i am gonna be so for real right now, that dude who "created god of war" insisting gow: laufey is going to fail commercially and all of that shit just makes me want to succeed through sheer force of will. i will become a god of war stan. i will play all the games so no dudebros can accuse me of not knowing what i'm talking about. i will learn the lore. not even the most obscure fact is safe from me. i will draw fanart. i will write kratos x laufey prequel fic.
nothing motivates me more than a doughy old white man telling people to hate something

POPPY’S ANGEL/THE PLAYTIME BUTCHER/THE EMPLOYEE/THE PLAYER
WHO ARE WE?
SPOILERS FOR POPPY PLAYTIME CHAPTER 5/CHAPTER 5 DECRYPTABLE ARG
This is more of a rambly post rather than anything because I have ideas rattling around in my head.
‘But you… You worked here. So, if anyone deserves to die alone… it’s you.’ – Mommy Long Legs, Marie Payne, Chapter 2.
‘Wait- I recognise you… Yes, I remember. You used to work here! How are you...alive?’ – Miss Delight, Chapter 3.
‘And, to think Playtime had someone of such rare quality, and never noticed. Funny. I can’t say I remember seeing your face before. But I’m curious. Why come back? It can’t be that a vague letter was your only reason. Was there someone you loved here? Someone you’d lost? Was it the pain of not knowing for sure that brought you here?’ – The Doctor, Dr. Harley Sawyer, Chapter 4.
What we definitely know is that we worked in Playtime Co. but we were low in the hierarchy as Dr. Harley Sawyer doesn’t recognise us. I like to assume we must’ve worked with the children, possibly as a counsellor. This mostly stems from Mommy and Miss Delight knowing us. However, Mommy is known to have been very aggressive toward staff, to the point that they had Stella Greyber make recorded instructions for the kids so no adults entered the Game Station, so perhaps it’s Marie Payne that knew us? It could also be maybe we grew up in Playcare then become an employee, and that’s how Mommy knows us?
Also other things The Doctor said strike me as interesting: ‘Why come back? It can’t be that a vague letter was your only reason.’. As far as I’m aware, we haven’t told anyone we were lured back to the factory by the letter (considering we haven’t said a word the entire game) but Dr. Sawyer knows about the letter. Until Chapter 5 I would’ve believe it was the Prototype that wrote and sent it. But during the tea party cut scene, The Prototype spoke as if Poppy was the one who invited us.
‘I built us a home and kept us safe. And you repaid me by bringing in an outsider…’ - The Prototype, Oliver, Chapter 5.
I don’t think this is in reference to the letter but more because Poppy brought us deeper into the factory and involved us in the civil war like situation that’s been going on since the Hour of Joy. I also don’t believe it’s Poppy that wrote the letter because 1) she was locked in her case, if she can’t get out the case how would she have been able to write the letter in the first place never mind somehow send it out? And 2) The letter is sent to the Player so it must be from someone that knew the player, unless multiple letters and tapes were sent out to former employees. I don’t think this is possible because everyone has been implied to be in Playtime Co. the day of the Hour of Joy, the exceptions being ourselves and Eddie Ritterman.
However, I don’t think we are Eddie Ritterman because Mr Ritterman was one of the higher ups and very aware of the Bigger Bodies Initiative, Dr. Sawyer would’ve for sure recognised us if we were Eddie. Also Eddie Ritterman definitely didn’t work with the children as he was Head of Research, if he was in contact with a child it wasn’t for good reasons.
Anyways, circling back, the letter! So, we can assume the Prototype didn’t write it, Dr. Sawyer probably knew about the letter through watching whoever wrote it write it as he has access to the security cameras in the factory and even tells us he’s been watching us this whole time. The question remains: who wrote us the letter?
It has to be from someone that knew us when we worked in Playtime Co. which also links to something else Dr. Sawyer said: ‘Was there someone you loved here? Someone you’d lost? Was it the pain of not knowing for sure that brought you here?’. And Dr. Sawyer’s further taunting kind of confirm this must’ve been the case: ‘The experiments killed everyone, including whoever you came back for. You know that by now, yes?’. I say this because I feel like Mob are pushing that narrative, we either knew someone who we cared about that disappeared or the pain of not knowing what happened brought us back. The letter was just the catalyst.
The most obvious choice at this current time seems to be: Richard Lovitz. He’s been heard or mentioned in just about every chapter. However, we don’t know how much he knew. I’ve seen theories saying the Rich could’ve been apart of the group that conspired to release the toys and that he quit or called in sick before or the day of the Hour of Joy. However, I believe if Rich was part of that group, he can’t be the player. Playtime Co. don’t just let people quit as we learned that Boxxy Boo was sort of a disposal system for people that knew too much and were a liability. As for calling in sick, honestly it feels a bit out of character for Rich. From what we know, Rich is a very outspoken individual, a stubborn one, and seems to care for the kids. Unless he had a sudden streak of cowardice (not calling him a coward), I cannot see Rich pulling a sickie.
However, that’s on the theory that he was a part of that group.
