the more I think about it the more I appreciate the placement of Mary’s moving on. Nothing in the show suggests that the characters need to make a big breakthrough in order to move on, in fact, the show makes fun of that trope in series 1 with Pat. Mary got a lot of focus in the first 3 episodes and you could read that as being essential growth that she needed to go through in order to move on, or you could read it as the writers supplying that focus because she’s leaving the show.

I like the idea that being sucked off is a bit random, or happens after a certain level of development but not necessarily instantly after your climactic moment. it fits the tone of the show better and makes moving on feel the same way death does, random and sudden and shocking.

When the writers write an episode for broadcasting television they have to keep in mind the enjoyment of both people continuously watching the show and people dropping in for just one episode. Mary not moving on in s4e2 allows the focus of that episode to be on her journey as a character, and her actually moving on in the opening of s4e4 allows that episode to focus on grief and the different ways the ghosts deal with loss and finding closure.
