hi c! hope you're doing good!
needed some insights from you regarding PhD funding. So far I've received 2 acceptances, and I'm really excited, I'm filling in my funding applications now, and my statements feel 70-75% ready. I wanted to ask someone who's been through the process. What do you think makes a good funding statement, what should one focus on the most, any tips you can provide will be helpful, thanks! love love
Hi! Congratulations on the acceptances, that is great news!!
It depends on what kind of funding programme you're applying for. More or less, you'd need to highlight why your project is important, and why you're the best person to do the research you're proposing. I don't know what field you're in, but it's a good idea to think and write about the larger social and political stakes of your research. Tell them a good story about what you'd like to do with this research, how you think it fits into your long-term goals/what you see yourself doing, and how the funding would help. And I know this sounds mercenary, but what's in it for the funder: like, think about how your research might contribute to the goals of that scholarship or studentship or whatever, or what specifically you being there brings to the table.
I hope that helps! And the best of luck to you <3
It doesn’t matter how slow you go, as long as you keep moving.

hi, i made a database on notion of a bunch of resources, online archives, journals and so on i frequently use for research!!
not all of these are open access/free, and some might be through a library membership (but most are open access) but the idea of this was more to get the names and links of resources in one place so things don't slip through the cracks
it's a work in progress and i'll keep adding more as i find them/think of them but in the meantime here we are

Have you moved to the UK? Not being intrusive, so kindly ignore if you don't wish to answer, but what was the procedure to apply? And is the PhD self-funded or did you get a scholarship?
Hi, yes I have! It’s a funded position — I don’t think it makes any sense to do a self-funded PhD at all. When I first wrote to my now-supervisor last year about working with him, they happened to be hiring a researcher for a project that was very much up my alley. I applied, got interviewed, and here I am.
If you’re looking for funded positions, professors you write to are a good place to start asking. University websites will also tell you about funding options. Or you can directly check with research councils, like with the UKRI, which is what’s funding me.

No you don’t understand. This is the actual graphical abstract for an actual paper published in the journal Cell, one of the top three journals for all life science (at the same level as Nature and Science). Incredible.
I also love that the groups of ants are just called 'big', 'medium', 'small' and 'smallest'.
5 Secrets to Playing the Blues on the Piano
The blues is a genre of music that has a rich history and a distinctive sound. Playing the blues on the piano can be both challenging and rewarding. If you're interested in learning how to play the blues on the piano, we've got five secrets to help you get started.
Master the Blues Scale: The foundation of playing the blues on the piano is the blues scale. This scale consists of six notes: C, E♭, F, F♯, G, and B♭. Practicing this scale is essential to get that bluesy sound. Try playing it up and down the keyboard to become familiar with its unique intervals.
Learn the 12-Bar Blues Progression: The 12-bar blues progression is the backbone of most blues songs. It consists of three chords - the I, IV, and V chords (e.g., C7, F7, G7 in the key of C). These chords follow a specific pattern: four bars of the I chord, two bars of the IV chord, two more bars of the I chord, one bar of the V chord, one bar of the IV chord, and finally two more bars of the I chord. Understanding and practicing this progression is crucial for playing the blues.
Add Bluesy Phrasing and Expressiveness: The blues is all about emotion and expression. Use techniques like slides, bends, and trills to give your piano playing a bluesy feel. Experiment with dynamics, playing some notes louder and others softer, to convey the right mood. Listen to blues legends like B.B. King and Ray Charles to understand how they infuse their music with emotion.
Explore Left-Hand Boogie-Woogie Patterns: To add a rhythmic groove to your blues piano playing, learn some left-hand boogie-woogie patterns. These repetitive bass patterns can give your blues a lively and danceable quality. Practice alternating between the root and fifth notes of each chord in the 12-bar progression to create a boogie-woogie feel.
Improvise with Confidence: One of the most exciting aspects of playing the blues on the piano is improvisation. Start by playing around with the blues scale and the 12-bar progression. Experiment with different rhythms and melodic ideas. As you gain confidence, you can incorporate more advanced techniques like bluesy licks and runs. Don't be afraid to make mistakes; improvisation is all about finding your own unique voice in the music.
In conclusion, playing the blues on the piano is a journey that requires practice, dedication, and a deep understanding of the genre. Mastering the blues scale, learning the 12-bar progression, adding expressiveness, exploring left-hand patterns, and improvising with confidence are five secrets to help you excel in playing the blues. So, grab your piano and start discovering the soulful and timeless world of blues music today.
