You’re thinking of the twitch q&a but that’s not what he said. He said that he wants people to come to their own conclusions and doesn’t want people to look to him for answers because he doesn’t have the answers because he doesn’t know. But he said the bad omens songs that use religion acknowledge there being a god and in an interview about their first album he said the same thing:

“I grew up in a very religious household. My grandparents were Republican and Christian; I grew up listening to [George W.] Bush keynotes and stuff. I’m not religious, but I really appreciate and enjoy [religious] imagery and concepts, and I think there are a lot of valuable stories in the bible. It’s a very unique way to capture a message by acknowledging the existence of a god or devil, even if you don’t believe in it; it’s a very good metaphor. Like in “Glass Houses,” when I say, “I’ve seen the devil more than I’ve seen God,” really I’m trying to say, “I’ve seen more evil than good.” I like to personify the devil and God and use them as a totem.”

Every time he’s ever talked about it he’s said he’s not religious so I’m confused why some people are suddenly convinced he actually is religious. He’s been very consistent so where is this even coming from other than you just wanting him to be religious? Because that’s what it sounds like and at a certain point it just seems disrespectful to insist someone has certain religious beliefs different to the ones they’ve stated. Like if I randomly started insisting you must actually be Mormon no matter what you say that would be very weird of me and disrespectful.

He has mentioned that his grandparents were Baptist, so I don't think Catholic school would make sense.

I personally think he definitely believes in god, but I can see him not making god or religion his whole personality in his life. I know he loves religious symbolism and finds the beauty and respect in it. I’m the same way, I grew up in the church like he did but I don’t label myself with any religions and I don’t make religion my whole entire life. I love the beauty, symbolism, and stories religion gives us. It’s quite fascinating.

I can't remember which interview or stream it was but he talked about believing but not being devout and not being the type to push his beliefs, and having friends all over the belief spectrum. It was the one where he talked about how he used to work cleaning the local Church or something similar. He may or may not have gone to Catholic school too from how he described what communion was to Jesse in a stream once
