Little easter egg about Big Jack Horner
[So, as of this newest chapter of my fic, some may have caught a few interesting details. This post is specifically about the family crest Jack's father received as a gift. It's based on the REAL Horner family coat of arms. (mind the watermark)]
[Other than this being significant to my fic, it does tie into something deeper that I also mentioned with this banner being explained. See, it has been kinda made clear in the movie that Jack was from Far Far Away before ending up in Spain (Pinocchio is in Far Far Away and doesn't leave that location), so Jack had to have moved from what is Shrek's version of England. And we can actually use this coat of arms to link Jack to a noble bloodline.]
Early Origins of the Horner family
The surname Horner was first found in Somerset where they held a family seat from very early times, some say long before the Norman Conquest in 1066. However, we must look to Huntingdonshire (now part of Cambridgeshire) for the first listing of the family. For it is there, that Matilda le Homere, was listed in the Hundredorum Rolls of 1273. A few years later in 1303, Richard le Homer was listed in the Writs of Parliament.
Later again in 1379, The Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls listed Johannes Homer and Ricardus Hornar.
One source notes: "Horner is a characteristic Yorkshire name. The Horners, a family of York merchants in the 17th century, on three occasions held the office of lord mayor of that city."
Mention should now be made of Jack Horner of the nursery rhyme fame. Some people claim that he was a historical figure, the steward of Richard Whiting (1461-1539), the last abbot of Glastonbury. As the story goes, during Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries, the abbot is said to have sent his steward to the king with a gift - a pie containing the deeds of some manor houses, one of which Horner extracted. While this story cannot be fully confirmed, it is true that a Thomas Horner did take over the manor of Mells after the dissolution and his family have lived there since.
[Now, note it mentions the Norman Conquest in 1066. This is important for not only being something that happened in our real world history, but...IT WAS SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED IN THE SHREK UNIVERSE!]
[This is the Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered cloth nearly 70 metres (230 feet) long and 50 centimetres (20 inches) tall that depicts the events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, led by William, Duke of Normandy challenging Harold II, King of England, and culminating in the Battle of Hastings.
It is seen in Worcestershire Academy in Shrek the Third.
Meaning Big Jack Horner, the poor pie boy who grew into the spoiled entitled man-child who needed more, at one point was of a noble house, till something happened to force his line into poverty.]
{My headcanon is what I've written in my fic. The events of the rumored deed theft by Thomas Horner sullied the house's reputation to the point that the family split, with some staying in positions earned but couldn't keep, and some departing to start anew. Jack's line being of those that tried to do better away from their name's tarnishing. Maybe it wasn't all on Jack's performances that didn't gain the favor of the crowds, but possibly the name Horner itself that held them back in their homeland. The people could've been biased to the rumor of the name being tied to dirty and wrongful misdeeds, thus no one would buy their pies. So they would have to move out of their homeland to somewhere where the name Horner wasn't known. Hence, Jack ended up in Spain and went from barely scraping by to, as he says "You Know, I Never Had Much as a Kid. Just Loving Parents, Stability, and a Mansion... And a Thriving Baked Goods Enterprise for Me to Inherit." He's not lying. He had nothing as a kid, but once in a land that didn't know the name Horner, his family did as they always had...They strived against adversity...Nitor in adversum.}
<This is how you know I love a character. When I not only make a fic that's in total 236,090 words long, but I'm crafting lore so deep it can nearly be canon.>
