At some point, Canadian fans are allowed to be sick of this routine.
A Canadian team drafts a guy, hands him the keys to the franchise, builds the roster around him, gives him the captaincy, bends over backward to keep him happy, pays him an absurd amount of money, and treats him like the centre of the hockey universe. Then, after years of being marketed as the heart-and-soul leader, suddenly the market is too loud, the taxes are too high, the fans care too much, the media asks too many questions, and everyone is supposed to feel bad for the poor millionaire who has to play hockey in a city that actually gives a damn.
It is pathetic.
These players want the worship, the captaincy, the commercials, the contract, the organizational control, and the hero treatment, but the second that loyalty comes with pressure, scrutiny, or accountability, they start looking for the nearest soft landing in a sunbelt market where nobody will bother them after a three-game losing streak. Canadian teams are expected to develop them, promote them, protect them, and make them rich, only for the same players to turn around and act like the fanbase is some unbearable burden because people expect their franchise player to actually act like a franchise player.
it feels like the league is drifting into this ugly pattern where captains and cornerstone stars treat long-suffering markets like temporary inconvenience stops on the way to somewhere easier. Fine. Players have rights. They can chase comfort, weather, taxes, family, privacy, whatever they want.
But Spare everyone the Martyr act.
If you take the money, wear the letter, and let an organization build itself around you, then do not act victimized when people expect loyalty, leadership, and results.
That is the job. That is what the money is for. If you want all the benefits of being a superstar without any of the pressure, then just say that. But do not blame the fans for caring too much when their only crime was believing you were actually committed to the team you were more than happy to let build everything around you.
Pressure is not oppression. Media attention is not persecution. Fans caring is not a personal attack. That is the cost of being the guy. And if that is too much, then maybe you never wanted to be the guy in the first place.
when you start reading again and it's like oh. oh . the sun actually does still shine.
fuuuuck i forgot to give a shit about stupid bullshit that doesnt matter 🤦♀️
pick up that non-fiction book
not all of us can live in fantasy 100% the time like i see some people on here do and it's refreshing to learn something new. its been philosophy, essays, and history for me and i feel much more at home on planet Earth for it knowing that people have been struggling and wishing similarly for millenia.
its not that fiction doesnt have its place, its important and healthy to exercise the imagination, but non-fiction can do so much to boost and supplement that. if not for yourself, for your art or for the people you're around
"representation matters!" but you wont read or engage with non-fiction works about any demographic outside your own
this version of the post doesnt seem to be getting much traction but this is arguably the most important reason why we should be reading nonfiction in addition to fiction

Interviews with hockey players are fantastic, because it is a complex game that can be spoken about at length, but during the intermission they'll find the Wettest player imaginable on the losing team and for thirty seconds they'll ask them things like "what do you need to do to get more pucks in the net?" And the player (panting, haunted behind the eyes) says something like "well, we've got to get them in there"
Poulin in charge of Abby Roque AND Emma Maltais now, godspeed
okay. breathe. listen to my voice. can you tell me five things in this room you can fuck?
okay great. now list me four things in this room you can kill.
beautiful. there you go. okay. now: tell me three things you can impose unjust taxes on.
almost done. can you list two things you could shove in a pipe and smoke?
last one: one thing you could use as a makeshift weapon?
why are you still crying
fucking impossible to get decent help around here
I wrote 2 bullet points with like 4-6 total sentences explaining to someone why using AI to make the slop they just posted was bad. Their response: "It's ironic that you used AI to write that."
I've never felt so insulted.
It’s really funny (and by funny I mean not funny) whenever a PWHL reporter is like ‘yeah! This star got their start in figure skating! They could have been a figure skater!’
When the story usually is ‘I was forced/shoved/put into figure skating and I hated it/it was okay and then I saw hockey and forced/begged my family to put me in that instead.
It’s rarely ever ‘oh yeah I love figure skating and thought it was great, but I tried hockey and fell in love!’
I get how the figure skating could be an interesting factoid on the men’s side, but on the women’s side it’s just like ‘hey you were a girl and they weren’t going to put you into hockey, so to be on the ice you got figure skating and had to figure out a way to get to hockey. Isn’t that so funny you are a girl playing hockey now instead? Weird. Anyways super cool! Did you know you could have chosen the normal girl activity instead?’
Like it’s super weird and I hate it.
Also not related, but kind of related in the sense of how words get twisted but whenever people bring up Phillips and Frankel being friends, they both always kind of awkward laugh and and smile and like ‘yeah we have a good relationship but we haven’t always been super close, love and respect her tho!’ Like I get the vibes they are coworkers who think the other is cool and have a lot of respect for each other but the framing as “close friends” is always super weird whenever it happens. But hey maybe I am reading it wrong.