I feel that the player is someone that genuinely did not know what was happening. On the basis that we, the genuine player, are learning and discovering what happened as the games go on. So, if we are Rich he would not have been in on the Bigger Bodies. Also the questions come up, why would’ve Rich been off? Who would’ve sent Rich the letter?
The likelihood is that the player is Rich, however this latest ARG put a (at least I think so) fun idea in my head.
In RESTRICTED_condemnation_1995, Jessica Newman and Preston Willard are discussing what they will do when they escape. Jessica was raised in Playcare so Playtime Co. is her life (cult vibes) and Preston says ‘Well, I suppose I'd owe my wife a few explanations, wouldn't I? Not that that makes up for anything.’
Preston reveals that he, along with others, released the toys and Jessica gets upset. They argue, voices raised, which leads Huggy Wuggy right too them. In this video we see Preston running away only to bump (literally) into Chum Chompkins who picks him up.
In RESTRICTED_salvation, we see Jessica’s POV after running away from Huggy: she sees (i’m assuming) CatNap’s eyes glowing in the dark, she sees what happened to Thomas Clarke (rip), and she’s found by the Prototype. She’s pleading and apologising to the Prototype who says: ‘That’s funny, you’re the second person I’ve met today whose said that. The other was my good friend Preston. Preston was always nice to me. You were never very nice, were you, Doctor Newman?’ He then promptly stabs her, presumably killing her.
We then cut to where I’m assuming the Prototype has been doing his own experiments. We hear him before we see him as he says: ‘I’m so glad you were there when I needed you, Preston.’ He walks into frame as he says: ‘Now I can be there for you, always.’ And he says the finally words, he lowers down an amalgamation of different toys. The Prototype starts to walk off humming the Playtime theme tune as the very human eyes of the amalgamation dart around in their new body.
I’ve seen argument on who this amalgamation is between Jessica and Preston. Currently, I’m going off the more obvious in your face answer that this is Preston. I’m going to take the description from the wiki because I am terrible to see anything that too dark: His head being that of a Cat-Bee toy, his torso and legs being that of a Bunzo Bunny toy, his right arm being that of a Boogie Bot toy, and his left arm being that of a Bron (would be sick and twisted if this was the arm of Thomas Clarke) toy.
Just in case people don’t know, Dr. Preston Willard (PW) is important character as he has been littered through the majority content outside of the games (I could get into a whole rant about how lore and hidden details shouldn’t be in collabs but different thing for a different day) leaving hints, notes, lore and so on signing them off as either A Friend or as PW. He was actually the one that had Ayers come see Doey. Jack Ayers, one of the boys that makes up Doey, was the boy that fell and it’s made to appear Preston knew the Ayers family personally and seemed to have some involvement in making sure Jack was one of the boys put into Doey, seemingly done in an attempt to save Jack’s life. I only bring this up to show Preston is quite the major character even though he’s not really been mentioned or brought up inside the actual games.
The reason his amalgamation description is important is due to another part of the ARG where a discord user SeeingReason, someone that seems to inside the factory in 2004 trying to get some answers, puts a link in her bio that leads us to a bandcamp page that belongs to the user catbeefan95.
In catbeefan95 bio it says: ‘Back in the 90’s, my dad used to work for a toy company. He left a lot of audio recordings when he died.’
Okay, so who do we know that: worked in a toy factory in the 90s, had a partner so its possible they could at least have one child, and has a connection to Cat-Bee? Our good friend, Preston Willard. Also as far as we’re aware Preston hasn’t gone through conditioning so he still is Preston Willard mentally.
So, bring us back to main original question:
WHO ARE WE?
I feel we could be Preston’s wife and if I wanna take an even bigger leap, Preston’s wife could be Claire Harper!
The reason I feel the Player is Preston’s wife is that I feel Preston Willard is such a major character but also a background character that he must be appearing in the main story soon, as his amalgamation self and that is the person we have returned to come find. Also the letter we received told us the staff were still alive, it doesn’t mention the orphans. If we are the wife of Preston, we don’t know what happened to him probably believed he died as catbeefan95 (if they are ours and Preston’s child) said then that spark of hope that he could possibly be alive somewhere in the factory would make us want to investigate.
I don’t know if I genuinely believe it is Claire Harper but I’ll explain my thought process. Claire Harper is a beloved counsellor that worked with the orphans directly and very obviously cares for the children. It seems from the tape Claire Harper Debrief that Claire was going to adopt Marie Payne as she calls her ‘my little girl’ and as we know Marie Payne was transformed into Mommy Long Legs which could explain the great hatred she has towards us. If Mommy has any memories of her previous self she might remember Claire and might see Claire as betraying her and abandoning her to her fate. However, Claire very clearly loved Marie as she was distraught when she was told she couldn’t see or speak to Marie.
In Chapter 3, through journal entries, a young girl called Riley speaks highly of Claire, calling her the nice counsellor. Claire seems to have impacted the girl so much that she refused to eat anyone and starved, seemingly retaining some sense of self through having her lists that Claire had encouraged her to write.
