Il nocchier, che si figura
Ogni scoglio, ogni tempesta
Non si lagni se poi resta
Un mendico pescator.
Darsi in braccio ancor conviene
Qualche volta alla fortuna;
che sovente in ciò ch’avviene
la fortuna ha parte ancor.
Words of psychological wisdom from a professional conspirator.
Actually Gluck's version slaps too.
I am warming to Massimo a bit. Not that I have forgiven him for how he talks to his daughter, but at least he has the decency to conspire in the cast where no one else does.
every time i think i'm losing the plot with my rodelinda analyses/interpretations, i remember that flavio bertarido exists and is utterly wonderful in its absurdity.
ooogh... orfeo ed euridice in bangkok around the time i'm supposed to go there. cast is all thai singers whose names i don't recognise, but that's a promising sign to me.
potential downsides: the venue is one of those schmancy private schools ( apparently a sponsor of the bangkok opera, but still ) and i don't know the ticket prices.
ticket obtained. expect thoughts on it sometime after the 28th. ya-hoo.
i still wonder what exactly he means by this.

bajazet, the thunderbolt.
finally drew this guy! i was mainly struggling with the helmet. obligatory celestial motifs to tie with his epithet and his daughter. i like him a lot.
plus: my sister left some clay lying around and so i pinched it to make a tiny baz for my desk. he's kind of messy, but i made him and he's in three dimensions and that's what matters.

being a castrato known as il succianoccioli is insane.
going back to the snake aria, because i find i can articulate my thoughts about it better now- i like how it makes rodelinda give off a different impression than she does in the aria that we ended up getting. a bit more cheeky, a bit less heroic. "by the way, watch out for the snakes!" it reminds me of pertharite, where everyone's a smarmy asshole to varying degrees.
Found family but it is some guy from Benevento who cannot seem to fuck off from Lombardian ruling family. He lives there now.

it's baffling how there seems to be no project/ensemble dedicated to performing all of alessandro scarlatti's works, Ã la the english concert's handel for all or whatever la nuova musica's got going on with purcell. i don't know. maybe it's just because i'm perpetually salty about how it seems that all the scarlatti they ever stage is just griselda, griselda, griselda. but surely there has to be something out there.
always gets me how eduige's historical counterpart was recorded without a name, known only as a daughter, a wife, a relation of somebody else, but from that corneille and the librettists who came after him were able to create a character with such depth and humanity.
thinking... about how the setting of the swallow aria in handel was re-purposed from a snake aria sung by rodelinda. i will have to go find the original context for it, but this is not the first time i have seen grimoaldo being terrorised by someone with snake symbolism. i doubt he is escaping anytime soon.
went back to check the autograph ms that contains it. "ben spesso in vago prato" comes... either after or in the position of "spietati io vi giurai," which does not appear in the ms. i say either/or because part of me doubts that handel would've given cuzzoni two arias back-to-back like that.
either way. the sheer aura of That happening and then this woman hitting them with an aria where she compares herself to a snake hidden in the grass and whatever.

i get genuinely sad thinking about how nobody in the 18th century got to hear monteverdi. imagine dying of dropsy or some shit without ever having the chance to hear l'orfeo..

has anyone ever considered that there may be a correlation between husbands lost at sea and aquatic tenors?
"Sú la sponda del pigro Lete" from Händel's Tamerlano, sung by Thomas Randle. This is what I mean when I ask for more girl dads in opera
"Should you arrive to the banks of the river Lethe before I do, wait for me. Once vengeance has been done, I promise to faithfully follow you."
