sokka is needy and its sweet!
uhm... i think i blacked out while drawing. its not the same but similar to @allgremlinart sokka design there. my apologies!
A compilation of stuff I know about drawing Asian faces and Asian culture! I feel like manyĀ āHow-To-Drawā tutorials often default to European faces and are not really helpful when drawing people of other races. So I thought Iād put this together in case anyone is interested! Feel free to share this guide and shoot me questions if you have any! Iām by no means an expert, I just know a few things from drawing experience and from my own cultural background.Ā
InuYasha & The Final Act - Magazine Scans
This narrative that Inuyasha and Kagome are too stupid and disconnected from each other to fully know and embrace that the other loves them and they want a future together despite the complications in the canon timeline really tires me out. It's all rooted in the very western perspective that you have to say "I love you" to mean it and have a "valid" relationship. They were dating practically the whole manga, for god's sake! Kagome didn't pull that "boyfriend" title out of nowhere! Inuyasha offered it to her!
(This is from chapter 72, vol 8, right after Kagome came back during the wolf monster fight and Naraku's first reveal. Yes, they've been dating since then.) I've said it before but by Japanese standards of communication, this scene is VERY explicitly him asking for them to be "together" together, which is why he mentions moving past Kikyou even if he won't forget her. And by the same logic, this...
(From chapter 494, vol 50, y'all know the scene) ... is a very clear marriage proposal. He's saying if she wants him forever, he'll protect her forever, too. He's pledging himself to her for longer than just the Naraku journey. I know it's not a very "western" way to propose but I've still been surprised how many people can't read between the lines of either scene. So like... this is my plea to let them love each other, in conversations, fics, whathaveyou. Because they really really do, and both have always been on board for it.

"He's gonna come back. He has to."
When it comes to the discourse about Katara's feelings in regards to being in a relationship with Aang, I feel like this moment from the finale often gets overlooked despite it being incredibly important. I believe this is for two reasons: 1 - The moment itself is relatively short. 2 - The moment in question occurs in the first scene of episode 3x20, the one where all of the characters begin their final push against the Fire Nation; therefore, it feels like what happens here is often forgotten about in comparison to everything else that happens afterwards. Regardless of this, I love how Katara responds to Zuko's worried feelings about Aang losing by responding with: "Aang won't lose. He's gonna come back. He has to." I totally understand and (partially) agree with people who wanted to see a conversation between Aang and Katara addressing what happened at the Ember Island Play in a separate scene before the final kiss at the end of the series. That is a completely valid thing to want. That being said, I think that what we did end up getting still works in that Katara's feelings about Aang are made clear to the audience without her having to explicitly say that she loves him. Some parts of the fandom will try and say that Katara was confused about the prospect of being with Aang because of her not knowing if she loved him in a romantic way; however, I feel that this moment at the beginning of the penultimate episode of the series pretty clearly shows that this wasn't what she was confused about. She was confused on if being with Aang before the war was over was the right choice given that one or both of them could be killed in the ensuing fight. Katara and Aang are the heart and soul of the show so it makes sense why the story ends with them beginning their romantic relationship, but I think from a broader perspective, it also helps convey the idea to the audience that these characters, among all of the others as well, can finally rest, recoup, and love each other to the fullest extent without the fear of the Fire Nation taking that away from them. Katara grew to love and believe in Aang, and I think this moment exemplifies that so well that I wanted to give it some recognition.
This is a great take on this scene, though I don't think there's any serious debate about how Katara feels about Aang during EIP either. She pretty clearly states that the timing is bad because they have a war to finish first. Both of them have very consistent takes on their characters and it comes to a head at this point, not because there's any confusion about their mutual feelings for each other, but because they deal with the pressure of the impending battle differently. He wants everything out on the table, just in case, like what happened on the Day of Black Sun. She wants to make sure neither of them are distracted and fail to win the war, after she's watched him die before and watched all the men of her tribe be captured when they failed before. They have completely understandable, easily traceable differences in how they handle the situation.
Once the specific obstacle she mentioned as being what was preventing her from wanting to start the relationship, she's the one who comes out and initiates it with him. She was ready for that all along, but just wanted the war complete first. As noted above, it's really symbolic of hope for the post-war world that these two teenagers can then establish what they've been wanting all along - some sort of normalcy and the relationship they've both desired for much of the series.
Agreed, I also think people twist Kataraās words or misunderstand the discussion at hand in the Ember Island Players.
Katara makes it very clear that she does not view Aang platonically in that scene. Aang tries to give her a way out, asking what she feels for him, as theyāve already kissed multiple times and have been dancing around a romance the entire show. Karat then denies viewing him platonically and states that it is not the right time for them to be together.
Aang then asks when the right time is. Katara responds: āI donāt know. Right now, I think Iām just a little confused.ā
Her confusion has nothing to do with whether she has feelings for Aang. It has everything to do with the timing of when they can have a relationship, if ever. Part of the miscommunication and angst of the scene is over the fact that they both clearly want to be together and feel like they canāt ever be.
This is also why Aang kisses Katara. Itās literally the eve of what they think is going to be the end of the world. Itās also the eve of the 100th anniversary of Aangās peopleās genocide. Aang feels like he has failed to show up the entire story. It plays into how he tries to show Katara love. Part of showing up in this moment for him is making it clear he loves her, and he doesnāt know how else to convey it than this.
Similarly, Kataraās behavior is a result of what she has already been through with Aangāthat she has literally watched him die and held his corpse in her arms, and the only reason he was revived was because of the water from the oasis, of which she has none left now. If Aang dies in his fight with Ozai, there is no do-over. She knows it, and he knows it. Thatās why she pulls away, why she is upset, and why she runs off after the fact. She canāt let a relationship progress any more than it already has because if she loses Aang again for real this time, she wonāt be able to handle it. The month or so that Aang was comatose was canonically the darkest point of Kataraās life. I mean, she was literally nursing him to health the entire time waiting for him to wake up and not knowing if he ever would.
So her saying that Aang is going to come back, that he has to come back, is so clear in conveying what Aang means to her. And Katara having that faith in Aang makes complete sense, because he always has come back to and for her the entire series. He even defied death for her.