In Chapter 4, Claire also crops up again in a Counsellor Report about Matthew Hallard, one of the boys used for Doey. She speaks very highly of him and seems to have really taken note of personality, even hoping that if he aged out of the orphanage that she could recommend him to join the counsellor team. The interesting thing about this document is that it’s being used in a bigger file recording test subjects as Stella Greyber added a sticky note saying ‘he is a good candidate for 1322C.’ I feel this important because it appears that Claire did not know anything about the experiments and probably believed that the Bigger Bodies were some kind of really advanced animatronic because, honestly, wouldn’t you?
Anyways, we know Claire as Claire Harper but she is Miss. So, it could be Preston and her met through work, started a relationship, and got married sometime during or after 1993, as that seems to be the last time we see Claire Harper name as Harper. Could also be that Claire just didn’t change or name, or she double barrelled it, and just goes by her maiden name for the children to keep it simple. With this in mind, if Claire is Preston’s wife and catbeefan95 is the child of Preston, it would make sense Claire is their mother and it could explain why Claire wasn’t in work during the Hour of Joy, she could’ve been on maternity leave.
I don’t know why, even it isn’t Claire (her name is more a placeholder rather than making up an OC), maternity leave feels more of a legitimate reason not to have been at the Hour of Joy rather than something like a day off, pulling a sickie or having quit. Like the tragedy of imagining:
Claire, swollen bellied, sending her husband off to work, he’s acting strange and nervous, more than normal. He gives Claire a peck goodbye, neither of them realising this is their final goodbye. Later, Preston hasn’t returned home. Something is wrong, something happened at the factory but no one is telling her anything! Where’s her husband?! What about the orphans?! What happened to them? They won’t tell her. They eventually tell her her husband died in an accident but they don’t tell her anything else and give her a payout clearly to shut her up. She’s been left as a single parent, their child will never know their father outside of stories she tells them.
It’s been ten years, the grief and the questions never fade but they fall into the backburner. She has to be there for her child, their child. Then, a letter and a tape come through the letter box. Spelling mistakes and a crude drawing of a flower, but the staff are alive? But they told her Preston was dead? Who sent her this? Is it a cruel joke or is the hope she feels raising worth chasing?
So, that also circles back to who could’ve written the letter? I would say we still definitely don’t have a clear answer. It could be Preston but I also don’t feel he would suddenly ten years later drag his wife back into the mess of Playtime Co.. Could be Jessica? We don’t know if maybe the Prototype mortally injured her then transformed her into a toy, I feel that could mean she is maybe the account holder to SeeingReason like maybe cult-like spell after the Hour of Joy and nine years (2004 for her) have worn off, but she still wants to be saved? Maybe its Rich? He always seemed to care for the children, maybe the Prototype done a similar thing to Rich that he did to Preston as thanks for always being nice to them? However, the spelling mistakes make me think it was someone who is a child? Maybe it was one of the adults I mentioned and they are like me and are dyslexic beyond belief!
Who knows at this point. Like I said this was just a little silly idea (that I kind wanna write a fanfic about) that was rattling around in my head. What writing this has made clear for me is with it being obvious we are getting more chapters I would like more focus put into the original mysteries like we understand the jist at this point of Playtime Co. were doing evil experiments on children (and some adults I guess) in the hopes of achieving immorality and its giving cult vibes. But there are still burning questions that hope can be answered within the game rather than in a different game or media.
Was I the only one that doesn’t understand where people got the idea this was the last chapter? It’s not been advertised as the last chapter at all, maybe because the Prototype reveal was being hinted?
I don't understand the Cooper Howard/Lucy MacLean ship? Like does everyone else not see a disgruntled guardian and his sunshine ward dragging him into situations

Random thought: I feel like the fight against heaven and Adam dying came too early…
What I mean is I think the first season should’ve been more of establishing the hotel and maybe a bit more the world, specifically the Pride ring since Helluva Boss kind of does more the heavy lifting of exploring Hell and it’s different rings.
Second season could’ve been the build up of fighting heaven along with the regular shenanigans with the finale being Adam dies and Sir P getting redeemed.
But obviously my feelings may change with how the second season ends up being.
You cannot tell me Christina does not have the exact face structure perfect for Morticia!
Our gal is a horror queen and she would've ATE the role of Morticia in Wednesday (Netflix) (not saying Catherine Zeta isn't doing a good job personally would've liked someone more natural looking don't hate me) yk she would've put heart and soul into Morticia Addams!
ADDITIONALLY:
I do genuinely like Luis Guzmán's performance as Gomez...but...
THE EYES
If I had to select an actor that had those eyes it'd probably be Rami Malek:
wtf is his eye colour
Obviously the eyes aren't the most important thing about his character but idk it lowkey bothers me?? Like even Isaac Ordonez has the eyes:
So, I had been working on two different ideas: How to rework Viconia where her whole story arc from the previous games doesn't get shat on and how to make the Tadpole Troupe more diverse.
I don't know why the thought came to me but it did: Shadowheart should've (or I think it would've been fun) been Viconia's daughter.
