veterinary medicine but specifically the part where you spend all day trying to be rational and precise and then one cat presses its head into your hand and suddenly you remember you are made of something softer than protocol

Chaotic STEM Academia
chaotic stem academia is beautiful in a way that feels slightly self-destructive.
in notebooks full of equations written too fast, crossed out, and rewritten, solved again an hour later because suddenly they stopped making sense. in staying up too late with a desk lamp on, telling yourself one more page, one more paper, one more explanation before sleep.
in annotated printouts, in highlighted consensus statements, chargers that barely work, coffee gone cold beside a stack of books and articles, and a pen you keep picking up even though it ran out of ink yesterday, in twenty tabs open at once. in reading three explanations of the same concept and somehow feeling both smarter and more lost.
in the quiet violence of wanting to understand everything, all at once. in library silence and hospital corridors, cold mornings that begin before the sun does. in the sounds of machines, infusion pumps, in the feeling of being too tired to think and too stubborn to stop.
in the mess of learning, in understanding something only after fighting with it. in the specific kind of exhaustion that comes from staring at numbers, scans, graphs, and handwritten notes until they all start to blur into one long thread of understanding.
in the ache of carrying too many thoughts, too many questions. in learning something first with confusion, then with frustration, then with awe.
in the glow of a laptop in a room that should have gone dark hours ago. in the particular loneliness of late-night studying.
in classical music playing too softly from a speaker that crackles. in wrinkled scrubs, messy hair, ink-stained hands, and the feeling of being a little haunted by everyone you are trying to save - and everyone you didn´t. in the strange intimacy of trying to map out exactly how and why a body is failing while your own body is running on willpower and caffeine.
in kind professors with sharp minds and tenderness that inspires curiosity and love for that specific field, subject or research. in mentors who make difficult things feel survivable. in people who scribble explanations on a page for you. in the quiet miracle of someone saying "look again, you´re closer than you think".
in realizing that intelligence is not always clean or elegant, sometimes it is obsessive and tired, a little unwell and unbearably sincere. in the panic, too, of realizing you forgot something obvious. in going back, in checking again.
in the romance of becoming the kind of person who looks at chaos and insists on meaning, who looks at suffering and insists on care, who keeps reading, keeps asking, keeps circling back even when the night is too long and the answers still refuse to come.
in realizing maybe that´s why it feels so beautiful; because it is intimate, because it costs something, because it leaves a mark.
“There’s really no shortcut to forgetting someone. You just have to endure missing them everyday until you don’t anymore.”
— Unknown
Ovid’s Metamorphoses is really good because it is a piece of literature which says okay but what if an act of violence happened to you, a violence so devastating and unsettling that it not only changes your life, but in fact removes you from the human world as you knew it? what if you were so changed by the violence you experienced that you no longer recognize yourself as a person? that you have no choice but to become something Else?
and most of the time that violence is really, deeply personal — like sure yes the violence of civil war and the political times is in there, as it is in so much Roman literature, but so much of it is about personal violence instead (or in addition). what if the thing that happened to you that fundamentally transformed you was a thing that did not transform the world around you per se, but ends up ultimately completely reshaping that world in a sort of cumulative way by the constant transformations of every “you” that the poem touches (and there are SO many of them)
and it’s extra compelling, I think, because it’s interested in asking these questions but often doesn’t linger past that moment of transformation, except in the sense that the entire world as the audience knows it is made up of things which are created as a result of those changes, like spiders and nightingales and laurel trees, and so the reckoning with those answers happens not in-text but outside of it

Poets have their desks and pockets filled with poems, artists with sketches, and mine are filled with equations, calculus and books.
After all, we, scientists and you, romantics, aren't so different.
✨Chaotic STEM Academia✨
~ Always needing to write down interesting bits of research papers or uni lesson pages but never having the patience to maintain a whole new notebook for it; consequently, you’ve got delightful facts from like four unrelated subjects scribbled in the margins of notebooks and textbooks and on post-it notes and napkins and The Cat (flipping through your notebooks and textbooks is always a wild ride)
~ Notes for a single subject are either spread out over five different notebooks and several loose sheets (Not In Binders, I repeat, Not In Binders) or you’ve got the whole year’s coursework down in one very thicc notebook, there is no in between (organisation is not your strong suit bestie, it’s okay)
~ Hyperfixating on questions and topics (you have no concept of Leave It And Move On) the ensuing chaos of research and rabbit holes and stack exchange questions and reddit threads from 10 years ago mean that you usually know way more than you need to about certain things (but knowledge is never wasted, you tell yourself, after closing your laptop at 3 am on a Tuesday morning)
~ Ink spots in places ink spots are not usually found (elbows, knees, feet) after a study session (you have no memory of how they got there and now it’s gonna take forever to scrub them out, but that is the price you pay for getting things done)
~ Forgetting to bring things to class (notebooks, stationery, devices, the works) but luckily your backpack houses a second dimension of pure chaos (the second zip) from whence you can summon a very worn-looking pencil from three years ago in a pinch (once the second dimension stationery runs out, you really need to get your shit together and pack for lessons)
~ Taking pride in your rough work- scribbled equations and calculations and sketched diagrams covering pages delight you; there’s something solid and real about them, proof that you’ve done things and learned things. You flip through your rough notebook after you’ve used up the last bit of space in it, and take heart in the fact that you’re different from the person at the beginning of the book
~ The education system fills you with despair sometimes, in all of its rigidity, in all of its focus on only a few exams. You want to learn for the sake of learning, you want to pursue every single one of your myriad interests, but eventually realise it’s not practical. Some day, you tell yourself.
