Kulindadromeus zabaikalicus, the first known fluffy ornithischian dinosaur. Only officially announced last week, this little 1.5m long (~5ft) Jurassic critter is an incredibly significant find. Until now all known examples of feathered dinosaurs have been members of the theropod branch, but Kulindadromeus is a basal neornithischian, much more closely related to hadrosaurs, ceratopsians and pachycephalosaurs.

Two other ornithischians, Tianyulong and Psittacosaurus, were previously known to have sported quill-like bristles, but this new find is the first example of actual filamentous “dinofuzz” in the group. The fossils of Kulindadromeus preserve three different types of feathery integument – hair-like filaments on the body, downy tufts on the upper limbs, and strange “ribbon-like” feathers on its shins – as well as scaly skin on the tail and lower limbs.

Check out this diagram from ResearchGate.  It deals with the color vision of horses, who are also generally dichromatic.  (I think, though I’m not sure, that zebras would have the same color vision as horses.)  See how orange and green look to them?

But either way, the main point of tiger camouflage isn’t blending in via it’s coloration, it’s actually a combination of disruptive coloration and countershading. Disruptive coloration uses boldly contrasting colors to break up the shape of an animal’s outline, as shown in this image by Hugh Cott:

It’s much harder to resolve the movement of a tiger as “TIGER!!” compared to grass or branches swaying in the wind this way.

In addition, countershading is another camouflage strategy the tiger employs. It’s darker-colored on its back and lighter-colored on its belly. This is because when light falls on objects, it illuminates their top halves, while shadow falls on and darkens the lower half. Animals with the same top and bottom colors will therefore stand out from the background, because of the shadows cast on their legs and belly. Countershading helps to ‘flatten’ the silhouette of an animal by disguising these shadows. If that confuses you, check out this figure by Ian Alexander:

Macrauchenia was a long-necked and long-limbed, three-toed South American ungulate mammal, typifying the order Litopterna. Macrauchenia had a somewhat camel-like body, with sturdy legs, a long neck and a relatively small head. Its feet, however, more closely resembled those of a modern rhinoceros, and had three hoofs each. 

One striking characteristic of Macrauchenia is that, unlike most other mammals, the openings for nostrils on its skull were atop the head, leading some early scientists to believe that, much like a whale, it used these nostrils as a form of snorkel. Soon after, this theory was rejected. An alternative theory is that the animal possessed a trunk, perhaps to keep dust out of the nostrils. Macrauchenia’s trunk may be comparable to that of the modern Saiga antelope.