Please hear me out!
If you don't know, Viconia has literally the worse luck in the world it seems, like read her wiki page history I'm sure that's just then tip of the iceberg.
When travelling with Gorion's Ward she is a cleric of Shar, and if not romanced, after their adventures she goes to Waterdeep to run an enclave there, which Viconia in BG3 does tell us:
[Viconia DeVir: I had an enclave in Waterdeep, you know. Much grander than this. Shar ordered me to raze it, kill all who followed me - claim they betrayed me, when in fact I slew those who showed nothing but loyalty.]
I really think Viconia remaining with Shar sucks major balls. Literally, she goes on to be a hero in her own right in her epilogue:
[No longer with Protagonist, Viconia went on to found a cult dedicated to Shar in the city of Waterdeep. One of her followers betrayed her, however, prompting the slaughter of the whole tainted lot. Shar admonished Viconia strongly for this, but she was unrepentant and again wandered the Realms. Viconia was still formidable, and went on to prevent an attempt by the Knights of the Shield to take over Calimport, even worked with Drizzt Do'Urden to save the elven city of Suldanessalar from a Zhentarim plot. For this last act, the elves accepted her, and Queen Ellesime bestowed the highest honors of the Seldarine, an accolade never before given to one of her dark kind. Viconia reportedly bowed without emotion, and then left. Her fate remains unknown.]
Does that sound like someone who would continue to follow Shar?? My gal work with Drizzt Do'Urden! Saved at least two cities! Bestowed the highest award that no drow had ever received!?
Seriously, to me Viconia DeVir and Mother Superior are two completely different characters.
So, how does this work out for her to be Shadowheart's mother? I've got two alternatives that I could see the story using both at the same time, which they do with Gorion's Ward and Abdel Adrian.
Option 1: Viconia had a relationship with a human Selûnite
It could've been in Viconia's wanderings she save a town/village and a human took a keen liking to her. Either a fling or a genuine relationship, Viconia ends up pregnant and out shoots Jenevelle. You could still have it that her dad was a werewolf, but because he's human the years of torture on that torture disk thing caused him to perish.
(whatever that thing is)
Option 2: Shadowheart is the daughter of Viconia and Gorion's Ward
So, in Viconia's romanced ending she has a son with Gorion's Ward and fucking dies.
[Protagonist and Viconia continued adventuring long after leaving Tethyr. He became an important political figure, and she was his trusted counsel. Eventually Viconia bore Protagonist's child, which first served to strain their relationship. The birth, however, changed her, and she dedicated herself to raising the boy, teaching both the ways of the drow and of Protagonist's people. She marvelled at the understanding in his eyes, but unfortunately, didn't live to see him grow. Viconia was poisoned by a servant of Lolth, her last words whispered to her loving mate in private. Protagonist raised his son in secret, and tales vary on the result. Some say they waged a crusade against the drow, but all agree that the former child of Bhaal never forgot the love of his dark maiden.]
Obviously this isn't canon anymore, I guess? But, we've seen in the game Larian picks and chooses bits n pieces from the source material. I also don't like how Gorion's Ward isn't mentioned too much, I did hear that apparently Tav was meant to be a child of Gorion's Ward before it got scrapped and I do like the idea of descentants being part of the party.
If they had chosen this route of Shadowheart being Gorion's Ward and Viconia's child they could twist it in a few ways:
Viconia and Gorion's Ward did have a son but he was killed by Lolth servants rather than Viconia, making Shadowheart their second child.
Viconia and Gorion's Ward did have a son and they had Shadowheart as well but Gorion's Ward was killed by Lolth servants rather than Viconia, making the son still alive.
They never had a son, Lolth servant still kills Gorion's Ward
They never had a son, no Lolth servant kills anyone but Gorion's Ward still dies before we see Viconia again because people would not like a retconned CHARNAME we hate you abdel adrian fuck you
I think option 3 or 4 would make more sense game wise because you could still be vague on whether or not Shadowheart's other parent was Gorion's Ward, that way the player can decide based on who they romanced in their playthroughs. I do like option 2, either the brother could've spent all these years looking for his mother and sister and trying to save them or on the torture disk with his mother.
Also I don't think Viconia would become a Selûnite herself, honestly. I feel like two goddess' fucking you over would put you off worshipping another. However, I could see her wanting the best for her children, it says so in her epilogue she is a dedicated mother and I could imagine her wanting to set her child on the right path, some insecurity of poisoning her child's chance of a good life by being their mother.
I've said this in a post before but I genuinely didn't realise that Shadowheart's dad was a werewolf until I read it in a wiki article. I thought it was a manipulated memory and her dad (who we could switch out for Viconia) was illusion or replaced by a wolf to instil a fear in Shadowheart and make it seem like Mother Superior had saved her.
And, could you imagine the scene! You've defeated Mother Superior and her enclave, you got to where Shadowheart's parents are, with Minisc and Jaheira in your party, and hanging limp on the torture disk thing is the familiar face of Viconia DeVir.
