Oh my.
This is the part of Ghosts where Julian is trying to escape Button House through the gate for the first time and I just noticed Captain's line "we've all done it." Now, obviously this was meant to be a throwaway line that's kind of poking fun at Julian, but I feel like this unlocks a lot of potential angst surrounding the ghosts' deaths - Captain running after Havers as he leaves, Mary trying to escape the place where she died so tragically - I just think it's fun (and incredibly heart-wrenching) to imagine the Ghosts realising that they'll never be able to leave their place of death, never to see their loved ones again (although it's heavily implied that Francis Button moves into Button House with Isobel, who is just out of reach from Thomas, but we don't have time to unpack all of that).
This post has me thinking about Isabelle/Francis/Thomas now. We know that Isabelle and Francis moved out and did not live at Button House and that their son moved in.
However, I seriously doubt that the day after Thomas died, Isabelle moved out. She still lived there while Thomas was indeed beginning as a ghost. Which means wouldn’t Francis have come by the house to pick up Isabelle to go out for a date or spend time together?
And wouldn’t that mean that Thomas might wonder why his cousin is now coming over to the house as often as he is? I mean obviously for the time they were living in, Francis wouldn’t have done anything with Isabelle in front of her family because of being seen as impropriety. But, he still would have been more present as the relationship developed between Isabelle and him.
So, was ghost Thomas so obtuse that he didn’t realise something was brewing between his cousin and his love? Or did it just happen out of his view of what was going on in Higham House?
All of this just dawned on me now, years later.
