter surety that he would come out on top; that the universe would look after him.â
itâs a really beautiful passage. and i canât relate to it at all.Â
after the fire, book crowley thinks he might âget completely and utterly pissed out of his mind while he waited for the world to end.â where book crowley only considers it, tv crowley actually does it. he does go to wait out the end of the world while drunk, and does give up, and he does break down, and he is not an optimist; he is a mess. that struck me. iâve never seen a heroic character so blatantly need help before. but crowley gets help; he finds a friend and confesses how much aziraphale means to him; he gets back in the car and forges onward through the fire, even though heâs clearly Not Okay.
and there, on the flaming m25, book crowley and tv crowley diverge again. tv crowley is not an optimist; heâs not holding the bentley together with the hope that itâll all work out. but he does it anyway. tv crowley doesnât have optimism, but he has something that is, to me, even more important. in the show, âCrowley has something no other demons have, especially not Hastur: an imagination.â
an imagination. strangely enough, in the book, crowley admits to lacking it:Â âTheyâve got what we lack. Theyâve got imagination,â book crowley says. but tv crowley has that imagination, and that is what saves himâand that, to me, makes so much sense.
tv crowley is traumatised. when he fell, some part of him broke, and while he claims he âsauntered vaguely downwards,â he really took a âmillion-light-year freestyle dive into a pool of boiling sulphur,â and it hurt. tv crowley is hurt. and so am i.Â
i also give up. i also break down. i donât, and canât, ever believe that the universe is looking out for meâor for anyone. i am not an optimist. but you know what? i have imagination. i have friends. and if it came down to me to help save the world, that is exactly what i would rely on.
Book Crowley was written by two youngish men at the dawn of the post Cold War era. He is a young man because they were young men. He has optimism because that was the mood at the time. Optimism that decades of MAD was over.
TV Crowley was adapted by a man who is older, and more cynical, and has lost his best friend to Alzheimerâs.
 ^ Yes this.
Book! Crowley was written by young men with the world at their feet, and really, why wouldnât you feel optimistic as your life starts out?
TV! Crowley was written by a man who lost his best friend to Alzheimerâs and no, it wasnât a fire, but this man knew/ knows intimately that you donât just pick yourself up from that straight away. You go and you drink and you mourn andyou grieve and you cry.
And only when thatâs happened and you come to terms with the fact that this man is never going to come back, you shift to accommodate that loss and then you look toward what needs to be happening.
TV! Crowleyâs reaction was so much more realistic for the relationship he and TV! Aziraphale had and it wouldâve been out of character for him to just dust himself off and drive straight to Tadfield, because it would have been like saying those six thousand years meant nothing to him. But they did and so he broke.
Iâve lost someone Iâve loved very suddenly. Iâve had those final conversations, sitting by myself at a lonely table with a ghost. Sometimes there are things left to say, apologies to make. And if I could have said, âWhere are you? Wherever you are, Iâll come to you,â and done one last thing to help themâIâd have done it. Even if it meant holding myself together through an inferno by the force of my imagination, even believing as Crowley did that I would still never see them again. He didnât know Adam would give the angel back. But they had unfinished business, and he was going to finish it, if it was the last thing he did. Which it should have been. He didnât expect a happy ending, he just needed an ending, one that wasnât cut short.
i didnât need my heart today.
Mary Oliver, from âthe fourth sign of the zodiacâ published in Blue Horses
When you think about it Crowley and Aziraphale must have experienced all of those ancient rituals of kinship and affection throughout History. Like. When people kissed and held one another without a second thought. When it was overall easier to express affection between family, friends, or lovers, regardless of gender, to the point that they must be pretty confused--and disheartened--by modern days' general prudishness
Like. Imagine them in 5th century BCE Persia, where men kissing each other on the mouth was a sign of respect, of being equal to one another ; imagine them wordlessly kissing for the first time like that, instead of their usual colder, disrespectful kiss on the cheek ; because they've accepted that they're not enemies anymore, that they're the same in many ways, but they can't articulate that openly, so they seal the knowledge of their growing respect and affection with a kiss of equals
Imagine them in ancient Rome, where kissing was like shaking hands, only with a million little rules and customs ; imagine them practicing the osculum (close-mouthed platonic kiss between acquaintances and friends) for the longest time, until crowley says something infinitely sweet and impossibly good one night after one too many cups of wine, and in his surprised happiness, aziraphale grabs him by the ears and gives him a basium (open-mouthed kiss of strong affection on the lips, sometimes erotic), making crowley promptly fall over his bench and into the Tiber ; they keep saluting one another with a basium from then on, along with affectionate then-platonic kisses on closed eyelids, brows, necks- up until the practice falls out of fashion along with the empire
Imagine them exchanging kisses of peace when the first Christians start greeting one another with them, as the apostles once did ; Crowley vehemently refusing to call them 'holy kisses' in case his mouth spontaneously melts whenever it meets the angel's, and Aziraphale always indulging him, laughing on his lips while they chastely kiss hello and goodbye
Imagine them during the middle ages, when kisses are not so freely-given anymore, having become so much more important in their symbolism ; crowley kissing aziraphale's hand like a vassal or knight does his lord or lady, reverently, fervently, chastely, with all the wordless loyalty he already feels for him, refusing to admit that all the romance of courtly love has gone to his head but being perfectly aware of it nonetheless ; and it's with a kiss on the lips that contracts are signed at this point of History, and so that's how they seal their Arrangement, finally reaching for each other as one for a long-missed embrace that feels too much like a reunion after the sobering Crusades
Imagine them post-renaissance, during the georgian/regency Era even, in Europe where affection and love between men have become heavily guarded and codified : when they feel their bond and affection the most ardently after millenia of learning to know and love each other, but unable to express any of it ; when suspicions of homosexual love is punishable by death in England, so they have to act distant and stiff and pretend they don't remember what it felt like to sit in each other's laps in Persian courts or taste wine through the other's lips during Bacchus feasts. There are hidden places where they could meet, Molly houses and ungentlemanly balls and back gardens, but somehow it seems like the English ways got to Aziraphale, because it doesn't seem proper anymore to say 'please, I'm begging you, come to a place of ill-repute and risk discorporation with me, because in these desperate times, I'm terrified I'll forget how good it felt to kiss you'. Instead, he doesn't say anything, and hides himself in secret clubs, silently waiting for crowley to stop likewise hiding in his century-long sleep.
Imagine them during a summer of love, catching a glimpse of the other among thousands of bodies dancing and singing, being driven together like orbiting moons until they crash into one another, embracing and laughing and yes, kissing in relief, two mouths who have been parted for far too many centuries, holding each other, rocking into each other's arms while the music plays on, aziraphale laughing against crowley's beatifically smiling lips that he never knew how much he had missed the Adamites before this moment ; the both of them not knowing of the riots coming soon in Stonewall, but wordlessly, desperately hoping, hoping, hoping.
Imagine them now, a lifetime later, finally learning all over again what the other feels like, now free to express the love they've been feeling for ever, with kisses, with touches, with words ; not just because humanity is finally starting to get over itself, but because heaven and hell are as well ; there are no more self-imposed inane rules, no more weight on their shoulders, and they know they can't--won't be judged ; neither on this plane nor the next. And they can learn how to kiss, like it's that first time in Persia, all over again.