Also Viconia's child being a target of Shar feels more possible than some random Selûnite couple. Honestly, you could take the whole Selûnite bit out. Could you imagine how pissed a god, especially one like Shar, would be if someone who had just killed a whole enclave of followers just shrugged of being scorned by you? Wouldn't you want to make them suffer for years? Make them remember what kind of god you are?
Anyways, here's half-drow Shadowheart!
(please excuse spelling mistakes and grammar I'm dyslexic)
I just want to add onto this because I have been rereading Minsc and Boo's Journal of Villainy and I came across Viconia's page. Now I want to clarify this book is not considered canon but is written by James Ohlen, the creative director for the Baldur's Gate games other than BG3, so you can kinda pick and choose what's true and what isn't, Larian certainly did.
That's the full page which I won't be writing fully out and I understand it's blurry.
So, in this version, Viconia is still worshipping Shar but Shar has ordered her to work with cults that worship the Elder Elemental Eye...HUH? Doesn't explain why and it certainly isn't mentioned in the game so it's just one of those things you just have to pretend you didn't read.
The reason I bring this up is for two reasons:
1) Her Brother
[Viconia first lost the Spider Queen's favour when she refused to sacrifice an infant. In a desperate attempt to appease Lolth, her own mother arranged for Viconia to be sacrificed herself. She was save by her devoted brother, Valas. For this crime, Valas was transformed into a drider.]
I purposefully didn't highlight 'an act she saw as pointless.' because once again, Viconia isn't a evil person deep down. She's a bit like Astarion, she's had years upon years of living in the brutal drow society that everything she does is for survival but deep down she's not an evil individual she just doesn't know better until meeting Gorion's Ward and goes through the happenings of the Baldur's Gate games.
Anyways, her brother, Valas, saved her from being sacrificed and was turned into a drider.
My theory/headcanon/AU is that Valas is Kar'niss.
This really builds off of @karniss-bg3 theory which you can have a look at for yourself here, he has theorised that Kar'niss name means 'productive gambler'. Now, I headcanon that when someone is transformed into a drider they loose all sense of self, including their name, which is somewhat true as we're told that Kar'niss mind is super fractured. Maybe driders are named after the crimes they committed or something along those lines? Because helping his sister escape from his mother and Lolth's wrath is a big gamble. Of course, Valas/Kar'niss would have known there was no escape for him but would his sacrifice be worth it allowing Viconia to escape or would it all be for nothing, he turned drider and Viconia sacrificed. Now, we know that Viconia survives and goes on to save multiple cities making Valas/Kar'niss a 'productive gambler'.
I'm aware I'm pulling at straws!
But I'd loved a scene in this AU, Shadowheart being Viconia's daughter, of Kar'niss in his fractured mind not outright but seeing Viconia in Shadowheart. Maybe making a nonsense comment of how he's seen her before and thank the gods she lived but not even he knows why he said that.
2) This feels more like Viconia
[Viconia travels the Underdark looking for fellow outcasts. SHe has put together a motely band including a pair of driders named Cackle and Backle and a deep spider that she has raised since she saved it from being eaten by its mother. She also rides an achaierai that lost the rest of its flock to a war band of dwarves.]
THIS IS SO CUTE!
I want this! I want to meet Cackle and Backle! I don't know why WotC so set on trying to make her appear as this unredeemable drow that doesn't care about anything and she is just evil because they also add stuff like this that just goes right against it! If anything, sounds like Viconia would be interested in the Society of Brilliance, a group that want to make the Underdark more habitable.
Instead of exploring Lenore De Hurst tower, we could've explored maybe Viconia's home? or Lenore is an alias and I can't remember if they say anything about Lenore not having responded in a while (I've assumed the woman died) but Blurg and Ommelum could say like they hadn't heard from her in 30 years. I say 30 because Shadowheart looks 10-13 years old in her flashback.
But we could've had hints throughout the tower/house of Lenore actually being Viconia that maybe you wouldn't realise right away. We could've met Cackle and Backle, the spider she raised and the achaierai! I'd rather that than that whole robot thing.
Genuinely upset we didn't get Alfira as an actual temporary companion.
I genuinely thought we were going to get her for a long rest or two before killing her. Idk I just feel it'd be more gut wrenching for Redemption Durge if she was a genuine friend of ours and then we killed her before the end of Act 1, like the guilt and angst would be chef kiss! Also more reactions from the companion being like where's Alfira? Idk if it's just my game but they never like question where she is? It's not like Alfira joined the group secretly, the companions make comments during the interaction.
Obviously this is the last patch so they won't changing anything major again of the game, so I'll (or someone else will) just have to write a fanfic about it!

I hear a lot of people talk about how Astarion's companion quest doesn't have anything to do with the bigger plot, which is true and I don't think it's a bad thing.
But I've also been thinking about making Cazador a greater villain to the story for a possible fanfic idea. And I thought about making him a chosen to a god. So, I had thought that Loviatar, Maiden of Pain would be the deity for him.
