This was so ridiculously drawn out and the conclusion was so obvious yet still I couldn’t tell where this was going

It occurs to me that in a Dungeons & Dragons-style fantasy setting, “magical experimentation” is probably a naturalist’s answer to anthropology’s “ritual purposes”. Do we know for a fact that this beastie is the result of an experiment by an evil wizard? No, we do not – but we have no idea what its ecological niche actually is, and it keeps eating everybody who tries to find out, so we’re going with “a wizard did it”.

The explanation given by the text notwithstanding, real difference between the “Beast” and “Monstrosity” creature types in Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition is that the former is “animals the game’s designers want druids to turn into”, and the latter is “animals the game’s designers don’t want druids to turn into”. That owlbears are classified as Monstrosities and not Beasts illustrates the fundamental flaw of this paradigm.
