All you need to get me interested in a show is an odd, off-putting, strange little man with autistic behaviors
blood being frequently described as having a "coppery smell" in fiction is kind of funny considering that there is a metallic component to blood and it's not copper
in fact if your blood smells or tastes like copper you probably have more urgent things to worry about than it being outside your body. it's probably better that it's not inside you anymore actually.
story where blood is described as smelling or tasting "coppery" and it's actually early foreshadowing that all the characters are suffering from heavy metal poisoning
so what you telling me is that a whole bunch of generators were set up to power the equipment for whatever bullshit we have planned for America 250 and now the National Mall is just spraying dilute flammable liquid all over itself. that's awesome that's fucking awesome someone go light a match
Upwards of 24% of trans people have long covid. And that's just the largest percentage. Other queer people are also suffering from long covid at higher rates than the general population. It's specific because we're abandoning around a quarter (and growing) of our community for the faƧade of normal at pride and other events. For context, AIDS became a rallying point for activism and care when only ~10% of the gay community was affected.
If you believe you would have cared for AIDS patients and marched for Act Up in the 80s and 90s and you aren't wearing a mask in 2025, no you wouldn't have.

remember that pride is still a protest
Your DA love interest probably never brushed their teeth in their life.
Let that sink in.
Oh my god
I canāt believe it
All that obsessive research into medieval dental hygiene actually paid off
I was spending all this time thinking āLiterally no one cares about Thedosian dental hygiene, Amy, why are you wasting your time on thisā but HERE IT IS
So yeah, this isnāt actually true! While the toothbrush itself is a fairly modern invention, thereās a well recorded history of people in medieval Europe using a combination of various sweet-smelling mouth rinses and scrubbing their teeth clean with a cloth and a mild abrasive herb paste of some sort. Some common rinses included mint and wine or mint and vinegar, and pastes included things like marjoram and mint, rosemary and charcoal, and vinegar, pickling alum, white salt and honey.
Someone even tested a bunch of historical remedies out and found out that they were mostly pretty effective.
So rest assured, your DA makeouts are probably reasonably minty fresh!
Remember when Lil Nas X beautifully explored his sexuality, seduced and killed the devil to the banger of all time, and instead of cheering on this openly gay and proud Black artist for his artistry and fighting back against respectability politics, suddenly said respectability politics was all the Queerest Place on the Internet cared about? Hm. Wonder what happened there.
Anyway I miss him and hope he's doing better with his mental health šš¾
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as āproblematicā in class and our professor was like, āThatās cool, but āproblematicā doesnāt really mean anything. It means that the thing youāre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatās not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itās not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youāre trying to say that this is bad, but you donāt want to say ābad.ā Is that right?ā
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the ābadā thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, āIām uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.ā
Once we stopped calling things āproblematicā and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, āthatās racistā or āthatās misogynisticā or āew capitalism grossā out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, āUhhh... Iām not sure whatās so bad?ā and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canāt help but think of this professor being like, āGood starting point, now letās get specific.ā I think when we have to commit to saying āthatās ___ā it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weāre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itās art, and it should be full of problems, because thatās what art is.
matthew lillard just shared this on his instagram, heās such an icon š³ļøāš

Can @raccoonmilf vouch for this? Super rad if true.
Yes itās true
I keep seeing people asking āis solarpunk really punk?ā because itās too happy and optimistic and stuff
and Iām picturing a perfect moment in a solarpunk community ā the neighbourhood mayor standing with a shit-eating grin on her face when the cops come and cut them off from city power, and nothing turns off
This is my absolute favorite example of how solarpunk is punk. Also, Detroit (and a lot of other places) could probably use something similar for water. Especially in places where itās illegal to harvest rainwater. I dunno, maybe water tanks cleverly designed as yard art?
Like⦠yeah itās happy and optimistic, but my view of solarpunk at least is in complete defiance of many capitalist ideals so if thatās not punk ⦠āPunkā isnāt edgy, dark and gritty. Not to me. Building a society completely based on renewable resources, accessibility for all, and constant sharing is a big fuck you to the current system if you ask me.
Exactly. Near future solarpunk especially requires rebelling against the current system. Punk is about defiance (at least thatās what itās come to mean colloquially). Defiance doesnāt have to be destruction and violence and grit, it can look like stubborn creation and community building and rejecting many of the dominant systemās values.Ā
Wait. Why would harvesting rainwater be illegal?
Thereās an interpretation of the concept of property that says if something has value, then someone should be getting paid for it. Despite being flatly absurd and riddled with obvious logical flaws, this has been one of the major philosophies of property in the US, in some contexts (including water) for over a hundred years. This Washington Post article gets into it in detail.Ā
According to this logic, if there are water suppliers in a region, then theyāre entitled to money when people get water. Collecting rainwater for yourself gets around that, so, in this concept of property, itās a form of theft.
There have also been legal battles over people growing food in their lawns, generating their own electricity, etc. If youāre looking to extricate yourself from the systems wherein you have to serve the interests of specific wealthy people to survive, many parts of the western world are ready to use the force of government intervention to stop you.
I feel like a big chunk of the ādark, grittyā aesthetic punk is associated with came as a reaction to the bright, glamorous āAmerican Dreamā imagery and patronizing ad campaigns of the 50s. But now that weāre being sold āThe future is bleak and dirty and thereās nothing you can do about it,ā being optimistic and cheerful is the most punk and rebellious thing you can do
This is an extremely well put point.
they got married btw
oh youāre not kidding
Imagine being the gays at a pride event in 2004 living their lives when someone grabs the microphone and announces to the room that Ronald Reagan was pronounced dead. Can you even imagine the hype, the celebration, the pure elation
This is the Pride Month that It will happen. I feel it in my gay bones
happy pride month for it/its users, polyamorous people, xenogenders, non-transitioning trans people, and other "weird" identities. btw

If we donāt microdose delusion we wonāt make it through this reality babeā¦.
So I remember reading about this study in grad school where they have a bunch of clinically depressed people and a bunch of non-clinically-depressed people a game that was partially chance and partially skill, and asked them to estimate how much control they had over the outcome.
The depressed people were far more accurate in estimating how much influence their actions had on the outcome of the game compared to their nondepressed counterparts, who consistently overestimated the effects of their own choices on their chances of winning.
Then I remember this other study (CW animal testing) where they put rats in a bucket of water that they couldnāt get out of, so theyād have to swim. There was a fairly consistent point at which the swimming rat would falter, and stop swimming, fated to drown.
Except that thatās when the researchers would pull the rat out of the bucket, give it a nice rest warmth and a meal.
When those SAME rats who had been rescued before were put in the same situation again, they swam much LONGER than they had before.
Why? The risk was the same either way- drowning. Youād have thought that the fear of drowning would keep them swimming to their maximum length no matter what.
The researchers conclusion was that the rescued rats had something they hadnāt had the first time- they had more hope. A miraculous rescue could come, and that let them swim for longer, just in case.
I think we do microdose delusion because sometimes that little overestimation of our chances, of our luck, keeps us swimming that little bit longer, just in case something good happens. And sometimes, that little margin really does make the difference.Ā
āAll right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."
REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.
"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Littleā"
YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.
"So we can believe the big ones?"
YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.
"They're not the same at all!"
YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YETāDeath waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.
"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the pointā"
MY POINT EXACTLY.ā
-Terry Pratchett, Hogfather.
hey, don't just leave the quote there! the last line is what MAKES it!
"YOU NEED TO BELIEVE IN THINGS THAT ARENāT TRUE. Ā HOW ELSE CAN THEY BECOME?"
Wishing you all a get more hairy and naked summer <3