So, let me give an insight to what I was thinking:
The reason I thought Loviatar would fit Cazador quite well, to me, feels quite obvious: he loves to torture his spawn. He clearly finds pleasure in causing them pain. So much so he has Godey to 'punish' them when he is unable to.
I also feel it wouldn't be out of no where to have a chosen of Loviatar be part of the big plot as we meet Abdirak in the Goblin Camp in Act 1. I also feel the fact we meet him in the Goblin Camp is very important because this is where we meet the Priestess Gut, Dror Ragzlin, and Minathara. And, these three individually represent the Dead Three's chosen.
Dror Ragzlin & Kethric Thorm = Myrkul
Priestess Gut & Enver Gortash = Bane
Minathara & Orin the Red = Bhaal
You have pretty significant interactions with all three, but you also have a one with Abdirak as well. He has quite an important job in getting information out of people through torture means to try and find the grove. He even gives you Loviatar's Blessing if you let him smack you around.
Abdirak & Cazador Szarr = Loviatar
This could have also been a moment of depending if you had discovered Astarion was a vampire yet or not could have had some dailogue eluding that Abdirak knows of Astarion or outright saying something along the lines that Cazador will be pleased when he returns Astarion back to him. It would have Astarion have more enthusiasm to kill the goblin camp leaders.
Also feel for as much as we hear about Cazador, we don't really get a lot of screen time with him. I don't know maybe it was just me that felt a bit underwhelmed that we went there and just killed him (not saying that part is underwhelming but how quick it all happens is what is underwhelming).
Also the Rite of Profane Ascension could fit in with when Enver Gortash and Durge went to steal the Crown of Karsus. Like I don't know if I'm crazy or maybe I just read it in a Durgetash fic but did Gortash encourage Durge to join him in raiding Mephistopheles infernal vault by telling him that the devil possessed some of Bhaal's weapons? If that's true (although if we're thinking along the lines of me writing this fic then don't matter if it is or isn't) then he could've persuade Cazador to join them in the same manner of informing him about the Rite of Profane Ascension.
I also feel Loviatar would approve as he is literally carving the infernal writing into his spawn, he just has to mention her name or whatever and she'd probably accept it as an offering. And him being able to walk in the sun gives him more opportunity to bring pain and suffering to others.
Astarion also mentions when talking about being turned into a vampire about how painful it was, saying,
"I remember how it hurt when I turned into a vampire. My body writhed and warped while I was utterly helpless, the grip of death owned my heart as it beat its last."
The saying 'Beauty is pain' fits Cazador quite well in my mind. As I have headcanon of Cazador being obsessed with perfection and maybe that's part of the reason his main spawn are sent out to lure people back to him. He wants to be perfect and hence his spawn most also be the most perfect beings to represent him. The only way to model perfection and beauty is through pain, in his mind.
I also have this image in my head of the intro for Act 3 that'll I'll write a little snippet for you:
“Duties, duties, duties.” The flaming fist sergeant started, her voice different to the serious tone she held mere moments before. “Patrolling and saluting and following and bowing and scraping and ‘yes, sir, no sir, rip and cut your throat, sir’.”
From her sleeve she pulled out a knife, with a very noticeable red stone in the handle, and pierced it through the canvas, right through where Gortash’s painted self throat was. She prowled towards the lord, her form changing for the sergeant to a changeling in red armor, Orin.
“Your plan is falling apart, lordling.” She said, her hand sliding up Gortash’s arm. “Give me a reason not to cut you to ribbons.”
Gortash turned to Orin, “We need to focus on reuniting the stones, or the brain will break free. These quakes are just the start.”
This answer didn’t seem to appease Orin as she bore her teeth and growled.
“Now, now, Orin. You must control yourself.” A nasally voice reprimanded gently from the shadow. Hiding from the sunlight, seated comfortably in one of Gortash’s cushy armchairs with his long fingers resting on his staff, also adorned with a noticeable gem. “There was no way for young Enver to know the Prism-bearers would’ve been able to kill the general.”
“My prodigal blood-kin is among them.”
Gortash’s eyes seemed to light up, “They live?”
“Barely,” Orin huffed, dislodging her knife from the canvas. “I made mince of their ugly mind matter, and if they dare return, I will strip out their offal.”
“I sure hope they do.” Cazador said, oily, as he slunk off in the shadows. “They have something of mine and intend on getting it back.”
“They will be traveling to the city, there’s no doubt in my mind.” Gortash said, looking much more optimistic than the start of their conversation. “Let’s make sure we give them a Baldurian welcome.”
Problems with this idea:
It's the Dead Three, not the Dead Three plus Loviatar. She does serve Bane but still it's not quite as smooth sounding. I could do an AU where it's really the Dead Four but I hate even numbers and it just doesn't sound as good imo.
Cazador has his whole becoming Vampire Ascendant going on. It's not a direct issue really as it could work within the story but does it feel maybe it's too much?
So, what are your thoughts? Please be respectful and kind as this is just a silly idea, thank you!
I'm sure other people were confused when we met Dalyria and Petras in the Flophouse and saw how different the other spawn look to Astarion.
