[intro post]

i am io! my main activity is dedicated to political anthropology and semiotics of power - simply put, how tradition, ritual and symbolism are reintroduced and enabled in contemporary state affairs.

and as for something less boring, i love dabbling in arts/crafts/arts & crafts projects of all sorts - from performing in a traditional court orchestra to making custom jewelery - and cherish the philosophy that art is about people and connections first, not perfection and ideals.

i am a native Russian speaker who is also fluent in English and kinda decent in German and Bahasa Indonesia (always eager to practise).

i find it interesting how various theatrical traditions feature the archetype of the divine clown. comedic figures who may not be divine in the sense that they are venerated but in the sense that they're omnipresent, omniscient, transcend the boundaries of the stage. practically divine in the world they inhabit. and on paper, their status as servants, labourers, etc. seems at odds with this divine element, but it really contributes to it- they have to be everywhere whether they're needed or not, and are often a conduit to the audience due to their status and assigned position in the on-stage world.

recently i've been watching javan wayang kulit and paying special attention to the punakawan, though i may not understand their dialogue beyond the few cognates with words used in thai ( i really need to learn basa jawa, though ). i've also been looking at early operas that feature commedia characters- whose dialogue i don't entirely understand either, on account of how some use the dialect of whichever region they've been drawn from. but i have enough contextual knowledge, i think, to see these characters in each other. and i just think that's really cool.

i've also been thinking of how this blog's namesake character has been portrayed as such a figure ( the main example that comes to mind at the moment is literal angel unulfo at garsington- more divine than clown, but still ) and so... y'know.

like, not in a 'this semiotic interpretation was first used a bazillion years ago at a royal wedding and established an ongoing canon' way but in a 'wow cool character design wow wow they look so epic wow an action scene wow a romance scene!!!' way instead

i mean both are valid ways to explore it since the lore is genuinely endless, but still, i wish i had like-minded friends without all of them being like 60 yr old professors ;-;

the second acrylics on paper i did this year is of ENA from ENA Dream BBQ hanging out with a figure from a different art history era - a peasant woman seen with a rake on a Malevich's 1931 painting.

here she is off work (hence no rake) and has an overlay eye to admire the crystal landscapes.

i have been a fan since the very beginning of Joel G's web series and was overly excited to try this new ENA game out: it makes perfect use of both avantgarde and folklore elements, both being my favourite research topics. and as the main character's design is based off of a cubist painting, why not do an unexpected crossover episode?

long story short, loplop (the bird guy) is a chaos god who visited the XX century artist Max Ernst in his dreams, and was the inspiration for some of his own works. how much more dadaist can you get with this?

Droodles by Roger Price (from his 1953 book). Droodles (a blend of “doodle”, “drawing”, “riddle”) are simple drawings with a witty, often absurd, caption. The first one, as some of you may know, was used by Frank Zappa for his 1982 album, Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch. (Zappa, a fan of Price's work, lived just a few miles from the artist and personally sought permission to use the image.)

These come from the 1972 edition of the book.

part of the problem with amatonormativity is that if you aren't interested in a long-term monogamous relationship people assume you will be a miserable empty incomplete shell of a person so you have to insist on your ability to be genuinely fulfilled by things other than marriage/monogamy/romance/etc. but at the same time society is shaped in a way where not being interested in those things can easily make you alienated, between marriage and reproduction being depicted as natural life stages that everyone needs to go through to be a fulfilled adult and it being considered standard to prioritize your romantic relationships over your platonic ones. and if you ever express loneliness or anxiety or guilt over this experience then people take that as proof that you just need to Find The One to make you realize that all your feelings and desires were actually just immaturity/fear of commitment/trauma this whole time and the societal norm IS the only way for you to be truly happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Given that I like a lot of physical affection and do things with my friends that’d be considered as “romantic” to outsiders something I’ve really had to reconcile with is the notion of things being “inherently romantic”. There is no action that on its own is always romantic. Society can place romantic meanings on gestures and individuals can develop romantic associations with certain gestures but neither of those make something "inherently romantic".

For a long time I restrained myself from holding hands with my friends or laying in their lap because I thought they were too romantic for our relationship. Even though physical affection is the strongest way I show I care, I purposely withheld that and withdrew from my friends because I was worried about being read as romantic when they knew I wasn't.

And that sucks.

It wasn't until one of my friends sat me down and had to interrogate me and reassure that they were okay with me doing "traditionally romantic" things with them. That was one of the most freeing experiences conversations I'd had. It's odd to put into words just how much it meant for me to be told that I didn't have to self-restrain myself because of what others think about our relationship. We know its not romantic --who cares what others think???
