Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the lockdown is running "as smoothly as could be expected at this time". Watch her latest media conference here.
(Not really back on tumblr right now, because... brain. But I wanted to share this, because it’s... just an everyday thing, but also extraordinary. On this, day 1 of “Lockdown" for NZ) This is our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern. For her, while the circumstances are unprecedented, this is an ordinary media conference, she’s done a dozen in the last week around Covid-19, and... well... I guess I just want to say that I’m so goddamned proud of her. Of her eloquence, her honesty, her compassion, and her inner steel. She stands, in her position of power, and instead of shielding herself, or making the easy choice, she (and the government) have spread their arms, left themselves open, and extended the shield as far as they can to protect all of us. The country is quiet, it has been closed. The scale of it is a little hard to comprehend. The next month will be strange. It will be unlike anything that has gone before. And IT WILL SAVE LIVES. If we all take this seriously, the lockdown will end in a month (give or take), many more people will live, and whatever new butterfly of “normal” has developed will emerge from it’s cocoon, and we can learn what it means. But. Things WILL be different. The cost will be terrible. Many lives will be saved, yes, but not all. Every loss will be profound, and painful. But if we are kind, if we are aware, if we set our minds to protect those around us, I think the country we emerge into has the potential to be a kinder one. Our Prime Minister stands with all of us, and leads by example, and I’m so very proud. ...ooops, [/TedTalk]