And it's not just his siblings, the other spawn that Cazador had locked up beneath the palace look the same.
black sclera, glowing red iris's with no pupil and shark like teeth seems to be the common traits of Cazador's spawn, all but Astarion. The only vampire that looks similar to Astarion is Cazador himself.
Of course, I'm not going to sit here and suggest something ridiculous like they're secretly related or Astarion has been a true vampire all along.
I feel there's a common theory that Astarion lost the disadvantages of being a vampire thanks to either the tadpole or the Astral Prism but I feel like the appearance traits of being a spawn also vanished when he was no longer under his master's control.
That still doesn't explain his white hair. Now, I know it's weird to focus in on such a tiny detail in a world where there a Dragonborns and Teiflings to worry about someone's hair colour but that's how roll bby.
Originally, I thought maybe his hair had turned white from either becoming a vampire spawn or through canities subita (better known as Marie Antoinette syndrome), but then obviously you see Cazador and the other spawn who all have different hair colours and shades.
It is still possible Astarion's hair could've changed due to stress but I believe Astarion's hair colour is it's natural colour. Do you know what elven race has white hair?
DROW
'But Astarion doesn't have blue/purple skin!' I hear you cry! And that is where DnD lore comes in! May I introduce:
SZARKAI AKA ALBINO DROW
Before going any further I need to address the fucked up thing about Szarkai. So, Szarkai are a super rate mutation and are more common in the Noble Houses, because of that they are seen as blessings from Lolth (Szarkai means 'ghost spider') upon the noble family that births one. Pretty much the Szarkai are held on a pedestal and believe to be Lolth's favourites which is really fucked up in a society of Dark Elves -.-
Real life racism aside, because of their pale skin; the Szarkai could very easily integrate with surface elves and just be seen as albino surface elves. Because of this the Szarkai are usually trained as spies and sent to the surface on deep-cover long-term assignments that furthered their house and/or for the benefit of Lolth.
Now my only evidence to Astarion possibly being a Szarkai isn't just the far he's pale and has white hair.
[Many drow thought of szarkai as a separate race, but they were genetically identical, possessing only the traits of albinism. Nevertheless, some had minor deformities, such as a lack of hair, small fangs, or gnarled and claw-like hands, suggesting the popular view had a slight basis in fact.]
SMALL FANGS
SMALL FANGS
SMALL FANGS
Okay, okay, I know the fangs and the red eyes are to show he's a vampire, very traditional vampire traits. However, we've seen that spawn don't look like that. So, my theory(nonsense) is that the tadpole/Astral Prism remove all features and traits of being a vampire spawn! He can walk in the sun, enter buildings without permission, and he reverts back to how he looked before turning into a spawn.
Obviously, stuff like the bite mark and the carvings remain because that actually part of him now and not part of the transformation of become a vampire spawn. The Astarion we see is the Astarion he was before Cazador found him.
I think it also makes sense with his character build. Being a charlatan sounds exactly like the Szarkai.
[Charlatan - You’re an expert in manipulation, prone to exaggeration and more than happy to profit from it. Bending the truth and turning allies against each other will lead to greater success down the road.]
[Szarkai agents might be engaged in simple gathering of information and passing what they learned back to the masters, or in learning the lay of the land and the makeup of local politics. Some might form sleeper cells with the goal of future sabotage or attack. Otherwise, they would be agents provocateur, discreetly manipulating surface-dwellers, turning would-be allies against the drow against one another instead, inflicting sabotage, and keeping communities small and vulnerable.]
They appear to get involved with local politics. And what did Astarion say he did when we ask him to tell us more about him in the beginning?
[Astarion: Oh, what's to tell? I'm a magistrate back in the city - it's all rather tedious.]
Plus at the Wither's Party we see that without the Astral Prism/tadpole Astarion looks the same, why? Because Cazador is dead. Sure he's still a spawn but he's not a Cazador's spawn. He's free. And there's nothing to suggest the his siblings and the other spawn didn't revert after losing exposure to being Cazador's spawn.
I think it would've been interesting to see Astarion interact with Minthara and other drow in the game with this premise. I'd also could've seen it as a reason as to where Cazador favoured Astarion so much. He already had the skills to manipulate and seduce trained into him from being a Szarkai. It would've also been interesting if Cazador had known the whole time, like imagine there's a scene where Astarion reveals to you he is Szarkai and it's a big moment for him because it's secret and it was beaten into him never to tell, then when we confront Cazador either through him himself or maybe through a journal in his office or from Goodey we could've found out that was why Cazador had targeted him that he had in fact set the Gur on him and he wanted the rarest gem to be part of his collection. To add an extra angst to it, it could be that Astarion's family ratted him out because remember in Drow society its a matriarchy where the men are treated like shit. Maybe Astarion didn't have as bad as a time because of his albinism but at the end of the day he's still male.
SPOILERS FOR BG3 ACT 3 AND SHADOWHEART'S COMPANION QUEST
This isn’t really a theory or headcanon but more of a random thought after finishing Shadowheart’s Companion Quest. The thought came to be me literally as Mother Superior (trying to forget it’s Viconia T^T) speaks on her reason why she’s done everything she done in the name of Shar.
[Shadowheart: Why? Why me? Why all this effort?
Mother Superior: I had an enclave in Waterdeep, you know. Much greater than this. Shar ordered me to raze it, kill all who followed me - claim they betrayed me, when in fact I slew those who showed nothing but loyalty. Shar had me do that, and I did. To cover my tracks. To usher in you.
Shadowheart: What are you talking about?]
So at this point, I was the same as Shadowheart; what is she talking about? Then she says:
[Mother Superior: You became my mission. To take a child of Selûne's, and turn her over to Lady Shar. To show that all light fades, and darkness will prevail in the end.]
And my brain, stupidly, jumped to 'Oh my god, is Shadowheart another child of Selûne??' because that could maybe make sense with Aylin knowing so much about Shadowheart, originally I thought the whole fear of wolves thing was like a Sharran tactic to convert children to be Sharran's. You know 'you're in danger, we save you, you owe us and now join our cult' vibe. But if that's a specific thing that only happened to Shadowheart, of course another child of Selûne would know, right? Like Selûne herself might have told/projected it Aylin what had happened, something like that.
[Mother Superior: Lady Shar commanded me. And I obeyed. I do not question - I merely act as she wills me to. All this was to make you into what the Dark Lady needed you to be - the planning. The training. Those deaths in Waterdeep. It was all to groom you to replace me at her right hand side. And still, you threw it away]
See, realistically I know that she means Shar wanted a follower of Selûne to become the Chosen of Shar to rub it in her sister's face. But this is a lot for one random child that's parents are Selûnites. And yes, I know we meet her parents literally right after this in the Chamber of Loss, but you know who else shows their face in the Chamber of Loss?
FUCKING SHAR
The only time we've seen a god show themselves is with Mystra to speak to Gale, her former Chosen, ex-lover and holder of the Netherese Orb. Mystra, I doubt, just randomly shows herself or invites for someone who uses the Weave for a quick chat. That's why the gods have Chosen's, to be their voice on the mortal plane.
Shar's had Mother Superior hold Shadowheart's parents captive for however many years Shadowheart has worshipped Shar, watching her being tortured and groomed (also having her hurt them as part of it). Also, Shadowheart has had that pain in her hand since we met her which we learn is every time her parents suffer, she suffers.
And, look, we defeat Mother Superior and her enclave but we didn't rid Shar of every Sharran. So for her to appear before Shadowheart to taunt her and try to get her make her suffer more with freeing her parents means killing them or letting them live means she will suffer that the pain in her hand for the rest of her life unless she comes back in Shar's embrace...
And, I'm meant to believe Shadowheart is some random child and Shar was like 'meh that one will do'?
Now, I know what you must be thinking: 'But we see her parents!' We do! Here they are:
Arnell Hallowleaf: Werewolf Elf
Emmeline Hallowleaf: Human
So how could Shadowheart be a child of Selûne? Let me, unfortunately, bring Mystra back into the conversation.
In 1995, a 2e accessory book was released called 'The Seven Sisters' where we learn about Mystra's seven Chosen daughters.
All (and tbh I use all loosely) seven of the sister's are the daughters of Dornal Silverhand and his wife Elué Silverhand. But how are they Mystra's daughters? Oh, you know, she only went and possessed Elué for so long and made her bear SEVEN children that it led to Dornal thinking she was possessed by an evil spirit and killed her. Mystra decided she wanted to breed herself good Chosen's and Elminister even suggests that she may have manipulated events to make sure the two met. Which honestly seems likely since she possessed Elué and used her to seduce Dornal. Elué does end up agreeing to sharing her body with Mystra but that's only after Mystra has to reveal herself, not because she wanted to.
Anyways, the reason I say that all seven of the sisters are loosely all children of Dornal, Elué and Mystra is because like I said Dornal didn't know Elué was willingly sharing her body with Mystra and just saw his wife turned into a husk, literally only being held together by Mystra's magic. A cleric told him that his wife was being possessed by an intelligent and powerful force, but didn't say it was Mystra. So, what did Dornal do? Fucking chopped his wife's head off. But I digress. With Elué dead, Mystra put the soul of her seventh child into the unborn dead baby of Iliryztara Veladorn, a follower of Eilistraee; a good drow goddess.
So, we've learned that Faerûnian pantheons, which both Mystra and Selune are, have the ability to possess people, become a third parent in the make up of mortal children (and therefore making the children immortal no matter their race), and if need be can transport the soul of their children into others (whether them being dead is an absolute must idk).
Selûne is a chaotic good deity so I think it could very well be in the realm of possibility that she could do something similar, considering their pals n all makes it more possible in my mind.
So, yeah, that was thoughts. Of course, there's literally no other evidence to back up to claim hence why it's not a theory but just a silly thought that went through my mind.
Thanks for reading my bullshit if you got this far. I do have other stupid BG3 rants that I want to write but this was my smallest one, small relief for my over active brain.
